Dove hunts

Anyone know of a place in the western part of LA that offers dove hunts that dont require a deposit to hunt?? Possibly someone who has land and dont mind an extra person tagging along ?? Any information is appreciated. We have 40 acres with no birds.

eman 08-17-2010 07:12 PM

Ya got ta do a little work ta get and keep the birds.

Jordan 08-17-2010 07:21 PM

True. I planted sunflowers for about 5 years and it didn't work. I don't wanna bait them in.

Brown top millet;)
also keep about 2 or 3 rows wide disked down the center & keep seed on it all summer till 2 weeks before then disk it under & start cutting the millet or burning sections;):smokin:

I have about 20 acres of "new" (cut in March) cutover with alot of goatweed, started cutting it this past weekend. Have probably 125-150 birds this past w/e. Gonna cut some more in another week. Should have a pretty good shoot come Sept.

I'll shoot the few birds around here.

In Cameron, we just bush hog the goat weed and the Doves will come.
Right after you cut and bail hay they come in too.

I was fishing near west cove and dove after dove flew over for hours. Does any one know who owns the spoil bank along the ship channel?

Ray 08-18-2010 09:15 AM

When I hunted ducks South of Lamberts Bayou, we saw doves flying over all morning.

I don't know where the farm is but in my yard there are about 30 that like to sit on my patio furniture and crap all over it. Jordan, you can come over with a pellet gun and come kill em.

Jordan 08-18-2010 11:07 AM

Here are the fields the LDWF have secured for public dove hunting in Louisiana. There is a $10.00 fee for entry into the fields but I find that
to be very cheap. Jordan, isn't Deridder close to where you live??

The LDWF usually has a field just south of the Paper mill.

They usually don't make the decide on "leasing" the field until a few days before the opener. Check the LDWF web site about Wednesday before the opener.

He is a couple of picture of my back yard.... I just looked out back, and there were 7 doves in this same spot.

No. 8 shot and a loose choke and you'd have yourself a grand slam there!:*****:

I'm ready to get out and get some more of those fuzzy-tailed tree rats!

LDWF usually put on some good hunts, they won't lease the fields unless the birds are there. Have to get there early, they only let so many in on a field, depending on size of course. We've hunted several out towards Amite & Wilmer & limited out just about every we hunted a LDWF field & yes $10 is what they charge per head, cheap but like I just said, you have to get there early around 7am to get on the list, bring you something eat & kick back, they will normally let everone go put their buckets chairs etc out at around 10am then start at noon, the boys used to bring a football & have half the group out there playing.:shaking:

BTW.......the fields locations will be posted in the morning advocate on the Sept 2 Thursday before the season opens.

LaAngler 08-18-2010 01:12 PM

those are whitewings, correct?

specktator 08-18-2010 01:24 PM

They are 2-3x the size of our doves, like shooting a teal. I hunted them in Mexico last year. I couldn't believe how big they were. U would shoot a mourning every once in a while and they looked like sparrows compared to the white wings. We also shot a few blue rock pigeons. That is a beautiful bird. I've never seen white wings around here.

Yep......I only get a few Morning doves now. Severly years ago, the whitwing dove were rare. I have seen a couple of Ringneck doves, but not in the past few years.

Sometimes I could take out ~10 in one shot. The doves almost take over and the Cardinals and Blue Jays can't get to the feeders.

# 40 of bird seed or corn does not last long.

.

Ray 08-18-2010 08:55 PM

Them big ringneck doves took over Cameron before Rita.
No limit during dove season. Big and good eating.

SULPHITE 08-19-2010 09:17 AM

jordan there is a big dove hunt in winnie every year...I forget the guys name...he has a hunting club. I think it was around $80 per person.

I hunted it last year...there was about 80 or so hunters...easy to get your limit though...
