Started pricing a new ecaller online. I found out quick how much those things are. I had been borrowed a few over the years. So I knew what the basic designs looked like. I researched a couple nights on speaker and amp recommendations, control options everything. I'll save you a lot of research and tell you everything you need. Yes by trade I am an electrician, but no none of this is really hard to wire up.
First you need some speakers the general consensus is pa horn speakers, but some also run mummers on regular car speaker. Horn speakers just don't put out any bass and the mummers sound more natural with bass. All yhe opinions I read recommend between a 20 and 100 watt rms speaker. Make sure when choosing a speaker you get one based on the rms not the max wattage. I went with the speco splc40rp which is a 40 watt max (about 20watt rms) speaker. Online you can find these speakers fairly cheap but to get me going this week without having to wait I paid $21.00 at Ralph's electronics in lafayette.
Next you'll need an amp. You'll want to pay attention to a couple things. Again base it on the rms wattage not the max wattage output. Also look at what ohms that's wattage output is rated at. If you run an 8ohm speaker on a 4ohm 25watt rms amp you 'll be getting significantly less wattage out of the amp. But you can wire in resistors. Once again because I procrastinated and needed to find everything in town I over paid. I bought a4ohm 25watt rms 2 channel amp from Ricky smith's. They use these for icechest radios so it's real compact. It also had an aux input on it so And came with an RCA patch cord so you attach a variety of sound sources to it. I paid $107 after tax but this is a high end amp. You can get one for half that price online.
Now you need a power source. I didn't know how many amps I was gonna be pulling so I figured bigger is better right? I went with a 12 volt 12Ah battery from radio shack which cost $29. My system ended up pulling minimal amperage so I can run for about 16 hours continuously if I want. Also got my speaker wire from there you can get 100ft of 16 gauge outdoor speaker wire for $30 there.
At this point all the extra is preference. I chose my I phone as my sound source. You can download some mp3 calls online or buy a cd and rip it to your computer then load it on your phone. Tim grounds makes some great high quality sound tracks.
All i really needed at this point was a double ended 3.5 mm aux cable. I didn't want to have the enclosure with the amp in my blind with me though. Especially my layout, so I decided to make it bluetooth capable. They make bluetooth recievers that you can get online between 20 and thirty buck. I happen to have a cheap portable bluetooth speaker that I paid $20 for at wall Mart though. I opened up disconnected the speaker from the board and wired In a 3.5 mm aux male. Paired it with my phone plugged it into the amp bam! Complete wireless operation.
All together I paid $230 and this thing is loud. If I can see geese with my eyes they'll be able to hear me. I just need to come up with an idea for the enclosure I want something I can store the speakers in also to carry them out into the field. I ordered everything I needed online to make a 4 speaker system so once I get that put together I'll be selling this one if anyone is interested. I just know I could have built it cheaper, But I wanted something for this week.
Here it is all wired up. I'll post another pic once I get it inside the enclosure tonight. If anybody needs help building one just shoot me a PM I'll walk you through step by step.
