Big Lake Trip -Top Water Extravaganza

1 Attachment(s)
Went Fishing with my dad and Kirk Stancel of HR&G this morning. We threw nothing but top water all morning polishing off a limit of trout and a few reds. All fish were solid, and we released two more around 6#'s. Kirk broke off on one that was a true trophy...

Fished the south end of west cove throwing topwaters. Never had to change baits, we fished the same 400 yard area picking up 4-8 fish everydrift. Then Kirk hooked up to a monster 30inch fish we estimated, and it broke him off on the shelf. Big fish in the lake now--

My dad caught a huge stingray also, my first ever seen on the lake, so watch out if wading...

There were not boiling the water, but they were consistent all day..
Slow walking them spooks-----------------------------click clack boom!!

Yea I had a ruff one too last night too went to sleep at 2:30 woke up at 4:30 . I slept through my alarm blaring for 30 minutes, and woke up to my dad shaking me trying to drag me away from the beaver!!! I cracked a cold one at sun up and it was a life saver!!

Nothing like catching on top water...I bet it was a blast.

Finfeatherfur 07-26-2009 07:15 PM

I had my 3 oldest kids, the oldest 14, all throwing topwater this weekend. WE wade fished Coon Point surf, and Whiskey Island Saturday and caught some hammers! Largest went 20.75 inches, but we didn't weigh it. We finished with 31 trout Saturday, but we had 100 blow-ups! I would rather catch 30 trout on topwater then 130 on live bait!

Now all my kids want to throw topwater everytime, but they get fatigued easily. It is addictive!

Nice catch EBS- sorry, didn't mean to hijack your thread, just get a chubby with the topwater stuff!

all star rod 07-26-2009 07:21 PM

FFF... I would rather catch 1 on artifical compared to 10 on live. I hate that LIVE STUFF....Which they would outlaw it....I know certin times of the years and places it is somewhat needed.....but some fish it all year round. When I hear someone talk about catching fish and they mention they use live bait I automatically get in mute mode for the rest of the conservation!

speckdaddy 07-26-2009 07:56 PM

beautiful fish.great mess of them topwater yella moufs

killa k 07-26-2009 08:01 PM

Is there going to be another youtube video? I love to watch fish busting topwater, especially when they're attached to my line.

cmdrost 07-27-2009 08:59 AM

Nice trip! we had a good trip Friday all on topwater as well. Saw 2 stingrays! No wading this time of year.

wtretrievers 07-27-2009 09:25 AM

Nice fish Mike, I bout blow a head gasket when they bust topwater! If I had only one bait it would it would be top. Super spook or skitter walk

exspeck big specks 07-27-2009 06:34 PM

I throw a spook. I have two different one's I have had for a while. My favorite spook, had caught several 7's ( I put a slit in the side for everyone) just cracked on the bottom. It kind of sinks a little, messed up. But wtreivers-spook, spook, spook, catch bigger trout..

Austin(boatman's son) 07-27-2009 06:38 PM

haha spooks are da bomb!!!!!!!!!!!

Salty 07-27-2009 08:19 PM

Bruce, D, and myself will be bustin' 'em in 2 weeks. Can't wait. :shaking:

Salty Good luck to ya'll boys show them how it is done--

I saw a boat run straight across the old jetty's Sunday... It was bad... We saw it coming from a mile away, but he was too far to be signiled. We were about to go see if they were alright when he started moving away, CRAZY! Can not believe he hit those submerged rocks and did not loose his lower unit. Had to atleast messed his prop up..

Specks I have seen it more than once especialy where they have what looks to be a brake in them. They just cant find the little gap there.

Salty 07-27-2009 09:25 PM

Is this "Old Jetty" kinda out in the middle of the lake running north and south?

Thanks Mike. You sure could make things easier if you'd give up a couple of them spots. Better yet....we'll just follow you. :smokin: I promise I won't even throw a topwater. :shaking:

right handed is the only way to go on baitcasters and left on spinning

Gerald 07-27-2009 09:45 PM

I got "educated" on those under water rocks when I first started fishing Big Lake. I thought I could just drift over them while fishing and quckly raised the engin when it hit the first rock.

baitcaster I only use haybaler on bad windy days when I have to fish.

Choupique 07-28-2009 09:02 AM

I wish I started on left handed baitcasters...

i wish i would learn how to pitch/flipp left handed (left handed reel) aswell....

exspeck big specks 07-28-2009 11:29 PM

I enjoy baitcasters but I just can not throw as far with them. When I am wading during winter months I use them to finese fish, with grubs extremely slow. I prefer my Shimano Spin cast for offshore fishing. Laced with 80lb. braid and a 100lb. fluorocarbon leader. Hard to beat that rig for throwing topwaters for Tuna or jigging for Ling..

It's kinda on the south end of the lake running east and west. Just north of the East Fork(old river) East of the ship channel, West of Grand Bayou and Lambert Bayou.

drjay 07-29-2009 06:37 PM

Old Jetties (GPS)

29°50'37.40"N 93°18'15.36"W ..........put that into google maps and it will put you dead center. They kinda' run at an angle. Yeah........I have to admit that I've sacrificed a prop to them. Talk about ruin a fishing trip.

Nasty 07-29-2009 08:09 PM

Old Jetties east end: 29*50.95 N; 93*17.93 W
Old Jetties west end: 29*50.664 N; 93*19.585 W

The old jetties run between those two coordinates.

I don't know how to put the degree sign so I used the asterick in its place.
