GULP!?

I like to use the gulp! shrimp when I am working shorelines for reds and flounder, BUT, I can't use them for more than 1 or 2 bites because they tear so easily. I rig them on a regular lead head, any of you guys have the same problem? Has anyone figured out a way to rig them or do you use a special jig head that doesn't tear them up so easily? $5 for 8 shrimp that will last me 50 casts, I might as well get the real thing. (W I do use eels most of the time.)

The Salty Hog 07-18-2009 10:54 AM

I have the same problem Killa K, I haven't found anything yet to stop it from happening. Your lucky if you catch two fish without having to replace em'. But, they do produce, just at a $$$$ that sucks....

bigdog 07-18-2009 11:09 AM

I like fishing with A gulp shrimp on a shrimpaler 2 hook. The shrimp doesn't slide off the hook. i have also used super glue to glue the tip after pushing the shrimp on the hook.:grinpimp:

Sounds good, I'll have to try that, thanks for the tip.

Dink 07-18-2009 12:22 PM

I use flutter hooks.................same concept, but it doesn't have the bend near the eye........I've torn my bait trying to get it over that type hook..............Tim

The Salty Hog 07-18-2009 01:41 PM

What do they look like Tim?

MulletBreath 07-18-2009 01:46 PM

all the gulp shrimp you'll ever need are absolutely free....just take a dive to the bottom of lambert/grandbayou weirs and you can take em off of rocks by the handful!

DO NOT throw them away when they tear!!!! put em back in the bucket.
You can take scissors and cut the head off and reuse . Or gut them into pieces and use them to tip your plastics.

Gulp

I think Berkley makes a water proof bait glue that you can put on the top of your hook then slide your bait up the hook. It dries quick and is supposed to be really strong. This will help prevent the bait from sliding down your hook everytime you cast after you catch a couple fish.

I know berkley makes some, but I think other companies make some also.

txrebel62 07-18-2009 02:53 PM

screwlock jigheads and super glue. and don't bite them off they taste bad!

"W" 07-18-2009 05:45 PM

I think gulp are way overrated!! They are awesome for redfish but just 2 high dollar like you said for that one or two bite......I have found the white ones are the toughest of all colors!! Don't know why but they lasted longer than any of them I ever used!!

killa k 07-18-2009 05:48 PM

I like the idea of using the busted ones to tip jigs with. That may work well when the bite is slow..

Pends on whose throwin' it................ You'll be able to read about it the 2nd week in August. I'll have Fontknow throwin' that Prism Bomber. ;)

B-Stealth 07-18-2009 10:06 PM

High Tide Jig Heads, kinda pricey but they hold your baits on real tight, and they will not bend.

In order to have a "3lb avg"....you have to have fish that are at least 3 lbs. Find another pic..........this one FAILED!!!!!!!!!! :)

And.......is this the best you've ever done? I've caught a total of 7 trout outta Big Lake and they weighed as much as those. :)

Nope....I was just curious what he avg weight was that day.....Back in 95 or 96 my Dad and I had 25 over 4lbs

Ray 07-19-2009 02:31 PM

It was tough catching big fish in the gill net days. I lived in Cameron for 35 years and
I saw the fishing going down and down and down. I had a lot of friends gill netting
that told me that it wasn't their nets. I kinda believed them until about 2 or 3 years
after the ban. The Redfish and Flounder started getting bigger and bigger and the
Specks started getting a lot more plentiful.
Now it is easier to find fish, but finding a stringer like that is not. I don't have
the patience to fish and fish and fish until I had a mess like that. After 4 or 5 like
big'ns, I would be heading in to heat up the grease.

"W" 07-19-2009 02:54 PM

Ray....I never hardly keep any fish over 4lbs but this day it was unreal with big trout!!! I could of keep 25 but didn't need 25.....I saw s trout chasing a shrimp between crab traps and stoped and started fishing them.....all the trout were caught on a line of crab traps.....

all star rod 07-19-2009 03:23 PM

When I use them I mostly use the 4" gulp in the new penny. Never had any success with the other colors.

I'd love to bring home a stringer like that, but like I said, I get too excited
when I get on big ones, one after the other. I am a meat fisherman. I
clean and eat almost anything I catch, except for big Reds and trash fish.
I can eat Trout and Redfish every day. But I'd rather clean the Trout than
to clean the Redfish. And I like to eat fresh fish more than frozen.

Ducktrickster 07-19-2009 08:47 PM

Good jigheads (I prefer Norton) and a little Crazy Glue and any bait will last twice as long.

Salty 07-19-2009 09:23 PM

I never seem to have a problem with the bait sliding down the hook. :smokin:

Bait Glue

This stuff works well on gulp or plastics: http://www.prosoftbaitglue.com/

The applicator tip is a little tricky, but it does the job.
