Marsh or Timber

For duck hunting what do you guys prefer...marsh or timber?

Jordan 07-22-2009 09:44 AM

I hunt timber for woodies

longsidelandry 07-22-2009 09:49 AM

I love marsh hunting, I've never been on a timber hunt though.

Jordan 07-22-2009 09:55 AM

i'd trade a wood duck hunt in timber for a marsh hunt !!!

adamsfence 07-22-2009 09:58 AM

for sure flooded timber or open water.... only made a few marsh hunts on public property and that is way to much work walking through that stuff

longsidelandry 07-22-2009 09:59 AM

We go to Shell Island opening weekend every year, you're more than welcome to come along. Usually leave Friday afternoon and come back Sunday. Other than that, we make day trips out there a few times a year and I tag along with friends the rest of the season. I don't have a lease or property so I gotta go with other people but I can probably line something up.

Two completely different experiences....I like them both cause either way i'm duck hunting so i'm happy

huntin fool 07-22-2009 10:08 AM

lets see..gunna try the actual timber hunting this year...(hope its not private land where i want to hunt...) going to be hunting ponds/creeks in timber on my deer lease...hunted marsh last year alots of ducks, the walk doesn't bother me.

i prefer timber area though..hard ground,easier to walk :)

exactly... it sucked for me but my buddy is pretty big. it was horrible for him.

doford33 07-22-2009 10:15 AM

bellpepperhead,do you hunt the timber area in north la,or around where you live? Let me know and maybe we can switch a hunt out....have a camp and farm in klondike la..good speck hunting but ducks where slow last year... I have always wanted to hunt the timber!!!!give me a shout

longsidelandry 07-22-2009 10:18 AM

doford, you go deer hunting often? I've never been on a goose hunt and have always wanted to, I would be interested in swapping a deer hunt for a goose hunt if you're interested.

Jordan 07-22-2009 10:21 AM

i'd be interested in swapping a duck hunt on a creek for a deer/duck/hog hunt anywhere else i'll do a 3to1 hunt... 3 hunts from me for 1 hunt from anyone else..

longsidelandry 07-22-2009 10:24 AM

Same here, I can promise a deer/hog hunt swap for a duck hunt. Jfranovich, let me know if you are interested. I hunt in a lease in Franklinton, La. We have some nice decent deer and kill a few hogs every now and then.

Jordan 07-22-2009 10:29 AM

shoot me a PM... its a guaranteed limit on woodies here where i hunt, its only 2, but its fun, bring no calls... just gun and shells !!!

thought they changed the limit to 3?

yup i just walk clean across the mud in swamp/marsh, rather timber/creeks since i drive my fourwheeler to da spot, and i can wade the whole pond without sinking

Marsh

Marsh without a doubt. I have hunted timber before and enjoyed it, but something about sitting in the marsh is just a lot more enjoyable for myself. In my few hunts in the timber, it seemed as though we shot very few "trash" ducks. One advantage to the timber. But I love the mudboat rides and watching the greys cupped up and sailing into the decoys, so the marsh is where I call my home.

Love the marsh, have a lease southeast of Heberts Landing. Doford33 maybe we can exchange a morning marsh hunt/afternoon ricefield hunt for a flooded timber hunt up north with some of these guys, what do you think? Anybody interested?

all star rod 07-22-2009 06:05 PM

Marsh any day of the week. That is really the only place in South LA to kill ducks day in and day out....Especially Pecan Island.

The Shep 07-22-2009 06:55 PM

down here in gueydan we hunt the marsh...my dad an i own 40 acres that we hunt

southern151 07-22-2009 09:24 PM

Love the marsh! Got a beautiful pintail off of Wax last year(He's on the wall now!). I'd never seen any place where the sky turned black with birds prior to going there. I do have to say that the speed of bustin woodies is pretty dang cool though. They come in FAST and you better be on top of your game or, they'll be on top of you and gone before you know it!

huntin fool 07-22-2009 11:02 PM

only time now that i will be hunting "marsh" is when my cousin takes me ( 1-3 times a season) to lacassine. other then that, its gunna be a timber/river hunting for me this year!

too bad i got kicked out the lil burns..:(

BellPepperHead 07-27-2009 09:06 AM

DoFord I hunt in Avoyelles Parish, where exactly are you located? Anyway it is timber for me all the way...nothing like greenheads back flapping in a lil' hole in the woods...
