I'm always 100% behind them. We have a program over here called "Fishing for Heros." I took a soldier and his dad fishing last Friday before he gets deployed to Iraq.

I will never forget!

That to me is the best thing anybody can do is just spend time with... I was in Iraq March 2,2003 to January 18, 2004.... upon leaving the Marine Corp. I visited several families of my buddies (deceased) and one thing they always remember is the support they recieve from their friends, family, and good red-blooded americans like your-self... it is appreciated.

COME UP FROM THE FIELDS, FATHER
Walt Whitman

Come up from the fields, father, here’s a letter from our Pete,
And come to the front door, mother, here’s
a letter from thy dear son.http://pjbottoms.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/memorialday8.jpg?w=128&h=86 (http://pjbottoms.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/memorialday8.jpg)
Lo, ’tis autumn,
Lo, where the trees, deeper green, yellower and redder,
Cool and sweeten Ohio’s villages with leaves
fluttering in the moderate wind,
Where apples ripe in the orchards hang and
grapes on the trellis’d vines,
(Smell you the smell of the grapes on the vines?
Smell you the buckwheat where the bees were lately buzzing?)
Above all, lo, the sky so calm, so transparent
after the rain, and with wondrous clouds,
Below too, all calm, all vital and beautiful,http://pjbottoms.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/memorial-day4.jpg?w=128&h=89 (http://pjbottoms.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/memorial-day4.jpg)
and the farm prospers well.
Down in the fields all prospers well,
But now from the fields come, father, come
at the daughter’s call,
And come to the entry, mother, to the front door come right away.
Fast as she can she hurries, something ominous,
her steps trembling,
She does not tarry to smooth her hair nor
adjust her cap.
Open the envelope quickly,
0 this is not our son’s writing, yet his name
is sign’d,
0 a strange hand writes for our dear son,
0 stricken mother’s soul!
All swims before her eyes, flashes with black,
she catches the main words only,
Sentences broken, gunshot wound in the breast,
cavalry skirmish, taken to hospital,
At present low, but will soon be better.
Ah, now the single figure to me,
Amid all teeming and wealthy Ohio with all
its cities and farms,
Sickly white in the face and dull in the head,
very faint,
By the jamb of a door leans.
Grieve not so, dear mother (the just-grownhttp://pjbottoms.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/memorial-day7.jpg?w=128&h=82 (http://pjbottoms.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/memorial-day7.jpg)
daughter speaks through her sobs,
The little sisters huddle around speechless and
dismay’d),
See, dearest mother, the letter says Pete will
soon be better.
Alas, poor boy, he will never be better (nor maybe
needs to be better, that brave and simple soul),
While they stand at home at the door he is
dead already,
The only son is dead.
But the mother needs to be better,
She with thin form presently drest in black,
By day her meals untouch’d, then at night
fitfully sleeping, often waking,
In the midnight waking, weeping, longing with
one deep longing,
0 that she might withdraw unnoticed, silent
from life escape and withdraw,
To follow, to seek, to be with her dear deadhttp://pjbottoms.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/memorial-day8.png?w=128&h=84 (http://pjbottoms.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/memorial-day8.png)
son.

Thanks to all of you guys who served!! I am humbled to be in the presence of true heroes. If not for the bravery and selflessness of the folks in the armed forces, we would have nothing.

Was lucky enough to be on a flight with a couple of ole boys coming home from over there the other day. I never got to speak to them nor did I want to bother them but you should have seen the welcome committee that they had on arrival! I wish I had my camera out. It was a great sight!

My hat's off to you guys!

The Old Man...

As I came out of the supermarket that sunny day, pushing my cart of groceries towards my car, I saw an old man with the hood of
his car up and a lady sitting inside the car, with the door open.

The old man was looking at the engine. I put my groceries away in my car and continued to watch the old gentleman from about twenty five feet away.

I saw a young man in his early twenties with a grocery bag in his arm, walking towards the old man. The old gentleman saw him coming too, and took a few steps towards him. I saw the old gentleman point to his open hood and say something.

The young man put his grocery bag into what looked like a brand new Cadillac Escalade and then turn back to the old man and I heard him yell at the old gentleman saying, 'You shouldn't even be allowed to drive a car at your age.' And then with a wave of his hand, he got in his car and peeled rubber out of the parking lot.

