Yep it's an island blind. Is that a bad thing?

why would you not put it on a levee to make it easier to hide, instead of putting it smack dab in the middle of the cut and make it look like a sore thumb? now it is the only pile of grass in the middle of the field.:shaking::shaking:

Can't put it on a levee. We killed 600 birds out of it last yr not including teal. it looks natural once it's brushed. 2nd crop rice won't be cut. Its already almost standing taller than the blind. You've never hunted out of an island blind?

I think the best part of an island blind is when the birds start to get levee shy at the end of the season

yes i have hunted out of an island blind in a marsh...

How does an island blind in a rice field look "natural"?? so the second crop wont be cut? so will yall just flood the water as high as you can? i think i am missing something here..

He's not nearly the first one to do this. I've hunted out of island blinds on several different occasions. We had one when I was younger. Whether it sticks out or not the ducks don't seem to have a problem with it. And like Meaux said later in the season the ducks get levee shy and will only land in the middle of a cut. We have patches of Roseauxs(I guess) come up in the middle of our crawfish lakes and we kill ducks standing up in the middle of them. Same situation.

Hard to explain further if u still confused. The farmer still buffaloes sections how we want it done. We keep some standing on the sides going east and west so it makes it look similar to a levee. Once you harvest the first crop u can manipulate it how you want. Maybe that's what ur confused about.

no, this is not the source of my confusion... i have never once came across ducks that were levee shy at end of season.

just think that you are making more work for yourself.

Rye grass on the dirt . and Then Use cut green cedar branches. They don't brown up like pine does.

Man, if I were you, i'd just put the blind IN the levee.

What is farmers reasoning behind that, if you don't mind me asking?

It's the way the field is set up. One side is a tree line, one side is the border of a rest pond, and the other side borders another blind. Then the 4th side is a levy he uses to travel with his farm equipment aka a main farm traffic corridor. There used to be a levy that sectioned off north and south sections of our huge field but they took the levy out . We kills a good amount more birds now that it's an island blind.

I would recommend taking some of that dirt away from the blind to make the "island" smaller. You can then plant rice right up to the blind. After the first harvest, break the stubble down over the edges of the blind. I have killed a lot of ducks out of island blinds like this but the island was smaller. I've also killed a lot of ducks at Catahoula Lake with green pine brush on a stick up blind or on a floating blind. Looks like a big pine tree in the middle of an ocean, but the ducks will decoy. They don't like it when it turns brown for some reason. If you use pine, make sure to get the cut ends in the water so they stay green longer. My 2 cents. Good luck!

We didnt seem to have any problems with the ducks coming in. Just had a lil problem with my shooting that morning, or shells, or them green heads were wearing body armour, cuz the feathers were flying, just werent falling. lol But now that I think about it, that blind probably would be better "ON THE LEVEE":rolleyes::rolleyes:
