View Full Version : Killing big fish?

make it 1 fish IMO.....why do you need a stringer of big fish? Can't talk about trying to conserve the big ones and do a 3 or 5 fish stringer IMO.

Just wondering, how many fish do you think the star tourney kills every year?

How many yoyo's without a scale bring in 4 and 5 lb trout because they thought it was a 8 lber.

I am quite sure someone could make the arguement that 10 times the amount of fish are killed every year in the star than compared to any other tourney, not just in big lake but all over the state.

Is that what you call conservation?

Does this make CCA an oxymoron?

Just to clarify this is not me bashing the CCA, personally I like what CCA stands for, but practice what you preach!

my .02..... if you ***** enough, your just *****ing... if you dont like to kill big fish, put them in my cooler, i'll kill 'em. I fish for the meat... I only fish a double handful of times per year. Until you start paying my boat insurance/bill, fuel bill, and buying my tackle, then i'll release 8lb trout. Til then... **** off !!!

Not meaning this towards anyone.... just saying

Far Too many! BUT.....CCA finally this year, thanks to many in LC area, is instituting a catch & release format for trout for STAR only on Big Lake

.....and thanks to me, CCA adopted catch & release for the trout shoot out about 5 years ago, which at the time, wasn't a very popular move.

And we know you aren't bashing CCA, but me, but its ok, I can take it. My conservative ways don't go over too well on this board.

And as far as the yo-yos that think a 4 lber is an 8, that will never change. You have trophy hunters who know the difference and will always have some who don't know any better.

I don't knock them, its their fish they caught and its their choice of what to do with it. It is our responsibility as an organization (CCA) to give the angler the option if they want to keep it alive to fight another day.

2 things:

#1) I am not bashing you are the orginazation, so quit feeling sorry for yourself. I support the CCA and you, but do not act like these little tourneys we hold are any worse than the star.

#2) You say it is your responsibility to give the angler the option, I am confused, didn't you just complain about us having a tourney in big lake because it is killing all the big fish?

Like this one time I was loading my boat up and caught about 15 fish or so. Guy walks up and asks if I want a trout since it was only one he caught. I said sure if u don't want it. Pulls it out the ice chest and it's 5+ lbs. Put it on scale at home and it was 5 1/4.

Yea, you just don't hear about it. They only show the top three leaders at that time. I think you are missing my point, I do not diagree with having the star, I think it generates alot of money for a good cause.

What I do diagree with is the statement drost made about these tourneys being held. The 20 or so fish above 23" that will be killed in one of these little local tourneys amounts to nothing on the Star. Kinda of reminds me of that ole sayin "Do as I say, not as I do"!

last i checked they do, the shootout is a one fish, live bonus format

I'm not bashing you or anyone else here but just want to point something out. Alot of people say "I don't keep any fish I catch, I release them all to swim another day because I have all the fish I want at home" I have a question, how did you get all the fish you want at home? Do you go buy fish at the store to load up your freezer then pay out the anal cavity to put gas in your boat to just go out and pull a fish up then throw it back in? I'm sorry but if I'm paying damn near $3 a gallon to put gas in my boat, I'm going to keep, kill and grill EVERY legal fish I put my hands on no matter who cries or moans and groans about it! Sorry but this is just the way I feel about this whole issue. If you want to throw every fish back that you catch then I'm happy for you. But don't go around trying to make everybody and their momma do it too, especially when alot of us aren't lucky enough to have the opportunity to get out on the water as much as others.

When are homemade biologist going to stop worrying about the fish population and leave it up to the experts. You aint putting a dent in the fish population with your rod and reel. you just helping keep things in balance. Now go out there and fish, have fun, and quit worrying about keeping a few hundred 5lb trout a year it aint hurting nothing.

i agree ray... i release every hardhead and gaftop i catch... I also release big reds, drum, and illegal fish so i practice my own form of conservation... all the rest of you know-it-alls that cry when people keep big fish go whine about it on a Texas board with the other people that care...

A man that has a masters degree in MARINE BIOLOGY told me that the number of big fish a year that get caught is minuscule compared to the number of them out there; and that the real breeding stock is the smaller trout although they carry less eggs than the big one there are many more of them. So maybe we should really be releasing the small trout and only keep the big ones...that would seem to follow with some of you guys logic.

Problem is the WADE fisherman want the bag limit to be as little as possible. That way, less people will buy boats; in turn, less people on the water which makes it easier for the wade fisherman. I would not own a boat if the limit was 5 fish!
Also, I guess deer hunters should not kill that trophy buck......

Also, the past three years I have fished the Trout Shootout the majority of the fish that were brought were alive! very surprising.

Especially last year I believe 6 or 7 of the top ten fish were released. That tourney REWARDS anglers for live trout brought in and weighed alive. This is a conservation based tourney-to raise money for our estuary, very good cause.

Far Too many! BUT.....CCA finally this year, thanks to many in LC area, is instituting a catch & release format for trout for STAR only on Big Lake

when i catch fish and im hungry ill keep em , if someone ( family or friends) asks me to keep em for them cuz they dont have any sure ill keep them . i always used to keep a freeze full then i noticed by june i would still have fish from the previous july and that was with me giving away the majority i catch as well as eating a ton of fish. so for me i try throw it back if its not gonna get eatin by that week by me or who ever i give it to. as far as the big fish thing to me big trout and reds dont taste as good as the 12-14 and 16-18in reds so i try to throw em back but if you are fishing with me and wanna keep it , hey thats all on you im not here topoint the finger. sure i have fish mounted on the wall , if i catch a 9lb trout will i eat it no way , will it mount it prolly not id just get a replica made. im no bioligst but the thing ive heard is them 8-9 lb trout are on their last leg that not always but the fight of being caught messes w them bigens, that most dont live much longer, knowing this will that stop me from throwing it back? no . but like i said this is me and i dont look down on anyone who is within thier legal limits , that is your right .

I keep a couple meals of trout in the freezer, that's all. This past winter, I ran out due to the cold and fresh water, but I had plenty of Flounder to cover us for the winter.
If CCA pushes to drop the limits, and succeeds, I will fish more days and fill the freezer up. I have plenty of time off the way I work. It's a public water, public fish. Drop the limit one more time in Big Lake and not the rest of the state and I will keep every fish, every day I fish, no matter the size, and post pictures on every fishing forum on the internet. I don't target big fish, if I catch one, it is luck. If I want to eat it or release it, that is my choice.
It's bull***** to keep crying about the limits on Big Lake and not the rest of the state.
Everyone has an agenda/opinion, but don't push them on me.
I support CCA, that is also my choice. If I want to catch fish, that's my choice. If I want to eat fish, that's my choice.

looka here bud... I didn't say or try to persuade anyone to throw their fish back. All i said is that I'd rather not keep them. I never mentioned why. And just to let you all know, it is because I don't like cleaning fish and I dont even like the taste of fish. I just enjoy the challenge of figuring out what makes them bite and enjoy bringing them into the boat to look at. I don't give a crap if you keep them, as you can see we keep A LOT of fish ourself and only like i said before "my dad would rip my head off if i wouldnt" because he loves fish and hosting big fish fries at the house.
