Best of both worlds. No idea why they came out that way

seachaser250 10-06-2015 08:48 AM

I'm confused for two reasons...

1. Why would people have some ax to grind against someone that has a ribbon dog?

2. Why would people have some ax to grind against someone that has a "rock" dog?

If both dogs are well behaved in the blind, pick up the birds and bring them back.....who really cares?

73 pages seems like a reasonable place to stop.

How to piss off your hunting buddy who owns a ribbon dog.

This method works particularly well if the dog is having an "off" day and the owner is very upset with ribbon dog.

Step 1-Wait until your buddy has blown his whistle and thrown hand signals for 5 minutes trying to get Ribbon Dog to pick up bird on the edge of the decoys. Best delivered when the owners anger and frustration are optimum.

Step-2 Throw a shotgun shell for the dog to mark the duck.

Step-3 Dog retrieves duck.

Step-4 Tell dog owner, "see that was easy didn't even need hand signals"

Step-5 absorb the full hatred and disgust your hunting partner may unleash upon you.

Step-6 Find a new hunting buddy with ribbon dog and start over at step 1.

There you go, that's how you convert a ribbon dog 1 shotgun shell at a time.

Ducktrickster 10-06-2015 07:36 PM

I like that.

I have both a ribbon and "rock" dog. If your dog was capable and you put in the time to train it yourself or put in the time to keep your dog trained up properly after if was sent off for training(this is a step the majority of ribbon dog owners don't do)......What would you rather have?

A dog that marks properly, retrieves to hand, takes hand signals on blinds or a dog you have to throw an object the majority of the time to get it to mark the bird?

Seachaser....The argument comes from the owners of descent rock dogs that have never hunted with descent ribbon dogs.

My point was...both dogs get the job done. But no one can honestly admit they wouldn't rather have a dog that is capable of being handled on blind retrieves.

Rocks are free, good training is 3K+.

Training is free too if you get off your couch and put in the effort.

Exactly!! Rock dog gets the job done. nothing wrong with that as long as the dog is well behaved in the blind.

It doesn't compare to a dog that can take a cast and run blind retrieves though.

I agree, on well behaved. I would have to say that the main requirement (besides actually fetching the duck) for a good hunting dog to me is that it doesn't go until its released and that it comes back when commanded.

Saves me from shooting a dog in the back of the head when it breaks and saves me from being that idiot I hear always screaming at his dog across the whole parish to come back. I have passed on some chances to go on nice hunts because I absolutely can't stand dealing with those dogs and their owners.

Dude, I got a Red Fox/Silver Lab mix that will work circles around your Ribbon Dog.

He retrieves triples in trip, can your Ribbon dog do that?

I will pay you a ridiculous premium for either one of those rare colors! No, i don't need to see the pedigree or health clearances.

C-Bass2mouth 10-08-2015 03:52 PM

Does your dog have to have actual ribbons to be included in the ribbon category? My $200 female is a savage, but I never got into the hunt test scene.
