Per person entry fee sounds good but if it is a stringer tournament boat teams are the way to go. I hate to say it but if you give 100% to charity you are going to lose people. The 4th of July Rodeo gives plaques or trophies and they have very little turnout for the inshore divisions. I also think there should be a no Pro/Guide rule. The second Bruce Baugh singed up 98% of the people there had no chance of winning. Google Bruce and you will see he is as pro as it gets trout fishing. I was surprised he showed up for this type of thing, I guess his corky sales are down :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I think if you cut out the money payout the people it will eliminate are the guides/pros from competing...

One of the reasons I support 100% entry fee to charity....also, think about those that volunteered time and talent for a charitable cause....didn't seem right to speckdaddy, fool, micah and others when the cash started being handed out.

Trash fish pot winner take all? Seems okay with those kinda optional side bets. But the overall winning team just oughta get a nice trophy/cup to keep for a year....

I mean guys here is one of the best big trout fishermen in the state and he came to OUR tourney to donate his money and compete. We put up the money to help get people excited and we never thought we woulda had as much stuff as our spondors sent. Its only gonna get better guys

I can promise everyone this - that I will bust my butt for sponsors for 2011. We had great sponsors this year, but was bad timing with regards to some of the other majors due to their year end budgeting. This year we have the turnout numbers and overall participation to support the cause - game on!!

With regards to "pros" fishing - the SC Tourneys are open to all SC members. Plus, I'd rather be spanked by Bruce as opposed to Catdaddy :D

hooters...... i think that would b a great sponsor!

In general terms I'm just trying to make the point that overall turnout next year could be hurt when people see who won this year. As for myself I like the level of competition that someone like Bruce brings. The only way to get to the next level is to compete against people that are already there.

Generally people go to Casino's because there is a chance they will win big money. Its the same with fishing tournaments, no matter what the cause the tournaments with the big turnouts are the ones with good pay outs. Everyone wants to help the kids but most also want to feel like they have a chance to win big.

Bruce Baugh, Steve Nelson & Eddy Hicks are the best of the best on the lake. I admire these guys for their knowledge, skill and ability to produce trophy trout. I strive to one day be of their caliber and would not want to win a tournament unless they were in it. These are stand up guys who enjoy competing just as much as we do. The reason they show up is the SaltyCajun tournament gives them a chance to compete against guys who love to fish as much as they do. I give them props because they proved they are the best once again.

The best of the best did not show up. Maybe one of the best. Its crazy the caliber of fisherman that fish Big Lake and consistently catch trophy fish year around that you will never hear of. I have had the pleasure to meet a few and they are like Jedi with a fishing pole. I swear some of them use the force to catch fish. I'm sure Bruce Bauge is the same, matter of fact he is so nice he often parks right in front of me when I'm on a wade and shows me all the fish I could have caught. But as I said my comments are aimed at getting the largest turnout as possible. The average fisherman is not going to pay his money to get beat up on by guides. The CCA has rules against guides/pros and look how big the CCA Shootout has gotten. If you want a high turnout successful tournament, then copy high turnout successful tournaments. Remember the bigger the turnout the more money for the kids. This year was a class act and I can not wait till next year...

rosska 03-18-2010 08:52 PM

The CCA also holds their tournament in the prime of live bait season which sucks. I think this tournaments leader board was reflective of skill. If this was the CCA tournament you would have seen a leader board full of croaker soakers that were sitting on the jetties. I have no problem with this I just hope the CCA will have two separate division’s lures or bait. There would be the same turnout but allow true anglers to compete against each other rather than the luck of a bait fisherman.

Why didnt they show up?

evis102 03-18-2010 09:08 PM

All they wanna do is catch big fish and be left alone. Most are guides from Texas that come over here to get away. I think I remember your kin to Will D. ask him about them they are a very nice but quiet bunch.

cmdrost 03-19-2010 08:19 AM

Sorry Ross,

But I gotta agree with Evis here......CCA Trout Shoot Out will never not allow live bait. Thats outgrageous to think it. It might not take "skill" to fish live bait, but its a proven big fish tactic that works in summer time. Fishing isn't neccessarily about who can twitch their corky the best, its also knowing what the fish are eating and when.

That is also why we have ours set at $25 a man and not per team and we don't allow guides. To let the average fisherman go out and compete with everyone.

I knew i had no chance of winning especially after my motor trouble but I fish because its what I love to do....It did not affect my choice to enter again for as long as we have the tourney just because someone who has been fishing a lot longer than me won. I was actually excited when somebody said he was in the tourney because I knew he would be bringing in some hawgs. As Ross said I hope that I can get my skill level to somewhere close to his one day. The only reasons I showed up for the tourney were to support a great cause, meet a bunch of new people, and spend some time on the water and if I caught some fish it was an added bonus..
