Youth guns

Looking for a rifle for my son been looking at 243 and 7mm-08. Open to any caliber. What's yalls suggestion please give me reasons as in knockdown power or distance less kick. He's only 6 but my wife will use it till he can handle it good

I have a rem .308 model 7. My dad gave it to me when I was around 11 or 12. I still use it and l love it. Its small and a perfect little tree stand rifle for when he gets older.

somewhere close to this if I remember right
.243 with a 100gr is around 12 ft lbs of recoil
7mm-08 with 140gr 13 ft lbs of recoil
.308 with 150gr is 15 lbs.
30/06 & .270 is 18-20 ft lbs recoil.

I've been shooting a 7mm-08 since '91, Both my boys & wife shoot it. We own 5 of them. At 6 years old all the above will thump him unless he's 110lb 6 year old. I trained labs for blood trailing for a loooong time & have been on a many of blood trail. You could'nt take a .243 melt it down & pour it on me! Kids don't always make good shot's on deer & a .243 is a little light if the shot is bad placement. That's my opinion with a little trailing experience backing that up. Also believe a .308 is little much on the backend for smaller children & women who haven't shot much. Take a close look at the 7mm-08, now with that said different makes & models in the 708 are going to kick more than others. That's with any guns.

708 has more thump on the target end than a .243 & only a couple tenths of an inch difference at 300 yards.
.308 diehard shooters don't like this or won't agree with it but if you check out the ballistics it has better ballistics than the .308 & is right on the heels of the .270 without the recoil.

This is the best rifle I've found as for as recoil in the 7mm-08, it's the Ruger M77 compact. It can be shot by youth to grown ups anyone 6' & under. Light & easy to handle. The barrel is 16 1/2" long! It's like a toy! but very easy on the shoulder, some don't like the short barrel but you'll never see the difference out to 300yds. It runs around the $700+ but......why spend $200-$300 on a youth single shot that kicks & is only gonna be used a couple years then have to spend $500-$1000 on another rifle when this can be used for a lifetime???? When one of the boys aren't there or don't go I'm packing one of theirs:rolleyes: my oldest is 19 now he got his rifle when he was 11, still packing it & still hammering them with it. He wouldn't trade that gun for all the money in the world.

I have a Remington pump in the 7mm-08 bought in '91
Wife has a Browning BLR Lite in the 7mm-08
Boys have the Ruger compacts in the 7mm-08
& we have a Browning A-Bolt micro hunter in the 7mm-08

Academy usually has the ammo & I usually buy several boxes since all of us shoot the same.

The Ruger compacts are ALL our favorites! It's dang near a fist fight wanting to take them to the woods!

Call around & find one then go put your hands on one & you'll be amazed.
Plus they have the Ruger 3 stage safety that can be bolted or unloaded with the safety on! Alot of bolts out there you have to put on fire to bolt or unload:shaking: I don't like that.

If you look at these guns & handle them, they look similar & handle alot like the 10/22's.

I'll have to check em out, have a feeling I may have to take up deer hunting before long since it looks like I may be losing a duck lease. Maybe with one of these I can get my wife involved. She doesn't like the wakeing up early about duck hunting but loves to shoot skeet. Afternoon deer hunts would be ideal if she could stay awake.:shaking:

Get a bull barrel 22-250. Shot once since I was six. When I was young but a many behind the front shoulder that didn't take another step. Great caliber. I still shoot a sako 22-250 today. 55 grain bthp around 3700fps and super flat. Goodluck

That Ruger 7mm08 is a fine lookin gun, I have never shot one but help one the a cousin owns and it feels good when you throw it up to shoot

What ever you do bring your son with you and both of you shoulder each gun. Guns are like bows where one will fit better than the other. You can also add a limbsaver slip on recoil pad $35 which greatly reduces recoil and will help your son not develop a flinch. Also I would recommend a Burris Fullfield II scope. $200 and more than enough scope for Louisiana hunting. Good luck to you whatever route you take.

I have shot a 30-30 since I was pretty small, something else to think about is if you buy something with a wooden stock you can get a full size gun and cut some off the butt end to make it fit him now and then later reattach the piece or change stock to fit him later

I've been shooting a 243 for about 13 yrs and love it. It's light and compact. The only down fall is it is not by any means a gun to be used in heavy brush. So if you're planning on hunting thick woods it's definitely not the gun of choice.

If u are worried about recoil, whatever u get just put a muzzle break on it. $200 My nephew is 10 years old and I let him shoot my 300 WSM with a boss on it. He has killed 3-4 deer with it. And he is a skinny kid. Now he is trying to tell me I need to get a new gun so he can have mine. Will be a good bit louder but will reduce recoil drastically.

My neighbor bought one for his 12 year old daughter two years ago. She has killed 4 deer with it. He just bought another for his 12 year old son last month.

I too love those Ruger compacts. I have one in 7.62x39.

that's a suggestion I was gonna make for original post, I have never shot them but my granpa was letting my little cousin shoot his 30-06 with the managed recoil before she reached 10yrs old and that's what she hunts with now that she's in her 20's

Try looking into the new Remingotn "Managed Recoil" loads. They are said to work well. They come in a variety of calibers.

I have been shooting a .243 for ~ 25 years using 100 gr Cork-lock. With a good shot, the deer will drop or maybe run 30 yards.

Another reason to buy a 7mm 08 is that you can buy "manage recoil" bullets. I don't remember the exact ballistics but I think the manage recoil loads shoot about the same as a .243 cal.
