Merc Issue

Took my boat in last week before I came offshore because it was losing power when you ran wide open..

They said it was my Air Compressor!!! Did not know I had an air compressor on my motor

Can someone explain this?

Montauk17 06-22-2011 04:48 PM

Air compressor runs the air injectors....the air injectors push air into the fuel injectors and the fuel injectors push fuel into the cylinder.

"W" 06-22-2011 05:08 PM

Roger ...thanks.... I was thinking plugs, bad gas but Air compressor was something I never heard of on a engine! Guess u learn all the time!! Glad I did not just go buy those 25dollar plugs and do it my self....warranty cover it

Montauk17 06-22-2011 05:10 PM

The only thing that can cause it to go out besides a mechanical failure is overheating. The compressor is water cooled. If you ran in some mud or shell it can get trapped in the compressor and burn it up.

weedeater 06-22-2011 05:23 PM

issue is "MERC" just ask 1fastmerc, go get a yamaha:cool:

Sho will probably outrun your boat holmes.

SHO is hands down #1 motor on the market right now

And? Look on the Elite Series Baw. Top motor. Doesn't need to be out for long for people to realize this.

Montauk17 06-22-2011 05:56 PM

I trust the japs aka yamaha more than mexico and china aka mercury.

Dink 06-22-2011 05:59 PM

Tourny boats will run whatever will pay more for placing.....

It it the air compressor that is belt driven on those motors? I've heard of them breaking alot.....carry a spare!!

I agree, the merc obamamax is always in front of a yamaha 4 banger......

However, W consider yourself lucky, hell for what having like 800 hours on the motor not too bad.....

What about a extra belt tensioner? After you change out a few belts that can cause the belt to pop.

The overheating part if my fault, a four hour tow will do that to you. W is too nice of a guy to let me pay his bill on this but he should.

That is cool that he towed you in. Mercury should cover this under warranty, they charged you for it?

Sorry, missed that one.

Before he knew that I offered to pay and he wanted no part of it.

"W" 06-22-2011 06:32 PM

Yea.... Warranty cover it and that's just part of owing a boat,,,, **** Happens

Wide Open 06-22-2011 07:30 PM

W, I tell ya man thats pretty darn kool of ya to come on here and talk about how your having trouble with your Merc. Considering all the Grief you give and get. LOl

On another note if you wanna go fast you put black on the back. If you want a motor to outlast your pickup you put YAMAHAMMER on it. Not saying Mercs are not reliable. Their all good today, some with better feautures some not, but they all break eventually.

Now about the SHO, pretty darn good motors soofar. have heard of 2 power head failures, and one lower unit handgrenaded, but other than that they seem purty darn good. After looking on yamahas website and talking to two diffrient boat builders The SHO may run 1-2 mph faster than the original VMAX, and maybe .5-1.5 better in mpg. The Kicker is they did it in 4stroke fashion and lightened it up some also.
You put it head to head with proXS, And I think many would be dissapointed, but it is a four stroke, and they came a long way!

I have heard the SHO is usually around 1-3 mph faster than the 225 proXS but 1-2 mph slower than the 250 pro xs.

Is there any truth to the rumor that Yam is working on making a 300sho?

Yep they are making a 300 sho....the 300 offshore series is based off the same 4.2 sho block. From what I heard from my dads friend that works for skeeter is they are making a different lower unit for the 300 sho.

I will buy that engine and put it on a Haynie 24HO when it comes out. That should be an amazing ride. 300 Yam on a 24HO right now is at or around 70mph.

would be nice if they did the SHO like PRO XS and make a 115hp up

The 300 sho will not be much different than the 300 offshore. Only real difference is the cowls and the lower unit. They may have something else up there sleeve,we shall see.

Will it have a 20 inch shaft or 25 like the current 300?

The 300 sho will have a 20" shaft. They made these motors for bass boats, but you can run them on bay boats with the right setup.

U don't need no 300 motor for Big Lake....that's just showing off...lol...even if you do make 10 trips offshore!!!! I will keep my Merc for now but my Next Hayine may have a yammy

:shaking: Id be suprised to see the 225 sho faster than the 225 Pro XS, Maybe even The regular Obama Max. Not by much, but possibly.
Reason being I Know of three of the exact same hulls 1 running a VMAX HPDI 225 Running 60mph, another running a 225 Obama Max running 62mph, and another running a VMAX SHO 225 running 60-61mph. And the 225 pro XS has more HP. Now this is one paticular brand of boat some motors act diffrient on diffrient hulls. JMO :)

boatdriver 06-22-2011 08:49 PM

The compressors are probably the most problematic item on the Optimax. They can fail with no warning. But, when they do, you have to change out all 6 plugs, and sometimes, an injector. If you want to keep your compressor from qitting on you, there is way. It requires the lower cowling to be removed. On the port side of the motor, there is a plastic filter that screws into the lower part of the head. This filter, if clogged, will shorten your compressor life span. If you stay out of the shallows, you shouldn't have a problem. Like Montauk stated, shells and grasses can cause the compressor to overheat and fail. It's our biggest problem at the lodge, along with lower units.

Sorry I was talking about the 250sho being faster than a 225 merc. 225 v/s 225 or 250 v/s 250, the Merc still wins.
