Mine was with a guide who took us to the Cameron jetties, we stayed in one spot the whole trip and caught trout on live shrimp. I wasn't paying for the trip so I couldn't complain too much. The other guys in our boat didn't fish much so they were just happy to catch fish. The guy who paid for the trip fished topwater in West Cove with another guide from the same service. That would have been more fun to me. We caught more fish than they did but I was pretty bored.

My best trip with a guide was out of Fourchon, He didn't even touch his rod. He found a place and anchored and we were steadily catching fish. His grandson was the deck hand and the kid netted most every fish and took them off so our hands did not even get slimy. Then the guide said reel in this is too slow! He took us to another spot where the action was faster and the fish were bigger. The kid couldn't keep up and I wanted to feel a little slime anyway. This guide was a perfect host, he tried to ensure that everyone caught fish and had a good time. I suppose that is what most guides try to do. I see lots of guides who seem like they are the primary fisherman on the boat, they catch most of the fish and the sport has to net the guides fish if it is big. If the sport hooks a big fish the guide will come and net the fish other wise the sport is on his own.
Not tryng to high-jack your thread just giving the sports a chance to respond.

So you accepted an invitation to a "fishing trip" and caught lots of fish? You were bored because you didn't catch on topwater? So, what would your reaction had been if you would've caught less fish than your buddy, but on topwater? Just curious. No offense, but it's customers like that which makes a guide's life a little tougher. Never happy. Not enough fish, fish are too small, keepers, but small. EVERY trip I went on I was asked "what's the plan Cap?" And my response was always "Let's just go fishing and see how the day plays out."

Well I can tell u this, 1st Im no life long guide who does this everyday so I have a way different attitude than some

As far as guide fishing, here in Big Lake its not like the east side where everyday you can go sit on anchor and catch 200 dink trout with a pop n cork
I fish to find fish, buy when I get on them good, i set anchor and usually just net or take fish off. But most of the time we have to fish

I guide for fun and rather teach someone something than sit with live bait. I dont use live bait unless requested and then I still try to talk out of!!

But on this hand, as far as guys who do this for a living I can see where it geta tiring and old. After fishing x amount of days in a row some just get live bait to sit and catch fish and thats it ( you learn nothing, you see nothing, you get no knowledge)

It really depends on the sports. If they are somewhat experienced and want to learn more about the body of water and how to catch fish rather than just filling a limit or viseversa it needs to be discussed with the captian before hand so he can have a game plan in place.
And i completely agree with W about the west end being completly different than the east side and ppl really need to realize that before ever booking a trip. If you want to catch 200 12 in fish with shrimp under a cork book a trip in Grand isle not BL. Or they can just go bream fishing in henderson its about the same thing.

theres a difference in these arguments just as for someone who pays to hunt deer in a high fence vs someone who pays a guide to show him where the trails are and where deer might be. some people like to sit and shoot a pet deer and some like a challenge. problem is, the guide will never know if you dont speak up before you go and wait to post about it on a forum. its only natural for the guide to do whats easy to catch fish.

Ever had someone ask you to net their gaftop? Bc they wanted to mount it?

I was happy, it was fun to watch my buddy catch fish and have a good time. I'm pretty easy-going. I was just bored fishing shrimp in one spot all day. I would have been more pleased fishing top-water and catching only a few. Everybody is different, If I was paying for the trip, I would have talked with the guide and asked for a move and some different kind of fishing. It was all good. I know guides have a tough job sometimes. It not like taking your buddies fishing, there are some weird birds out there.

Nah, can't say I've ever had the happen. I literally cut every line on a gafftop. It's faster for me to cut and retie than to get the hook out of the slimeball and mess up a good towel!

Worst trip was the one I got drunk and bought at a banquet and forgot all about. Lost the damn paper and never took the trip! :(

Best was a trip out of Grand Isle. It was my first time saltwater fishing and the capt was awesome. From what I gathered, he was contracted by the guide we hired to take half of the group out. The other capt told him to stay inland only. He asked if we wanted to catch and screw him. We're going where the fish are. We jumped from platform to platform filling up the box. The guide only fished when we got to a new spot until we found the fish. After that he put his rod down and worked his @$$ off. We got back with a full box, and the other boat got back with about 4 or 5 fish.

I've mastered then slime balls. Flipped in boat grabbed n hollers back in water in 1 min max. Catch a lot of em in vbay! On tops, sand eels, etc...., then I'm so salt life I dip my hand in gas and light it on fiya to burn the slime off!

Used to go with a guide outta Fourchon area for several years. He got big into tournaments and we figured him out - he was scouting most the time for big fish. If we ever got into a bunch of good fish, he would leave em and take us to the rocks to catch the 12" fish:rotfl: Deckhand ended up guiding after that and we went with him from then on.

My boss went to Delacroix last year and said it was the best/worst trip of his life. Got there at daylight and guide found the fish, dropped anchor and they caught their 100 trout in about an hour and that was it, time to go in:eek: They were back at ramp and fish cleaned by 9:30. Guide had an afternoon trip to get ready for

Catch 100 trout by 930 what possibly more could you want??? Sounds like a successful guided trip

I know right! He said it was the best as far as fishing but worst as far as experience:confused: Guide never stopped fishing, hardly spoke, just acted like a robot:rotfl: As long as I am catching fish, I could care less what the guide does! There is plenty of time to talk when not catching fish. This is just how some people look at things, you probably know. Some people are hard to please, hell some of them can't be pleased and I think my boss is one of them, old SOB:grinpimp:

I fished with a guide on Lake Fork year ago. It was a night trip. I'll never fish with another guide that smokes. He would not crank motor or put trolling motor down till be smoked every time we moved. The first spot we pull-up on its a little windy but I catch 3 bass over 5 pounds in just a few minutes. He tell us to put rods up so we can go somewhere else. He forgot anchor and did not feel like fighting the wind. I was so pissed the rst of the night.

Damn....there are only 12" trout over here on the "east side"? All the 13" and bigger ones are in Big Lake?

YellaBlazer 10-25-2013 08:29 PM

Let your guide know beforehand that you want to catch and release. Nothing like bringing in a box full of fish, clean and bag everything, then hear "You're going to take all of these fish, right?"

We all know that there are big trout caught in places like ponchatrain, Brenton sound, and Venice but those places don't produce big fish (7 lbs and up) consistently especially on artificials like big lake, sabine, and other bay systems in Texas. The only place that comes close is ponchatrain. I came up fishing on the east side and still do but I enjoy a different type of fishing now and prefer to fish the style of fishing that the west side provides.
