Theft at High School
My Daughter(16) had her phone stolen by the staff of Georgetwon High School .
I dont give a damn what policy is, policy is NOT LAW!!! I work nights and am a single father and my daughter has to walk home from school and her phone is her only source of protection. Furthermore it is a computer and she does her papers on it and downloads them to the computers at school. I guarantee she will NEVER give her phone to another CROOKED CORRUPT SCHOOL TEACHER OR PRINCIPAL again. I can see taking a phone from a child if being used in class, but this was certainly not the case and I will be filing THEFT charges against the teacher, the principal and the school board. Last time I checked we were still in AMERICA and not RUSSIA OR CHINA!!! Communism has to be stopped... I would like to thank the GRANT PARISH SCHOOL BOARD , PRINCIPAL OF GEORGETOWN HIGH SCHOOL AND THE TEACHER THAT IS TEACHING OUR CHILDREN THAT STEALING IS "OK" IF ITS POLICY. WHAT A BIG STINKING LOAD OF CHICKEN POOP!!! |
report the phone lost or stolen...if stolen they will need a police report...have them shut the phone off, and put a flag on the ESN number... basically voids the phone from use on the carrier's network

Umm I would prob go to jail for kicking some ***. That's some bs.
|
How did the teacher know she had it or how did it wind up in her hands?
|
Nope. You signed a paper upon enrollment that verified that you understand the policies of the school board. No need to blow a gasket. Follow the rules that you agreed to or go somewhere else. I can assure you that there are few schools that allow phones on campus. If you were not informed of the policy, file charges. Either way, Good luck.
|
I hate to say it but ducktrickster your correct....
|
Jeff just went through this and was told the same thing about signing the policy. Police wouldn't go for the theft report either. Believe me...Jeff blew a gasket plus some but in the end, the school still has the phone. :(

A few years ago my son who goes to MBS in BR had his high dollar YO-YO taken away.....Teacher gave it back to him after a week or so. He ask if I thought he would get it back and I told him YES only if her son does not like...:*****: Hes was a PISS off 8 year old. However, he got it back but he should of not brought it to school in the first place per the rules.
Really nothing you can do as far dealing with the police on getting it back (btw, i did not go to them). I am sure if you BIOTCH enough they will give it back! |
Nope ASR....Jeff had them on speed dial and called several folks on a daily basis to beeeotch. Didn't work. He ended getting sons number activated on a spare phone and shut that one off.
|
I had Central High take my sons phone. He was texting during recess, got caught. They told me I could come get it but they would not give it back to him. I drove and picked it up. No problem. Gotta follow the rules. Some schools allow you to bring them to school as long as they don't use them. I think they are being azzzes to not give it to you. I wouldn't have to get ugly. My wife would, and I promise she would get it back. LOL

The problem here is clearly poor parenting. One of the worst problems we have in our schools is cell phone usage during school hours. I do not know of a school district that does not have a clear set of rules for students to follow regarding cell phone usage during school hours. Instead of explaining the circumstances of your daughter's phone being confiscated, you rant about a teacher stealing her phone? Something is clearly very wrong with your point of view Sir. I've never met a teacher that confiscated things because they enjoyed it, nor have I ever known any who took things up for their own personal use. What you need to do is take a deep breath and open your mind up to the probability that the blame lies with your daughter for using her phone in an unauthorized manner.
Yes, this might feel like a slap in the face, but it sounds to me like you need it. I'm sure you are a good parent, and doing it alone is never easy. But to blame the school district, etc. for confiscating the device when your daughter clearly disobeyed the rules makes you just plain wrong. Nobody's perfect and we learn as we go. Unfortunately you'll have to go to school and pick it up, perhaps even pay a fine. My school district charges $15 per offense and the parent has to pick it up. Yes, you are supposed to be upset. Yes, it's supposed to inconvenience you. But you're supposed to be upset with your daughter, not the school district. She is to blame and she inconvenienced you. This is a perfect opportunity to teach your daughter something that our society has forgotten; personal responsibility for your own actions. |
I'm gonna assume this wasn't a random search. I carried a pager in school...yes, I'm that old and, there was a policy against then but, I never had it out so, it never got taken.
I would have to say that in order for her to have lost it to a teacher, she had it visible. If they suddenly don't know where it went, that is a different story. As far as rules being rules, I'm glad they can still enforce a few of them! |
My son and daughter went to MBS in baton rouge. I moved to French settlement and they go there now. MBS is a joke. Worst teachers and principles. It was a waste of tuition money. But it keep my kids from the democrats so to say. Gotta do what u gotta do.

