Just recently purchased a 300 WSM. Anyone have ideas on a scope that can handle recoil. And also if a 4.5 x 14 50 mm is too much for deer hunting.

Leupold is my favorite. And no that's a good range for deer.

That scope would be good for 300+ yard type shots.

If you will mostly be taking shots under 200 yards.....something like a 3x9x50 would be good. Nikon makes some very good scopes.

Scopes are only as good as the mounts! Any decent quality scope will handle 300wsm recoil, just make sure you have good quality rings & bases. 300wsm isn't that terrible on recoil.

x2 Leupold mounts are your best bet. I have a Browning A Bolt 300WSM and I have a Zeiss Conquest 4-12x50. Got it for $500.

I'll put any scope on my rifles, as long as it is a Leupold. I've had a 4.5 x 14 50mm on one of my deer rifles since 1997 and it has never let me down. 4.5 is fine for stuff inside of 100 yards, and you can turn it up to 14 for longer range deer and the occasional varmint.

I agree with the other folks who recommend going with Leupold mounts. Once in a while I'll go with another top end brand, but steel and quality are the order for heavy recoil. I think when I haven't used Leupold, I've put the three ring steel mounting rig on Encores and Contenders. I've also been known to put four steel rings on slug guns and heavy recoiling muzzleloaders. But two good steel Leupold rings is plenty for a .300 magnum.
