Anybody use their personal vehicle for work?

Doesn anybody here use their personal vehicle for work on a daily basis? I'm not talking about using it to drive back and forth to work, I'm talking about have tools and equipment in their truck and have to go to different locations and actually work out of your personal vehicle.

yak'em-n-stack'em 08-25-2010 02:59 PM

No way I would be driving that much with out getting paid for mileage and gas

I use mine occasionally if I am gonna be in the field and go straight home.

We get $250/month vehicle allowance that is taxed at the end of the year and we get $.43 a mile when driving somewhere. We are arguing with "upper management" that it isn't nearly enough to compensate for the way we use our vehicles.

fun w son 08-25-2010 03:07 PM

our drivers average 180-200 miles a day on there trucks.

yak'em-n-stack'em 08-25-2010 03:09 PM

No that is not near enough for the wear and tear on your truck

RAGINJROB 08-25-2010 03:18 PM

I get $650 month and gas card if that helps

This is something we're shooting for. I would much rather have a flat rate of at least $500 a month plus a gas card to use only when on jobs. It sucks that I have to pay for everything out of pocket then wait on my company to reimburse me when I do my expenses.

LaAngler 08-25-2010 03:28 PM

I won't use mine much for work. I guess it depends on the job description.

I drive to any of the ports from Port of Isabel, TX to Mobile, AL once or twice a week, sometimes more. Take this month for example, these have been my jobs so far...

8/4 - Dulac & Morgan City
8/10 - Venice & Cameron
8/11 - Intracoastal City
8/13 - Leeville
8/18 - Larose, Leeville & Fourchon

Ok, I'm just jumping in here and sorry I'm going to give it to you straight. I am currently on a personal vehicle program where I am paid mileage. I have been in the past where my vehicle was a flat rate of $750/mo plus all fuel. Tires/oil changes/wipers and all the other upkeep came from the $750. At this point, both aspects suck!!!!!!!!!

The IRS has recently dropped the reimbursement schedule to $0.50/mile and our company pays us a rate of $0.75. Thus, I pay taxes on the extra quarter per mile! In the past, I made money on vehicles using them for work. Now, that is no longer the case. I will be going back to a company truck at the first available chance I get.

BTW- How can you be in Venice and Cameron on the same day? As a manager, that sticks out like a sore thumb!

thats bull crap!!! 1ST OFF THE GOVT WRITE OFF IS .55/MILE NOT .43, 250/MO DONT COVER YER GAS AND WEAR N TEAR. JUST FOR AN EXAMPLE I PROBALLY DRIVE 30K MILES A YEAR FOR WORK THAT OVER A 15K WRITE OFF! MY GUYS PULL MY TRAILERS , DRIVE OTHER WORKERS AROUND WHO DONT HAVE CARS ECT.. I FILL THEM UP W/ GAS OR DESIEL EVERY WEEK OR WHEN EVER THEY ASK I KNOW ALL THE GAS I PAY FOR DOSNT GET USED FOR WORK BUT IT SURE BEATS ME HAVING TO GO OUT AND BUY 5 4X4 TRUCKS AND LET THEM DESTROY THEM PLUS THEY ARE 1099 SO THEY CAN WRITE ALL THOSE MILES OFF AT THE END OF THE YEAR . I TAKE CARE OF MY GUYS I WOULD HAVE NOTHING W/O THEM OR THEIR TRUCKS. WHAT KND OF WORK DO YOU DO? I WOULD NOT USE MY TRUCK UNLESS THEY WERE GIVING ME .55/MILE AND PAYING FOR OIL CHANGES ECT... TELL EM TO GET LOST OR GO BUY SOME FLEET TRUCKS

I left my house at 5 AM and drove to Venice to look at how a captain mounted a satellite antenna, I left Venice at 11 AM and was told I needed to go straight to Cameron for a job. I got to Cameron around 7 PM, changed a satellite phone and was on my way home around 8, got home around 10:30 PM.

This I gotta see!!!!!!!! lol!

Just had to yank you chain man!!!!! But really, the wife who is my CPA had a crap load of pissed off people for the reduction, but it is what it is!!!!! IRS has no clue what it takes to run a business or "work" for a living. I'm getting my blood pressure up over this topic, I mean come on - has anyone seen the federal tax code lately? Really, so we need a 4000 page document for income taxes? Why do I have to pay taxes on my income, and then pay taxes on items I purchase, but Jamal gets SSI and does not pay taxes for his purchases that he buys w/ tax money....... Just don't get it!

all star rod 08-26-2010 01:07 PM

I use my truck for work. I am in sales so I do not carry tools. I usually drive 30K miles a year. I am given 12K per year (paid over 26 pay checks) plus they pay all my fuel. Which to me, is great vehicle allowance. However, I pay for all repairs, oil changes, and etc. Also, as a tax write-off (my wife is an accountant) just say I travel 25K for work out of the 30K, I can write off those miles (.50cents per mile this year) minus the money my company gives me for my gas. I have done this for the past 5 years. call me if you need any additional info.

PUREBAY2200 08-26-2010 04:52 PM

I drive about 40k miles a year.
Last 2 years it's been $$$$ with gas.
I know my biggest deduction is mileage.
I don't get any $ for gas, or vehicle expense.
I don't complain cause I'm glad to have a job and I enjoy what I do. I knew going into my career that I would b paying all my expenses. I get bonus' and an expense allowance based on production, but that changes ever three months based on my previous rolling 12 months.
Some times that $$ covers my gas/ maintenance/ etc some times it don't.
But if I worked somewhere that took away my gas/vehicle $$ or reduced it... I'll start pooping on bags and throwing it at mgmt!!

One of my friends used his brand new truck for 2 years and after that he was upside down . had allmost 100k miles and only 2 years old. stillowed 3 years on the truck and couldn't get crap for it w/ excessive miles.

jlsch1 08-28-2010 11:01 AM

Sucks being in sales my company paid me $650 plus gas which I averaged 32,000 miles a year. Now my description has changed and drive alot less with the same company. I get paid $880 per month gas and vehicle. No matter what they claim with the vehicle requirements unless you find a good used vehicle you will never come out ahead of the game when trade vehicle in. I ate $7k trading my last truck when I bought my new truck last year. Luckly my truck note was low enough to have the cash to pay that at time of trade.

Use to have company vehicles which they changed out every 3 years. They use to let our spouses drive our vehicles when we were off. This idiot let his wife drive a company vehicle drunk and she killed 2 people. The company that I work for got sued and their insurance dropped our fleet policy.
