I don't think it opens until Saturday. I probably won't get out there til next week.

I'm gonna try to hit it Sunday morning. I haven't been out there in at least 14 years.
The wind is supposed to be kinda high on Sat and Sun.
I assume you can still get in from the Intracoastal?

Jasonf 03-18-2016 07:41 AM

You can run down the intercoastal and go in through that side cut or there is a launch on the south side of the bridge as well.

basinhunterfisher 03-18-2016 08:57 AM

I thought it opened on the 15th but haven't fished it in years
Heard it was starting to get good again since the Hurricanes
Prolly give it a try this year

Lacassine and other refuges open the 15th but Miami Corp fluctuates year to year, generally opening on a Saturday around the 15th. As far as being good, we catch a lot of fish. No where near the size of lacassine fish, but the fishing is good. I love being out there.

T-Boo 03-18-2016 11:15 AM

Is it still better to fish "the front" during the spawn?

Jasonf 03-18-2016 12:36 PM

I don't know. I normally fish wherever I feel like stopping the motor. The front (at least last year) does stay muddier at times, so I run til the water is clear and I gotta start fishing.

cgoods17 03-18-2016 12:54 PM

he is talking about weather.

That makes sense too. I was overthinking it.

basinhunterfisher 03-18-2016 01:09 PM

How's the sacalait fishing?

I had always heard the area south of the Gibbstown Bridge to be called "the front" and the Superior Canal called "the back".
Sorry for any confusion, fellers. :)

T-Boo 03-18-2016 03:18 PM

I don't even remember what I used to throw out there, soft plastic-wise. Seems like it was smaller cotton-candy ring worms. ???
Might have to try the wacky worm, grass permitting...

B-Stealth 03-18-2016 04:26 PM

I used a lot of Weightless Flukes and spinnerbaits.

I hope to be out there tomorrow afternoon. My favorite place to fish for sac-a-lait is in the Superior Canal below Grand Lake. Superior Ditch, north of the Gibstown bridge is also good. Cross over the Intercostal and launch in the front of the Berns is good for chic-a-pin and bass. You can also launch before the Gibstown bridge, run the Intercostal, go into the Burns, hit the Superior Ditch and have some awesome fishing...both in the canal and the marshes that surround it. Good luck and be careful!

X2 Sacalait in Superior, drop jigs in the "holes" spread through the grass beds.

Yea,...been fishing there since my senior year in high school (1978...Go LaGrange Gators!!)...great bass fishing too...lots of luck on beetle spins...(black)...have caught lots of catfish and reds just fishing a dead shrimp off of the bottom where the canals meet the Superior just north of Grand Lake.

prattvan 03-19-2016 08:06 AM

But it cost $$$ to fish in Miami corps, right???

T-Boo 03-19-2016 08:31 AM

Yes. $40/ permit.
And they want you to apply two large permit stickers to your boat and one to your trailer. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...d8ecb0841b.jpg

PEACEKEEPER 03-20-2016 07:12 AM

Where can they be bought!

I was told you have to carry $1,000,000 insurance.

Because of wrecks and death in boating accident.

Deadly D 03-20-2016 11:22 AM

Went yesterday in the 40mph wind and fishing was tuff. Water on the south end(Little Chenier) was stained up and the grass and salvania was horrible. That is the worst opening I have had in the last 5 yrs. It will get better when it clears up some. Don't know what the front looks like I wasn't going to fight it to get there

Jasonf 03-20-2016 02:09 PM

I haven't been out there this year yet but I was thinking the grass was gonna be especially bad since we had such a mild winter and it wouldn't have died back as much. That wind makes even good fishing tough and there is nothing to hide behind.

T-Boo 03-20-2016 08:18 PM

Wind was whipping Sunday. Water looked like the Intracoastal Waterway had invaded. Not quite chocolate milk, but not pretty at all. Salvinia has choked up a major canal east of Superior Canal on the south end.
If we did get a bite, we couldn't tell due to the wind.
Shoulda gone to Lacassine Reserve, apparently.
I'll give it a few weeks and try Miami again.

Jasonf 03-20-2016 11:14 PM

Where did you launch out of? I may try to get out there this week and hopefully find some clearer water.

T-Boo 03-21-2016 05:23 AM

Under the Gibbstown bridge, ran east on Intracoastal.

T-Boo 03-21-2016 06:34 AM

We found some clear water that was basically isolated from the canal but the wind was impressive. They may need to do a little dredging out there in spots.

Back before the hurricanes I use to catch ice chests full there of sacs and goggle eyes. Try the CY canals and Humble too. I would fish the pockets between the grass and the bank. pearl colored tube jigs fished a foot under a tube cork was the ticket back then. I sure miss my 25 hp boat.

That's the problem in that area its all grass out to 5ft from the bank with no pockets. Its horrible this year with no winter

basinhunterfisher 04-15-2016 11:41 AM

superior
