go to school. enjoy your college years. they are the best times of your life. fish for the tourney team. it will be memories and friends you will have for a lifetime. get a college education. like one poster said, engineering -- mechanical, chemical, petroleum. always have that to fall back on. don't take the easy money now. it is noted that college graduates earn over 2 million more dollars per lifetime on the average than non college graduates.

I'd definitely go with MechE or ChemE if you want to work in the oilfield. PETE imo is too specific. I know lots of Mech and Chem guys who made nearly the same amount as pete's out of college but had way more opportunities.

Hell I'm in environmental eng and the company I work for right now does mainly h,s,& e for oil companies. Don't make as much, but I like the job and i'm probably not stressed as much.

the main thing is if you love what you do for a living, then it don't even feel like you have a job! Remember money is just a thing, college experiences, the friends you'll make, and fishing are the real important things!! Trust your gut :cheers:

No sir I love what I do. Seriously though, petroleum is too specific. With a mechanical or chemical degree, you can pretty much do anything in any part of the world

Its only 4 years, don't let hunting/fishing get in the way. I failed out of Louisiana Tech because of ducks. I had $8k in student loans with nothing to show for it and had to start all over. Biggest regret of my life right there. There will be plenty of time to hunt and fish so hunting/fishing should have nothing to do with your choice of college. Go to school and make that money and then you can afford a nice place to hunt/fish.

I have a Master's in Biology and I love my job but am seriously seriously thinking about going back for civil engineering to do coastal work.

I have to keep saying this every time i see you post about this. If you have the ability to get an engineering degree (Petro, electrical, mechanical, chemical) you would be selling yourself short by getting a Petroleum Services degree instead.

It's like being a doctor versus a nurse.

Engineering will be better job, more money, and easier to find a job.
Companies send out head hunters to recruit for jobs at most universities.

Number 1- fishing will always be there.

I could not agree more....I had a job making killer money but I hated it. Now I am making half of what I was but don't mind getting up and going to work.

I'm interning now and graduate in may. While working and going to school you still can fish fairly often. I put another vote for engineering. If your going to school might as well make it worth your while. A more than average income while working 40 hrs is hard to beat.

Are you wanting to go pro fishing? Do you think you are good enough? IF this is the case, I would go the 2nd. If you don't plan on trying the pro circuit, education.

Then even if you get the education, you can try the pro circuit later.

Option1 with a school that will give you an academic scholarship. Aren't you a straight A student? Kick butt on the ACT/SAT and you'll have many more choices. Get your degree now. And make it in Engineering. Not an associates or Technology degree. You 'll make million more in your lifetime. In fact, many private schools (Rice, Tulane, Others) will give you extra consideration because you do tourney fish. They want diversity. Compete and try to get in the best school you can. You won't regret it. Cash in on your hard work.

And aren't you a writer? Engineers with communication skills are in high demand and move up fast! Be sure to put that aren't every school application.

Go to school Fool and bust your arse !!! If you can fish and keep the grades then more power to ya' brother... Enjoy those years, have fun, and work hard because that will be the foundation of your life ahead of you :D ...
