In a nut shell.....gas, crappy mileage while towing. But will tow it just like your Titan. Diesel, better mileage towing. The rest is history. You already knows my thoughts though.

Here is my take as I am in the hotshot business. How many times are you going to tow your boat as diesels are more expensive to operate and maintain. Plus diesels are designed to be run not driven a block and shut off. I have a 07 dodge that when hooked to my 40 ft mini float I have pulled over 27000 pounds with. My truck has 225000 miles on the 6.7 Cummins Motor with the aisan six speed automatic transmission in it. I just spent my first 3000$ on repairs on the truck because of the clean burn exhaust malfunctioning and taking the turbo out. My engine uses no oil and my transmission performs like the day it came from the factory. But I change the tranny oil and the engine oil as the book says. I recently chipped it as to bypass my egr valve and to turn off the clean burn exhaust feature as I don't need that on my truck anymore. I average around 10mpg loaded and around 14 unloaded but my trailer weighs in at 9000 empty. Just remember guys that when you chip a truck your tranny and other componets will be weekend and that is why I only put 60 more hp on mine. In my opinion most gas engines should pull a boat of that weight with 0 problems and you will save money on fuel if you don't pull the boat everyday.

It is a good engine, but with all the heavy weight he pulls, it does have more break downs than one would if they only pull a boat. I had the old loud 5.9L and did good pulling a loaded cattle trailer. But the 7.3L Ford does better and the truck lasted longer. The Dodge was not a well built truck. |

580 miles or so round trip. Not one way.
But by the time I get my boudin fix on the way to work and home, it is 600 miles. |

I have the new 2010 F150 with the sway and tow package. I am towing around 5500 lbs.
I have been very pleased with the truck. the new F150 has more room in the back than the F250 it seems. 4X4 helps at certain landing like BSM but for the most part never use it. 11 MPG when pulling..... |
I gotta stop and let some diesel out of my tank sometimes when im towing..>Thats how good my mileage is!!!!

Matt has a 2010 F150 and it tows well. I have a 06 F350 powerstroke and I can move my house if I need. i get about 15 all around and 10 when towing my 13000 fifth wheel. I believe Matt's towing capacity is 9000 or so and I think his milage is about 1 or 2 mpg better than mine. His truck rides very good.

One other thing to think about, you can find gas anywhere, sometimes it can be hard to find diesel.
|
well, while everyone is getting away from the fords, I have the tundra, I regularly pull a 20' trailer with heavy trees weighing thousands of pounds without a problem. I can also haul my skid steer which weighs 8500lbs,and I figure my trailer is at least 1500-2000 lbs. This also is not a problem,so when I hook on to my 22' bay boat,it pulls like a feddur. We just dont really like talkin about gas mileage. I figure Im only getting about 10-12 mpg pulling. Very strong truck though for a gas engine, and the ride is super.

I just test drove the 2011 f250 6.2l gas, and that thing hauls *** and very nice interior!!

Just buy another boat and leave it at Big Lake so you wont have to tow one anymore. Probably be cheaper than a new truck too...LOL

You need a 5/8 ton F-200 dieseline, problem solved

Any 5.x L gas burner will pull a rig your size, but obviously with reduced fuel economy. You have to ask your self just how often will you be towing and how long are the tows. I pull a 25' camper with a F150 5.4L 373rear end, but it is on relatively flat ground (LA, east TX, AR, MS AL). I pull a 30hp tractor and gear as well. You have to realize the pulling power of a gas burner is adequate for occassional pulling and moderately distanced towing as well, you just can't drag race with it or cruise along at 75 or 80 mph. As for the diesels go Ford keeps changing their motors for two reasons. 1: They haven't developed a motor that will give the needed fuel economy along with the required power that will burn low sulfur diesel and more importantly 2: They are a majority owner of Cummings Diesel and Cummings has a lucrative deal with Dodge right now. Until that contract expires, Ford won't make waves with Dodge which would jeopardize the Cummings contract. I've been told the new 2011 6.4L F250/350's will only produce 15-17 mpg hwy not towing. My pops has a 2002 F350 7.3 liter getting 19-22 mpg hwy not towing 15-17 towing. It's just not justifyable for my needs to spend the extra $ on a diesel (purchase price and routine maintenance) to to what I do that a V-8 gas burner can't do. Sorry for the rambling, that's just my $.02 plus $.02 more.

One more thing Ford's current Diesel motors are notoriously bad for not liking is biodiesel. Most truckstops are selling a blended diesel with biodiesel added into it. For the big rigs, it isn't a problem because they rarely stay parked for long and burn so much fuel that. A diesel pickup on the otherhand may sometimes sit a few days without being ran, and sometimes a tank of fuel may last a week or two or more. The problem is the injectors. When this diesel sits, especially in colder weather, the biodiesel will jellyfy, so to speak. When the motor is started this jellied fuel then clogs the injectors and whammo, no power. It's actually a problem with a lot of diesel pick up trucks, but Ford seems to be having the most issues with it.

I have a friend that does hotshot. He just traded his 04 Cummins/dooley with 350,000 for a new one just like the old one. All he ever had to fix was a water pump at 280,000. I got the 06 cummins in a 4-wheel drive. Ride is rough as a cobb but by far superior to the F-250 which I still own. With that said I can give an unbiased opinion on both. |
