need some help on lighting

i am building a house and i have cathedral ceiling in my living room....well i was going to put recessed lights in 4 places and a ceiling fan on the beam...well i was told i shouldn't do the recessed lights on the side close to my roof cause if they ever went out i wouldn't be able to get to them cause of crawl space......so what do yall recommend. i want 4 lights just don't know what to do. do the can lights go out very often or is there something else i should put that would look good on these angled cielings?:help:

Contact the People at Notoco.....they have a place in Baton Rouge.
Keep in mind incandescent lighting will be drummed out by 2014.

If I was building today, I would be looking at LED.

You may even get a tax break to do so.
Ask for the LEED specialist at any place you look to.
Lighting is a hot topic right now

I do not recomend can lights,
I have installed them in cathedral celings and also have charged $65 an hr to change the bulbs in them
I would recomend building a shelf all the way around the room at ceiling height
and lining it w/ 4 and 8 foot flourescents pointing upwards.
Or hang the lights from rods at a level where you can change the bulbs.

My ceilings arent that high i can change bulbs off a ladder....wow 65 an hour light bulb changer yall highering...lol

fishinpox 01-06-2011 07:43 PM

i dont see how it would be any diffrent than installing a can light on a 1st story ceiling of a 2 story house ...... are your rafters goin to be your ceiliong?? or is a secondary drop ceiling being framed ????

I have cathedral ceilings and have recessed can lights with flouresnt low wattage spots in them....been up there for three years and haven't had to change one yet, but when one goes out, the ladder will have to come out.

The standard rate right now is 60 -65 / hr and one hr minimum.
i have had to get a genie lift to change bulbs in can lights at 26 feet cause some wife thought it was neat to have high celings.
that was a 3 hr job because of the furniture and having to lay plywood down to roll the lift on. So 3 times $65 + the cost of the lift add 10%

so there will be no issue of insulation causing the can to overheat since its secondary .... you wont have any problems . as for cheap wire if you can find the S.O.B. that keeps stealin wire and copper pipes off my jobs you can probally trade some crack for it :work:

short story on this....i put up a gov speced fence job and had to ground it every 500' well we put it down and the inspector called the next day and said why is your copper wire here but not your ground rod......the dumba$$es took the ground rods that are just copper coated and left that thick copper wire....i bet they were pissed when they found out they wasn't worth anything. they worked them things was 8' in the ground

toodeep 01-10-2011 05:16 PM

can lights

if you ever have a wire nut come off. most can lights have a way (3screws) that you can remove and pull the can itself down and access the junction box on the fixture to check the wire nuts. the make poles that extend that you can grab a light 15 to 18 feet from ground.on a seperate note the only thing is if you put can lights above a ceiling fan you will get a stobe look. hope it helps
