Diesel injectors
Anybody had injectors changed on their diesel?
I just took my truck to the dealership, it's a 5.9L Cummins & they are telling me all 6 injectors need changing at a cost of $5300.00!!!!! Yea you heard me!!! $5300!!!!! I liked to have fell out my chair! Here's the deal, it had a 100k mile warranty at 50k they changed 2, at 80k they changed 2 more at 96k they said I have 4 bad but would change all 6 before my warranty ran out, it now has 130k & they are saying all 6 are bad! WTH???? That would be 16 injectors in a 130k miles! I personally think they're full of #%^*! Where ya at Capt D? Had any of yours changed? Or anybody else? That price sound right? |
U can order aftermarket ones. A lot cheeper and will fix ur problem
Also get a shadetree mechanic. To do. It Sent from my Milestone XT720 |
That is the price you pay when owning a diesel............I know it sucks but it is a common cost for diesels. I used to work as a technician at a chevy dealership, and this is a common problem with ALL Diesels. As a diesel owner, you need to be very picky about where you get your diesel from. Poor diesel quality is the main cause for costly diesel repairs. Now getting aftermarket injectors is fine, but I DO NOT recommend getting a shade-tree mechanics to do it.

My dad has a set of banks injectors from his old truck. Let me know if your interested.
|
What year. The newer ones are way more expensive then the older dodge diesels. The older ones are not hard to change. Don't know about the newer ones.
|
I'm thinking it's the injector pump or return fuel line, it loses prime after sitting a day or 2. Once it cranks runs like the day I bought it. It's an '06

Bay slayer, where would you recommend getting diesel from, i mean what stations? |
Not murphy

First I would start off with the newest stations that you can find. The tanks are cleanest and they usually have better upkeep and standards. After that..........it kind of trial and error............I never owned a diesel, but after working on diesels and having conversations with diesel customers, the best and most popular place to buy diesel around here was at the Chevron stations. But to tell you the truth, any brand of diesel coming from the "factory" are all about equal in quality. The diesel usually get dirty in the gas stations tanks...........and if you see a tanker truck filling the tanks......AVOID IT LIKE A PLAGUE!!!!! Reason being, The filling process stirs up all the debris in the tanks and it needs time to settle back to the bottom. Also DO NOT fill up your truck with "Tax-free" (red) diesel. Not only is it the dirtiest diesel you can find, but it will void your warranty (if you are still covered). Hope this helps |

Thanks alot buddy!!! I own a 08 gmc 2500 duramax, and i like my truck, so all the little tips i can get of keeping it in the best shape helps. Even the little things ya know! |
"Red" and clear are the same diesel so why would the "Off Road" diesel be dirty?? If that were the case, how many farmers would be pumping it into their $200,000 combines and tractors????? Red diesel runs great in trucks until the Feds catch you and then it becomes very Xpensive!

There are lots of cummins owners websites. You get good info on them......ill ask my dad which one he is always on instead of working and let you know......

I used to run it in my 98 Cummins all the time. The company I worked for at the time kept plenty of it and didn't mind us pulling a tank a week. It was great but, I also never got my tank dipped by DOT either! |
My Ford has over 200K on it, no issues except for recalls.
I ran Shell diesel when I lived in Cameron, that was all they had down there. Now I run Murphy diesel from Sams for the past 10 years or so. No issues. There is a diesel injector rebuild shop on Enterprise. I have sent a Ford tractor injector pump to them. My brother in law has a used Chevy diesel, injectors went bad. The changed the engine out for $1000 dollars more than it costs for changing the injectors and pump. Now he got warranty. |
There is a diesel injector shop in Opelousas called JL Heberts and the can get them for you at a fraction of the cost of the dealership. Now all you have to do is find a competent mechanic to install them. My 07 dodge has 256000 miles on it pulling a 40 gn trailer and I have had zero injector problems. Most of your truckstops sell good fuel because they move so much of it.

Well here's the verdict.....brought truck to another mechanic 30+ years experience, trash in the full pump not allowing fuel line to prime quick enough (trouble starting only after it's set up a day or 2) new fuel pump, several fuel pressure test & a couple other odds & ins & were back in business for $865, dealership told me all 6 injecters were bad at a price of $5300! They weren't even close to the problem!!!! Bastards!!!!
Oh & he did strongly recommend using an additive, prefers Lucus or the stuff Baton Rouge industries carries, now gotta find time to go to the dealership & give them a freaking earful! If I wouldn't have had a lil bit of mechanical knowledge they would have screwed out of $5300 & still not have fixed the problem! I knew it was not priming & told them that but I guess I'm the dumbazz???? |

yeah, I've diagnosed things on my truck using a code reader and going to truck forums and found out that some of my problems were very common, A mechanic told me he does that often and uses a car repair program called ALLDATA.

Guys, it's not only in the mechanic business. The collision industry is filled to the brim with parts changers today. That is one aspect we thrive on is that we know how to FIX metal when others do not.
Finding help for our growth time is very difficult. If you've seen my work, you know my standards. With that said, I've done it from a small pos shop to date and am finally moving up to the "big time". What I'm saying is, when you pass by that little hole in the wall for the big shop, you may well be passing the best shop in town! Your local dealer is typically a joke on the mechanical and collision side. Just my .02 |
i have had dodge and cummins for going on 30 years weather it was in a pump or a truck. never had a problem with red fuel when they came out with it. with the injectors. but the clear fuel and the new red is dry. Had a presser pump go out with the new "dry fuel" add lucas or a querter of a qrt. of auto tranny fulid to the tank to keep the seels in the pump from drying up. If you buy fuel bulk like i do theres a gallon of ???(cant rember the name) but it treats 600 gallons at a time. 08' and newer dont!! and dont try and run red fuel in them. not good at all!!!! learend that the hard way with a late 07'/08'
