Lets talk food plots
 

Ok so what kind of food plots you gonna plant and for bow or mid to late season. I am gonna do my bird seed plot for early season and a couple of oats and mix of rye grass and winter wheat for mid to late season. Hard part on early season is they dont wanna get off of the acorns.

We are in the piney woods. I need to do some research.

I hunt the piney woods in Starks. I have had good luck with the mix they have at Fletchers....it grows good and they eat it but don't waste too much time and money until you test your soil. You will need lime to get the ph right. It took me 2 seasons before I finally got mine right and once I did it made all the difference in the world to the plot.

I usually plant Labor Day Weekend but I'm skeptical with this lack of rain fall.

I doubt anyone will plant early. I went up to ragley today... Lord we need rain.

Yea....I don't know if my disc will even bust the ground.

New 45-70 next saturday. I'm ready to drop a big boy this year. Think I'm going to deer hunt hard this year.

We tried to disk at our lease in jackson parish two weeks ago,ground is like cement. If we don't get a good rain soon I don't think it will be worth the time or money to plant.

you can always plant rye. it will grow anywhere. you dont even need to plow. deer will eat it after everything else is gone.

Suggestion...... hunt the acorns, forget the food plot.

The Biologist are saying w/ the drought that the acorns will be falling very early this year.

with it being so dry I would just cut the grass short and plant somthing like a mix that don't need to be plowed in, by leaving the grass and not plowing the ground will hold moisture alittle better and then if we start to get some good rain just plow half of the plot under and replant somthing else.

I normally plant cow peas(iron clay peas) winter wheat & winter oats. The cow peas will be good for bow season even with acorns on the ground. For you guys that hunt lots of piney areas......lime lime lime. Piney areas are usually very acidic, lime needs to be cut in way in advance. Main thing is get a soil test & they can recommend how much lime & what type fertilizer to use.

Also I'll disk around the last week or 2 of Sept then watch weather for rain then plant right before a good rain.

Anyone ever planted Okra for deer?
I have heard of planting peas, how do they like them?

We plant 100% Crimson Clover. We have been doing this the past three seasons and have seen more deer in plots than ever before. It is sweet to the deer and is easy to grow. Plus the turkeys love it all the way through the spring. Much cheaper and easy to plant with great results. I'm not planting anything else other than maybe a mustard green patch or too for me and the deer lol

I have been debating also on planting later this year. I have just looked at the 7 day forcast and lots of H2O is in the future for this weekend. Mine is all disked up and ready. Just dont want them to burn up with no water and all this heat.
I am trying this blend that LSU puts out. Its called buck busters. 30% wheat, 30% rye, 30% oats. Has winter peas and several clovers in it. 50# plants a acre.

I'm in a club north of Longville. Anybody else hunts this area?
