Ray 08-04-2010 06:46 PM

Yes. Croakers are clean white meat.
Not sure about one that big though.
I only eat small ones. Fillets look like
tater chips.

Montauk17 08-04-2010 06:58 PM

Croaker are very good to eat. Fry the small ones whole like a bream.

specksNdaSURF 08-04-2010 07:00 PM

bull croaker

simplepeddler 08-04-2010 07:03 PM

Grand dad and his podnas used to catch them.....not quite like that, but big enough to fillet.
Good eating fish.
We have caught a few this summer big enough to keep at the mouth of Manchac pass and P-train......

That is a dang monster though.

Bluechip 08-04-2010 07:42 PM

I bet that fish was a fight....the little ones fight like hell, I can only imagine a big one.

eman 08-04-2010 07:56 PM

They used to call em breakfast croaker. croaker filets w/ eggs and biscuts.

Yep, when the trout aint bighting I go to the Hammock in VB and put on a tiny jig head and a small piece of dead shrimp and its usually all the croaker you feel like cleaning. Last year i got home and took a 20lb. ice back out the boat full of croaker to clean. The wife came over and took a look and said I thought you were going catch specks and reds not bream:redface:.

trophytroutman 08-06-2010 09:22 AM

that should be mounted.

Hebert 08-06-2010 01:39 PM

jgannard 04-03-2012 08:10 PM

Dang that thing is huge, never seen one that big.

T and F fishing 04-03-2012 10:13 PM

Have never seen a croaker that big that's really nice fish...my friend's grandpa and used to catch some around 5 lbs offshore. Another friend's dad used to catch some big ones too offshore all the time

Crawdaddct 04-03-2012 10:40 PM

Caught some real nice ones last weekend, but nothing like that. that's a monster. I caught 8 of them around 15-17 inches.

Garfish 04-04-2012 07:44 AM

That pic was from the Chesapeake Bay area in Virginia if I recall.
I've caught some big ones about 12 -13 inches in the surf the last couple times I've gone to Galveston along w/ some hoss channel mullet/whiting up to 20 inches. They all looked like small reds at first. All of em are great eating.

I agree. Always happy to put croaker in the box. And if they're too small to fillet, then they're about right for bait.

YellowMouth7 04-04-2012 09:01 AM

Dats a big Croak

DUCKGOGETTER 04-04-2012 09:20 AM

I'd mount that big sucker
