What is a troutmaster?My opinion is a fisherman or woman who can in any situation find and catch trout on artificials.Live bait and dead bait in my opinion dont count towards being a troutmaster cause there is nothing to mastering live or dead bait.Artificials you have to smewhat master.You need to be able to knw lure selection,color and presentaion for each situation.Also,fishing the birds dont count either.Just my definition so whats yalls definition cuz everybodys are different?Who in your opinion is the ultimate troutmaster of louisiana?

I agree with your definition except the part about the live bait. Sure live bait can drastically increase your numbers, but a troutmaster to me is about size of fish not numbers. But I also say it has to be a little bit with numbers because one monster doesnt make you a master either. you need to be able to catch large trout on a consistent basis by doing your homework and knowing how to and where to catch them even if it is using live bait

And fishing birds and live bait while in your "Masters" era to me is like any other angler, not a master. Obviously jeff now guides so that's kinda obsolete for him as of now.

I tend to agree with this. Live bait is a proven big fish tactic that works well when other options don't. To be a master, you have to know when to use what. If its live bait, so be it. A Master, imo, is also being able to consitantly catch large fish.

I mean, a troutmaster could be someone who fishes at night in a offshore boat, a fly fisherman, a wadefisherman, a shrimp drift liner in lake p, etc.....

I would put my SFA partner against anyone on Big Lake. He is really something else when it comes to trout.

Artificial only....

Hands down best artificial fisherman on Big Lake in all categories...fly,numbers,wade,big trout.... Jeff Poe....
There is a long list of great one's on the lake... I could list a bunch... But 90% of them had teachers...someone who showed them a few ropes...

To me Jeff stands out of that crowd

Another thing to considere too is the area thats being fished. You might consistantly catch nice fish to the east of the state,but not ever catch the giant hawgs that are caught on the west side on a regular basis. Some areas just hold bigger fish. Just like v/b there is some big fish there,but a lot of the year the water is so fresh from the basin overflow,that your not gonna consistantly catch big fish year round,no matter if your a troutmaster or not.

That don't count, those are all nate's fish........

What has Jeff ever done tournament wise. Nothing I know of. If your not willing to put it on the line and produce fish when it matters like Eric, Bruce, Phil and Kevin then your just another good fisherman in a long list of good fisherman.

I don't know if jeff ever fished a tournament or not.... Tournaments are not for everyone...Jeff and Mary make all the money they want and have been one of the most successful guide services on the lake.... I don't think you have to chase a tournament trail to be a troutmaster....

Kirk Stansel and Will Drost are the top two on the lake....Kirk is extremely impressive best I have fished with, he knows that estuary very very well-- just my opinion.

Agree with you W, tourny's stress me out with all the boats, rather go with a good friend and stalk some big daddy's. Like fishing them everyonce in a while if it is sounds like a good time not a serious competition, like the trout shoot-out FUN TOURNEY.

So if you only fish when the conditions are right and take hero shots of your stringers when you catch fish you are a troutmaster. The reason most of the Big Lake "Troutmasters" do not fish any tournaments is because they do not want to put there rep on the line. Most of what makes a Big Lake troutmaster is hype and marketing. Like I said, If you can not produce fish when it matters you are just another good fisherman in a long line of good fisherman. But I do have a ton of respect for everyone that has made a living as a guide, to be able to put up with sports and catch fish is something that will always be beyond me.

:amen: I've personally have been blessed with working along La's coast. I'm by no means a great speck fisherman......I caught 5x the trout over 5lbs in big lake than I did in Venice.

No popcorn needed. I'm not going to get in a debate over this. I wish I had the book with me, my buddy has it, but how many 9lbs trout did he catch in one day? hands down the man is good. Sorry he fishes with live bait. But I haven't even seen a 9lbs trout caught on this site(or the other site) with or without live bait since I've been here last year(not saying there hasnt been one, I've only been active here for the last few months but still). give the guy props, he's an old man that knows his area and catches big fish simple as that. I don't see where there is anything to discuss:work:

I think it's because they get sick of the big lake drama + tournament drama

Whats live bait? Oh you mean that stuff they pay .25 for each. Nothing against it I just have rarely used it. As for spec masters I have only met a couple they catch big specs all the time and thats all they target but they release those huge ones. I love big specs nothing like that shake.

He claims to have caught 9 trout that weighed over 80 lbs.............in one day. :eek: First of all, I do not believe that. :shaking: I think that Terry Shaughnessy claiming to have caught over 5,000 8 lb. trout in his lifetime is more realistic. Damn shame he didn't have a camera with him the day of that slaughter 'cause his pics are of 3 lbers. He did, however, show a pic of a couple of 7's he was gettin' ready to clean. :cool: If I were to compile a list of "TroutMasters".......he would not be featured, nor, would anybody else that fished live bait exclusively and kept every fish they caught.

Definatly would be a close race between Jeff, Will and the Stansel brothers.

There are a lot of others that are good but these guys are the elite.

If so you are sadly mistaken......that is two biggest potlicking ****s on the lake!

I understand that live bait fishing can take some mastering, but I'd say a trout MASTER is someone who can go out on any given day and find a consistent bite on artificials and if they wanted big fish they know what and where to fish and they do it.

I haven't met a master yet that i know of, and I don't think all of the "lousianasportsmen troutmasters" are masters either. They just wrote a book. I can write a book on bass fishing in numerous different conditions and techs but I am no master even though i'm usually consistent.

Most of the "troutmasters" in the GI area use live croakers or Pogies to catch their big fish (Terry St Cyr, Bootsie Toups, etc.). They usually come out on top in the big Rodeos and tournaments out of that area. Most of them fish the eastern side of the island all the way to fishing around Venice. They consistently catch big fish and they have a proven record. I consider myself a "Trout Slinger" also. I'll use whatever they are biting on.

I used to fish with a guy named Carl Miller out of Fourchon. They caller him Carl Miller "The Speck Killer." lol He only used live pogies or croakers but favored pogies. And u can say what u want about live bait but we caught Hawgs! Biggest trout I ever caught was with him. My dad and uncles won lots of rodeos with him.