I saw the old gentleman pull out his handkerchief and mop his brow as he went back to his car and again looked at the engine. He then went to his wife and spoke with her and appeared to tell her it would be okay. I had seen enough and I approached the old man. He saw me coming and stood straight and as I got near him I said, 'Looks like you're having a problem.'

He smiled sheepishly and quietly nodded his head. I looked under the hood myself and knew that whatever the problem was, it was beyond me. Looking around I saw a gas station up the road and told the old man that I would be right back. I drove to the station and went inside and saw three attendants working on cars. I approached one of them and related the problem the old man had with his car and offered to pay them if they could follow me back down and help him.

The old man had pushed the heavy car under the shade of a tree and appeared to be comforting his wife. When he saw us, he straightened up and thanked me for my help. As the mechanics diagnosed the problem (overheated engine) I spoke with the old gentleman.

When I shook hands with him earlier, he had noticed my Marine Corps ring and had commented about it, telling me that he had been a
Marine too. I nodded and asked the usual question, 'What outfit did you serve with?'

He had mentioned that he served with the first Marine Division at Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima and=2 0Guadalcanal . He had hit all the big ones and retired from the Corps after the war was over. As we talked we heard the car engine come on and saw the mechanics lower the hood. They came over to us as the old man reached for his wallet, but was stopped by me and I told him I would just put the bill on my AAA card.

He still reached for the wallet and handed me a card that I assumed had his name and address on it and I stuck it in my pocket.. We all
shook hands all around again and I said my goodbye's to his wife. I then told the two mechanics that I would follow them back up to the station. Once at the station I told them that they had interrupted their own jobs to come along with me and help the old man. I said I wanted to pay for the help, but they refused to charge me..

One of them pulled out a card from his pocket looking exactly like the card the old man had given to me. Both of the men told me then, that they were Marine Corps Reserves. Once again we shook hands all around and as I was leaving, one of them told me I should look at the card the old man had given to me. I said I would and drove off.

For some reason I had gone about two blocks when I pulled over and took the card out of my pocket and looked at it for a long, long time. The name of the old gentleman was on the card in golden leaf and under his name...... 'Congressional Medal of Honor Society.'

I sat there motionless looking at the card and reading it over and over. I looked up from the card and smiled to no one but myself and marveled that on this day, four Marines had all come together, because one of us needed help. He was an old man all right, but it felt good to have stood next to greatness and courage and an honor to have been in his presence. Remember, OLD men like him gave you FREEDOM for America . Thanks to those who served...& those who supported them.

America is not at war. The U.S. Military is at war. America is at the Mall. If you don't stand behind our troops, PLEASE feel free to stand in front of them!

Remember, Freedom isn't "Free" -- thousands have paid the price so you can enjoy what you have today.

Good story...Strikes true because a lot of people now days not only don't have respect for older people, but also the vets that fought(and some died) so that we can be here today...I'm greatful everyday that we have so many fighting for us over there and here at home...I live close to Fort Polk and just want to shake every hand of every military person I see and tell them "Thank you"...No telling where we would be without them...

I think he means that other people will not let a man/woman in uniform buy his own drink, it's a great feeling when someone has done that to me in the past.
I made an old guy cry the other day, I was at Wal. Mart and saw an old Ranger wearing his Beret Proud, I took my kids up to him and introduced ourselves and told him I wanted my kids to meet a HERO, he thanked me and gave me a real firm handshake, and excused hisself he had tears in his eyes. When we left my son asked me why that HERO was crying, I told him that not enough people know what a true HERO is, and they need to know that they are appreciated for their Sacrifice. So yeah tell a soldier thanks, buy him/her a drink, or just talk to him/her.

That is probably what he meant...Wasn't entirely sure because there are some young soldiers that treat what they do as a joke...It's very upsetting when they are down at a restaurant/bar starting fights, giving a bad name to those that take pride in their job...Some people really have no idea what those vets REALLY have done for this country and it would be nice if they did...we have Veterans Day...I say we need veterans week or month and add something to a schools schedule to really show kids what they fought and died for...They glide through it, but don't really make it a point...They are just looked at as "old people" and it is really sad...:(
