3"-#4 for teal season, then 3 1/2-#2 for the regular season. Black Clouds are really dirty, and too expensive. I prefer Kent or Winchester. Chokes make a big differance as well . I use a patternmaster extended range choke. Basically it all depends on what you can afford ,and a little field testing to see what works best for you ..

3" #3 or 3" #2

looking for the most FPS at good price...shot Kent last year.

cmdrost 07-29-2010 09:04 AM

generally shoot 3" #4 or 3 1/2" #2......never been into the diff brands of shells.

Ditto. When I hunted, I needed a lot of shells cause I hunted every day of the season. I shot what ever was cheapest. They all worked the same.
I got good deals on Estate. Some don't like them, I did. They worked just as good as Remington and Winchester.

3.5" #3 remington sportsman. Fairly priced and I have never had a problem with them I shot a little over a case last year and didn't have a hang up.

31/2" black cloud's the only box of shells i had left after this season. mainly bc i wouldnt shoot, em too expensive and im a big ole puss

3 1/2" Black Clouds with the Patternmaster Black Cloud choke. I need as much range as I can get since I mostly hunt Shell Island and Wax Lake.

I looked into the black cloud choke but at the time They didn't make one for the Vinci so I went with the medium range pattern master...I find that the pattern is too tight on the long and extended range

Anything but expert. They are cheap for a reason. If you open one up and look at the BB'S they are not all round.

CajunSteelsetter 08-09-2010 11:16 PM

3" #3 dry lok. Don't know if its true, since I don't shoot BC, but I've heard that there's actually a specific choke brand that's supposed to give optimum patterns with the BC. Heard that some chokes just sling BC like crap.

Hatin' on the X-pert's, all I shoot cause they are cheap! If you hit them they will fall, just like any other shell, the trick is to "hit them" ;)

Yeah there is one.......I believe its called Vortex.......Kick's makes them.

I bought one last year but never used it:spineyes:

My deadliest round in the old days of lead shot was #8's. Close teal didn't have a chance. Now I shoot #4's with a #2 backup. When I hunt the rice field with Fr. Gaddy, he brings two guns. His normal duck gun and a 3 1/2" goose gun with black cloud. He kills geese that I don't even bother to waste a shell on.

kents 3" # 2 with a kicks high flyer choke is a very good combo for me with my SBE II, just a little rough on the close shots but deadly for cleaning up

Patternmaster makes one also, they teamed up with Black Cloud to make the Black Cloud choke. I didn't buy the choke at first cuz I thought it was ridiculous but after having a horrible weekend of hunting I went buy the choke. My next hunt I shot the original choke for a while then switched to the Patternmaster black cloud choke and it was like night and day. With my original choke in the spread was horrible but it was damn near perfect with the Patternmaster in. The original choke shoots a great pattern with any other shells, just not the black clouds.

FYI, just bought a case of the RIO Blue Steel 3" 1-1/4OZ # 4 at Cabela's for 98 bucks with tax....I shot them last year and they seemed like good shells.....Also, they have them in #2 and #3 shot.

Estate Shells

Cajun Fastmart on Hwy. 27 in Carlyss has Estate Shells. Charley (the owner) said that Estate shells were hard to get last year, but he has a good selection this year and will be getting in more.

I used black clouds also with regular chokes and hated them..I only shoot kent's 3'' #4's & #2's...I have a patternmaster now I wonder if the regular patternmaster will work better now with BC's??? mine is a medium range PM..

The choke I was using was a Patternmaster but not the Black Cloud one. You could tell there was a difference between the Black Clouds and Dryloks.

jldsc 08-16-2010 11:18 AM

soooo...to get the full affect of the black clouds I need a different patternmaster choke, if so I think ill just save my money i had real good results with the kents and my regular PM choke last season
