Departed N.O. Airport on Tuesday morning early for Miami, then drove down to Duck Key to meet some friends of ours for the "mini" lobster season which is 2 days (Tues midnight till Thurs 12AM). The wife and I arrived Tues afternoon and jumped on the boat as soon as we got there and headed out for a quick trip. Found some birds working grass patches and got Wendy her first dolphin. We ended up going 5 of 8 on dolphin, all small ones, but it was awesome. Then hit a large school of bait on the way from only 12 miles out and picked up 3 small football blackfin.

We then went out on the flats boat at midnight right behind the house we stayed at and caught some lobster w/ spotlights and nets. Then the next morning we hit them w/ snorkle and fins. Two days on the water = 96 lobster for the total count. I cooked some crawfish and grilled lobster tails w/ jalepeno sausage for supper and layed in the hot tub soaking all the bruises!!! Sitting in Key West right now, getting ready to go tear up Duval St. and get tore up from the floor up!!!

Will post more pics later! Got to go!!

Here is one of Becky and Joe on the bow looking for new holes to bust on day two. The number of boats was incredible, so we went "old school" on looking for new holes where other poeple just passed by! I shot 2 grey grouper, and Becky shot one so it was a really good trip!

FF_T_Warren 07-30-2010 10:16 PM

It is called the "mini-season" since they allow the recreational lobster fisherman to get some before the commercial season opens August 1st. Once the regular season opens, the traps come out by the millions and the lobster get hammered. It would be impossible to obtain your limit of 6 per person once the big season opens, but it can be done, just have to run alot more to get them. We would go to the holes these guys have been hitting for years and marked on the GPS, go down and fine 5-7 lobster in a hole the size of a small lunch cooler. Most of the holes were only 6-10" deep, and the larger lobster will always push the littles ones to the front of the entrance. We had to catch the little ones, gauge them, then release if they did not measure, or put in the catch bag if it was good. Then go back in and "tickle" out the next one!

Finfeatherfur 07-31-2010 09:48 PM

Dink, you dumb coonass!!!!!! The spiny lobster do not have any pinchers!!!! Your manhood wood only get them out by them laughing themselves out of the hole!

Dink 07-31-2010 09:51 PM

You are thinking about Maine Lobsters.
We have lobsters in the GOM.
Or ROV saw a bunch resting on gussets
at the Shell Bullwinkle platform legs.

simplepeddler 08-01-2010 04:49 PM

Man I am jealous of that trip!
WOW that is so darn cool

Finfeatherfur 08-02-2010 10:03 AM

We stayed about a block away from Hawk's Cay Resort and had to pass it everyday when leaving via boat, and then return in front of it again. That place is sweet!!
