Senator Blade Morrish has introduced SB 73, which would restrict gear used during oyster harvesting in Calcasieu Lake (Big Lake) to tonging only. Sen. Morrish’s bill is in response to recent studies that have shown the oyster resource in Big Lake to be in significant decline. In 2010, the number of market-sized oysters in Big Lake decreased by 49% when compared to 2009. The number of total oysters decreased by 33% during the same period. Oyster abundance in the lake is 17% below the 10-year average.

In 2010, oystering in Area 29 (east of the ship channel) was closed by LDWF weeks early due to “significant reductions” in oyster abundance. According to LDWF records, the number of licensed oyster boats working Big Lake has nearly quadrupled in the past six years. Concern over this issue has been expressed by biologists, recreational anglers, and oyster harvesters themselves.

CCA Louisiana is interested in member input on this issue. There is some concern that deterioration of productive oyster beds makes those areas less attractive to the types of finfish commonly sought after by recreational anglers.

Please take a moment to answer the survey below. Thank you.

Everyone please try and take a few minutes and respond. I understand this went out to everyone in CCA / LA so those of us that fish Big Lake really need to have a strong response.

There have been 300 surveys sent in since Tuesday. I guess this issue is not as important to the rank and file fishermen as first thought. If you have an opinion on the dredging issue or know someone who does, get off your a$$ and send in the survey! This our chance to put our money where our mouths are.

CCA Lake Charles chapter has 3000-3500 members, so by those numbers the surveys should be rollin in. Sen Morrish is carrying our water for us on this issue because of his concern for our resources,it is out duty to make sure he is not standing alone on the battle field.

Raymond, you think maybe the survey company that CCA hired to do the mass email is working for the other side? ;-) Spammers sure don't have this much trouble getting emails to me.

OK guys, here is the skinny; emails will only be sent to CCA members that have their address in the system. I know some of you have not recieved the email and probably will not due to reasons that I am not smart enough to understand. CCA will not have an open site to take the survey since it would open the door to monkey business from spammers and skew the numbers. I apologize for the problems but they are being addressed, just don't know when we will have a solution.

No need to apologize, CCA is doing the right thing by taking an intrest in this. I believe we the people of this site including yourself to thank for that. Good job....
