This is targeted more towards the smaller tiller handle outboards. You know the tweeked out Tahatsus, Suzuki’s, 40 mercs, ect.

What kinda engine do you run, what kinda boat, prop, pitch and engine work.

I know these guys exist because they used to pass me in Sabine Refuge doing about 45mph. :(

i used to run a 15/42 semi-v alweld with a yammy forty in sabine, it would do about 44 or so with my duck huntin gear.... it would eat the 25's.

then had a 15 marsh runner we ran with a mega 25 with 50 carbs, etc.... it had a 50 inch bottom but even with a load still ran a good 40+

they were getting 85 horsepower out of some of the 40 mercs but it was hard to find a hull that would use all the power without pounding you to death.

Friend has a mega pushing 60 carbs, on a 14 ft bt (don't know width) i can hear him hoping all the way down the river.

Beats my friends 16'48 express with a 60 merc on the back.

My self, i put put along with my yammy 25 doing 32.

I had a 20/36 Weldcraft with a 40 Merc. 3 cylinder for duck and alligator hunting.
It would run around 35 mph. But it was propped for carrying a load, not for speed.
I carried 3 men, hunting stuff and a big lab to the blind and had to take off in shallow water.
I also carried heavy loads for alligator season, in shallow water.
It had a tunnel hull with a skeg in it for weeds.
I never fished out of it, just hunted and sometimes when crabbing in the marshes behind Cameron.
Hurricane Rita damaged her, I got her fixed up and Ike made her vanish. I never seen her again after Ike.

Sounds like a marsh machine.

Ray, do you think those long skinny 20ft boats perform better than a wider 17, or 18ft in the shallow H20?

Friend has a mega pushing 60 carbs

i dont think they made 60 carbs for those, he may have it at 60 HP

Lake area marine sold the 40's for a long time with mega stickers and fake serial number tags....

the game wardens in lacassine would pull the cowling and check your carbs tho....

Sounds like your doing good Fool, maybe I dont need a bigger engine I just need to drop about 100lbs. Is that a 2 or 3 cyl yamme?

B-Stealth, the wider bottomed boats prolly got up on plane faster, but when I was looking for a longer boat, that is all I could find. I bought it in the early 90's.
And I wanted a commercial rated boat. It had a thicker hull, more floatation and more ribs. Plus the transom was braced a little stronger. It had 2 braces between the ribs and the top of the transom.
The bad things about it was it didn't have a big casting deck and it was narrow. But at 20 ft., it had plenty of room.

LaAngler
10-22-2009, 04:03 PM
correct me if i am wrong but i think the 20 foot length boats would get up shallower b/c they don't squat as bad jumpin on plane as a 15 or 16 footer. plus with the tunnel the transoms are taller, but it robbed speed..

now with mud motor tech where it is they have taken over......

cabwiz2
10-22-2009, 04:07 PM
From what I have noticed a longer boat the same width will get up quicker(actually wont squat as much) but a shorter wider boat will squat less than a longer skinny boat. and a longer skinny boat that has enough horsepower to lift the bow will be faster than a shorter wide boat because less drag in the water.

B-Stealth
10-22-2009, 04:11 PM
La I defiantly agree with you on the 15 or 16 footers, not enought length to displace the weight of the engine.

But would a wider 18 ft perform better than a skinny 20 fter. Not speed here just holeshot and shallow water performance.

Mines 15'48, bout as fat as they come. Big casting deck.

I have two, first one is a 1448 Weld Craft with a 2004 40 merc with 60hp carbs and a 15p ss prop.Boat runs 52 with just me in it.(I even pull out the plywood floor to run that fast),it runs 48 with me and a buddy. My other boat is 1752 Allweld with a 70hp Yamaha with 90 carbs. It sits on a homemade jackplate and the boat has a tunnel welded in.If it can float it will get on plane, takes about 4 in of water! That boat only runs 45.I need to add a tach and play with some props.

I have a 12' x 32" alum. boat with a small go-devil.

The boat is rated for max of 8 hp. I tried a 15 hp outboard on it. After I put some weight up front, it would really get up and going. Don't know how fast it was going....I did not bring my GPS, but it was way to fast to feel safe in that small of a boat.

That outboard did not start easily and was not reliable so I did not ever use it on a hunt. It would have "kicked azz" compaired to the go-devil.

Marsh runner? Like the old ones? They started making them again, they tried selling my dad one for me, said it was LIGHT, aint nothing light about the new ones.

marshrunners were good boats, little heavy vs aluminum but with a wide bottom you dont lose much speed. they a lot better ride and quiet.

i really wish yamaha would make a tiller 15 inch shaft model of the 2 stroke 50

why oh why did they take our 3 cylinder 2 strokes away

Montauk17
01-13-2010, 04:03 PM
In order to go that fast on that small of a boat you would need atleast a 28 pitch prop. They do not make a 28 pitch prop for a v4 lower unit, unless it was custom made. Show me a video with a gps saying your going 65 and I might belive it.

You can thank the EPA for that. In the next few years there will be ZERO 2 strokes on the market. 2009 was the last year for any carb 2 strokes, now all there building in the plants are DFI motors like the optimax.

its funny how yall call out this dude for sayin his 115 johnson will run 65 but no one called out LaAngler when he said his 40 yamaha would run 44 loaded. that would be bs. i have been in a 44 mph duck boat loaded and that was with a 40 turned 60 merc, lift plate, and 18 pitch cleaver. NO ONE could keep up. i really doubt that 40 yamaha could either. no sweat though, EVERYONE loves to add on mph when the BS'n begins

It may be plausible...thats a lotta motor for a boat that size...I think most wanted to see a pic of it...modification such as weight added in the front of the boat and other things would have to have been done! Just a matter of curiosity I think!

You accumulate cash evertime you reply to posts, start threads, give reports etc.

From time to time we will have drawing where you can use your cash for buying "raffle" tickets to win items etc.