well said!!!! |
I still say this is bs. My niece is 8. She has a phone to call her parents if something happens. She was kicked out of class for coughing. She was not aloud to call home from the office. She does not have that problem anymore.
|
Can't wait for my buddy from texas to chime in on this one!!!!
|
Ok Gents, I read each and every post and I appreciate the replies both in support and the "negative" coments.
As for me needing a slap in the face(coachlaw) I believe I am a grown man and I recognize the value of your comments...however, this child was NOT in class and understand this child holds the HIGHEST gpa at this school and is in each and every concievable club and is an athlete to boot. I work nights and she does ride the bus to school, but because of the activities she is involved in she is forced to walk home 99% of the time. The issue here is SAFETY and her CIVIL RIGHTS are being violated by refusing to give the phone back. I have a 15yo niece in the same parish but different school that had a teacher PHYSICALLY reach into her pocket and remove her phone, which was powered off, and this was witnessed by 6 students and 3 other teachers and a parent. They refused to return the phone in the same manner. IS THAT NOT THEFT? I have spoken to other teachers and the coaches at this school and they all agreed that the policy isnt right, especially when you have kids that are in extra-curricular activities. Are they better than the other students? Absolutely not...but they choose to excel above the rest and attempt to better themselves and YOUR DAMN RIGHT THEY SHOULD BE TREATED DIFFERENTLY!!! They sacrifice a lot to be in the clubs and sports and I am sure many of you on here did exactly the same when you were in school and were treated somewhat differently. If you say nay to this then I say you are a LIAR!! I was a scholar student and athlete and I was treated differently, but I was also asked to do many many extra things for the teachers, office staff, principal, and the coaches in addition to having to do my own homework and keep my grades up. AS I STATED ABOVE THIS BOILS DOWN TO SIMPLE PETTY THEFT AND TODAY I CHARGED THE TEACHER , PRINCIPAL, AND THE SCHOOL BOARD WITH JUST THAT. I probably wont get any satisfaction, but I will be heard in the next school board meeting. The only way I will back down is if the principal apologizes and returns the PERSONAL PROPERTY THAT WAS STOLEN!!! OR DID I WAKE UP ON COMMUNIST CHINA TODAY???? |
Bob....you were right to equestrian the popcorn
|
Er, request
|
I worked at an oil refinery once which naturally had a no gun policy for the process workers that drove directly to their unit. We were allowed to check in our gun at the guard shack before our shift and check out after. My point is ,why can't they have something like a safety deposit box of sorts where they could leave their phone during school hours and get when they leave?
|
you signed a policy stating that cell phones arent allowed on campus.
does this make it right that they cant have them? no. I think there is a time and a place, and it a student isnt using his/her phone or has it out then it shouldnt be a problem however, its still policy. she obviously wasnt hiding it well enough. when i worked as a contract worker in the plants, if we were caught with a phone with a camera on it, we would be permanently kicked out of the plant and they could confiscate it. so we either didnt bring our phones or left them in the glove box of the truck ON SILENT, until we were outside of the gate. my school had the same policy when i was in HS, we would get them taken if caught. if you are smart about it, or just plain dont use it during school you were fine. coachlaw never said you needed to be lapped in the face, he simply stated that you may feel like it is a slap in the face. |
I'm curious as to how the school knew the kid had a phone? If it's just for emergencies it should have been out of sight in a backpack. If you know it's against the rules to have a cell phone and you're going to have one anyway keeping it hid is the thing to do.
|
yak you are right and apologies to coachlaw for the error I made.
I now get a letter from the Principal, delivered by the Chief of Police, basically stating that I am stirring up trouble and I need to desist. YUP IM IN COMMUNIST CHINA NOW!!! |

Did she have the phone out during class or at a time when it is not allowed. If not then there is a valid arguement. Its when the black and white becomes grey is why we have awesome lawyers who sue the piss out of companies for bs and force companies overseas...just my .2 |
The reason the phone was out was because she had an eye infection and had requested to use the phone in the office and was turned away, this was during class time. She waited till lunch and went to the gym and got the phone out of her softball bag where it stays until practice daily. She then texted me that her eye was worse and she was in pain. The teacher simply took the phone out of her hand...thus I charged her with theft of personal property.
Those reading this take note...we all know our kids have phones. The last class(block) of the day is used for softball practice and I have been there a couple times for practice and have seen the coach tell the kids to get on their phones and text something to their friends/families about the days game or upcoming game. So to think that they dont know they have them is folly. The principal has a problem with me now and is sending threatening letters via the town Chief of Police and will in no way back down. Its now becoming very funny and stupid all at the same time. I stated above that she will in no way allow anyone to take her phone again. |
sulphite...if I had the money I would definitely sue this school and school board.
I have already talked to a lawyer that told me that due to the safety issue her civil rights are being abused and we would win in court...but what we would win would not cover attorneys fees so wat do you do? Just sit back and take it and allow the principal to throw sand on it at the same time. |

