Shrimping hands

From a friend of my lil sister:

She went cast netting Tuesday, last week.. woke up during the night her hand was hurting. Saw that it was red. By morning Wednesday, it was swollen. Went to Urgent care and they gave her steroid shots and steroid pills Woke up Thursday in terrible pain and her wrist was swelling … She went back to urgent care Thursday morning and they gave her another steroid shot and more pills. By afternoon she was running fever and could not stand the pain. Went to St Pats emergency room (48 hours) the doctors @ St Pats said Steroids are the worst thing it makes the situation worsen. She is now in the hospital.
Yesterday she had to go to the burn center floor to the whirl pool and they scrapped the skin off just like a burn victim and clipped the skin and some of the bacteria off.
Whatever you do, if you or anyone you know catches this bacteria, if you go to your regular physician or an urgent care and they want to give you steroids DO NOT ALLOW THEM TO:
Also, if you have ANY cuts , scratches, and you fish or shrimp or crab… Please be careful… This bacteria is bad..

Pulled several staff(sp?) infections last year when I was crawfishing. My dr asked me if I was shrimpin, crawfishin or crabbin. He said all three carry some nasty stuff but they are all similar and the infections are a color unlike any other staff. He just hit me with antibiotics and I was good. Three times that happened!

They do swell like crazy though! They also turn feverish in a hurry. I guess I was lucky that none of em ever got that far away from me before I was able to get the correct treatment.

CatDaddy 07-01-2010 04:48 PM

Damn....

I think I caught that in my finger once.. It stayed swolen for about 3 weeks, and hurt like hell... I kept digging in it, and cleaning it myself.. it might have not been that particular bacteria, but it was bad.. I almost went to the doctor, and I NEVER go to the Doc!

speckdaddy 07-01-2010 04:50 PM

Man dat akshun

wtretrievers 07-01-2010 04:50 PM

Ray........Is this what they call the flesh eating bacteria? If it is, that some bad stuff, bad as in death if not treated!

Ray 07-01-2010 04:51 PM

I got a few hardhead wounds that did that, but not the whole hand, just the finger.

gasdad 07-01-2010 05:04 PM

Handwashing after shrimping or fishing

Some time back I think I read something about using Clorox diluted approx 25-50 % strength. Put it in a spray bottle and douse your hand with it a few times after crabbing, shrimping, getting finned by a saltwater fish etc. Rinse off after a short time with bottled or fresh water. Antibacterial hand cleanser with an alcohol base is OK also but the bleach may be more effective. As the prvious posted pictures indicate this can be some bad s..t!!!

Raymond 07-01-2010 05:12 PM

They have had 4 confirmed cases of Vibro on the lower Texas coast this summer. 2 have died and 2 made it with enormous hospital bills, bleach is cheap!

Asterisk-Rich 07-01-2010 05:31 PM

Happened to a buddy of mines father...lost one of his fingers!

holy crap that's funny!!

trophytroutman 07-01-2010 07:53 PM

there have been a lot of fishermen died in the past years here in texas from vibrio.

FF_T_Warren 07-01-2010 09:15 PM

yep, some bad stuff. I did a school project on it. Vibrio vulnificus. its the same thing that kills people from eating oysters, but when a cut or ***** from fish, crab, shrimp, etc happens it is a flesh eating bacteria. Definitely bad news. I was scared that I was gonna get it from that hardhead finning I took a few weeks back.

eman 07-01-2010 09:25 PM

we allways carry a jug of bleach and anytime anyone gets a scratch it gets bleached.

FF_T_Warren 07-01-2010 09:27 PM

i gotta start doing the same. I learned after that last trip

Gerald 07-01-2010 09:41 PM

I have been carring a bottle of Hydrogen Peroxid in my boat for a few years.......just in case.

A few ounces of protection can same you months of pain and suffering......not the mention the $$$$$$$$$$.

He was/is an engineer with Stone energy and he was cast netting at south marsh island.

Sea-Trac Offshore 07-01-2010 09:53 PM

Good friend of mine got it on his a foot a couple years back in Lafitte. His plan was to fish 2 days. First day was fine and foot started hurting that night. Next day hurt so bad he could not stand it. He was an er nurse and went in. Almost lost his foot and has multiple surgeries. He was out of work for over a year as he could not walk. Its a very serious bacteria. My wife works at a hand surgical clinic and sees some nasty stuff. She has not seen vibrio in a while but she sees other stuff during the summer from shrimp and such with the heat. She gets so mad at me when I come home from fishing and sees a cut or something.

Just got an email from a buddy in Beaumont Afriend of his got the Vibrio from a shrimp horn poking his finger

vibrio

I was told Hydrogen peroxide will not kill the vibrio virus. bleach is better .
i don't know for sure if anything is 100%

We have the same friend and he can't recall any wound while he was fishing. That means if you have a scrape or cut that it can happen to you.
it is a bactiria that is in the water during the hot months. you don't have to get stuck while fishing or shrimping . You just have to be careful out there.

I am fairly sure I read somewhere that it WILL KILL it.

I would research that again. Actually, I would just go with the bleach.

Micah 07-02-2010 06:35 AM

I seen some pictures of this a few years ago.....the guy's hand was so bad they had to put "relief" cuts in his fingers and the top of his hand. I believe he lost a couple of fingers.....this case was also from shrimping.

If i remember correctly, the article said its worse in warm stagnant water.

"W" 07-02-2010 06:39 AM

Was she in stagnate water or open and lots of tidal movement? Just curious...I stay with cuts on my hands and I'm always in saltwater

Sea-Trac Offshore 07-02-2010 06:43 AM

His said might have gotten started as he had a skeeter bite on his leg and they said the vibrio could have gotten in there. Also, they said hydrogen peroxide is useless against it, need bleach.

When I worked with Seatow after Katrina we carried bleach everyday to be safe. Lots of nasty stuff after that crap

I will find out.

Garfish 07-02-2010 04:11 PM

That Vibrio ain't nuttin to play wit. Get some bleach or an anti-biotic. Gotta watch it esp. this time of year.

LPfishnTIM 07-02-2010 04:40 PM

I heard of a guy dieing after spear fishing around oyster reefs and getting it bad, must be a summer thing.

FF_T_Warren 07-02-2010 04:44 PM

yea, the warmer water allows the bacteria to reproduce faster. therefore theres more of em and it becomes more common during the summer

Just checked my email... i sent this thread to my Dr to see what you could use for protection out on the water...

keep a big bottle of this in your boat....
I contains alcohol and if used right away will kill any kind of bacteria...

It also is good to use after handling Trout...It will take the slim right off your hands and dry them fast( Just found this out)

Every boat should have a bottle of Hand Sanitizer...Saltwater or Fresh...

Word from the wise

Gerald 07-02-2010 05:04 PM

Here is some information that I found searching the web.

The doctors at John Sealy Hospital believe he has Vibrio vulnificus, a bacteria that kills tissues and cells as it spreads, which enters the body through an open wound.
In order to prevent infections after swimming doctors recommended spraying rubbing alcohol on open wounds immediately.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says Vibrio vulnificus is a bacterium in the same family as those that cause cholera which normally lives in warm seawater.
Vibrio vulnificus can cause disease in those who eat contaminated seafood or have an open wound that is exposed to seawater and in healthy people, ingestion of Vibrio vulnificus can cause vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
Particularly vulnerable are those with compromised immune systems and those with chronic liver disease.
Vibrio vulnificus can infect the bloodstream, causing a severe and life-threatening illness characterized by fever and chills, decreased blood pressure (septic shock), and blistering skin lesions.
The CDC says bloodstream infections are fatal in about 50 percent of cases

Here is a link with some good information: http://www.5starstables.com/HarveyWebsite.htm

I found this statement ….. Use alcohol, peroxide or diluted bleach water to clean immediately if a cut or abrasion occurs. Apply a triple antibiotic cream.

Triple antiseptic medicine: bacitracin, neomycin, and polymyxin B

I looked for more information on what exactly is “Triple antiseptic medicine”…..but no luck finding it sofar.

In reading several accounts of people with bad cases of “Flesh eating bacteria”……the common mistake was waiting a day or so to get treatment.

arm

About a month or 2 ago my arm swoll up. It first started with a burning hurt in my right elbow. Next day red and swollen. Went to doc and she sent me to bone and joint clinic. They said it was celulitus. they put me on one antibiotic and 2 days later it was worse .Then they put me on bactrum and stayed on that other antibiotic and it took 2 weeks to clear up. They said it can errode the bone . Now elbow isnt red or swollen but cant lean on itwith all my weight. This happened after a weekend of fishing in leeville before it was shut down. Doc said they see it all the time and its bacteria gets in open wound. That stuff hurt and I dont ever want it again.