So are you able to get the phone back? That is the part I could not figure out.
|
mosslake...that was my biggest complaint and spoke to the office about that and was told that the phone lines were being worked on at the time she went to the office. I dont think she was told that.
tumbleweed...the phone will be held for 14 days. |
I would bet that one of the office workers carry a cell phone with them that should have been offered to use. Or is it against policy for them also. Either way, I'm sure they have their's with them.
|
now we have the grey area...the use of an office phone denied without an appropriate alternative
|
Man I wished I could offer something constructive.
But, you are pissing in the wind, period. period, period. My son was taken off in handcuffs at 13 because a little over achiever, cheeleader, athelete, school board members niece accused him of having a gun in his back pack. So I don't think ANY child should be treated different, but they should ALL be treated with respect. While I understand coaches points about parents, I can also give you a laundry list going back to "goals 2000" from 1996 that show the puclic schools act many times as they only want parents involved when it does not infringe on the sub culture I call "public school tenure" The problems in on both fronts. I can tell you that MANY teachers would be on thier asses in the public sector for poor performance. What we have effectively done is employ to the least common denominator and educate to the least common denominator. So we are roaring into mediocrity at break neck speed on both sides. Excellent teachers and excellent students are both watered down and brow beat to oblivian while the under acheiving, excuse making folks on both sides are made to feel "Special" I am sorry, everyone does not get a trophy. At the end of the day, kids should be taught the ONE way to be successful instead of the 10,000 excuses not to be successful. and it's stupid wide painted rules like this this that perpetuate to our young kids that all adults are morons. |

14 days?!?!? That is ridiculous. You are a parent and the person that pays the bill on that phone. Phones are too expensive these days to not be using them. As the parent you should be responsible for the punishment: they call you, you go pick up the phone and they tell you what happened, then you decide on the next course of action concerning your daughter. Teachers dont teach any lessons in class, so why teach a lesson about cell phones? |

From all the info I've seen on here there seems to be an issue with common sense on the teacher's part. This situation was definitely one of those that can be considered an emergency, especially if she could not use a phone in the principal's office. Hey, I'm a teacher.
I know that my students have phones and I make it completely clear that there is a district policy and also My policy that if it is "used" or it is out during class, that I can confiscate it. The district makes them pay 15 dollar$ and it has to be a parent or legal guardian that has to pick it up on Thursdays only. I know that in some cases they use them to cheat on tests, text their friends at school, play on Facebook, etc....I also know that there are many students that have them for safety reasons such as being in a single parent household, and a lot of my students have parents that work more than one job and they have to care for their younger siblings and/or take care of them after school. Also there have been cases where my immigrant students use a translator app on their phone to help them understand something better. I usually use restraint and pick my battles when it comes to this. Usually a stern warning is all that it takes from me. My baseball players have theirs after school at practice and I tell them all the time that it can be taken if they use them or have them out during school hours. Sounds like a fight that will be hard to win because of the black and white of the rule itself. The situation there is really gray. |
back in highschool, my friend would go use the bathrooom and use his cell phone to call the school's office. he would then tell them that I am not felling good, and needs to be checked out, in which they would agree.(This is the tricky part but we never got caught somehow) He would then tell them that I have a car, and will be leaving campus driving my own car.) somehow they let...and when i get out to the car, i call the office, and repeat the process...
BUT cell phones are a great tool also, because it's a learning tool(if a smartphone) imagine if you had GOOGLE in your pocket when you was in highs school ....or how about when something like COLUMBINE OR VA TECH happens, tell me cell phones didn't help in ANY school shooting.!!! |
I really don't understand the 14 day thing ...... what is the purpose of that???
|
I understand both sides of this equation. Your phone should be returned plain and simple. But you and your daughter should understand the reason for action. Should it have been taken? That has not been answered. There are rules applied here that are as a safety precaution. And I have read you are concerned for her safety. The good are suffering for the bad here. I think things are already pushed to a level of stupidity. The rules are in place for protection without prejudice. Just because she is a great student it can not be ignored. If you punch someone then you take your lick and suffer the price. What did we do before we had cell phones? Good luck and I hope you don't look trust in your school.

Gents, I graduated from this school. It is a very small school in a very small town in north Louisiana. I brought my daughter from a 5A behemoth of a school in San Antonio , Texas where she had grown up most of her life. I would not want my child or any other to go to a gang infested school like that where the teachers and staff are no better than the gangs. The reason I say this is that my child was bullied and put down because she was very smart as were most of the other kids she hung around with. The teen pregnancy rate at that school would astound you.
So after my divorce I moved back to Louisiana and my daughter chose to live with me and she wanted to go to a small school where she could feel safer and continue her progression. So I could live just about anywhere because I am a nurse, but she told me she wanted to live in my home town for church...family...and school. Now I am regretting coming here and not just due to this ...She has no future here. She will have to move to a big city and be back in that rat race again and this time she will be on her own. Maybe in some small way this will be a lesson to her to both be descreet and to never ever under any circumstances give up your phone to anyone. in answer to one of the posts...Salty Cajun court wouldnt settle the case...lol I had the chief of police here charge the teacher, the principal, and the school board with theft and withholding private property. I know it will go nowhere, but when I speak before the School Board with the petition that already as of 11 am today has 455 signatures, my voice and the other parents and voting members of this community will be heard. |

Ok..Heres the policy at my High School.
If you are caught texting in class or school, it is taken, and parents must come get it. If you have it on school campus, it must be stowed away and turned off.. And to be honest everyone's phone is hanging out of there pocket and the teachers don't mind as long as your not texting. |

Hang in there brother......your daughter is lucky to have you! Policy and procedures should never over rule common sense. |
Thanks Peddler...
I am trying not to lose my religion here...I am gna sit back for a couple days and see if the charges filed do any good. |
