Morganza Spillway

Jindal just announced the opening within the next 24 hours. Why 1 will close at 10am and remain closed for 4-8 hours. If you or any family in the way of this water my prayers are with you.

This is sad. I feel for the families and businesses in the path of disaster. Very unfortunate.

mcjaredsandwich 05-13-2011 06:06 PM

It is a very unfortunate event. Prayers to those who will be affected.

Although this is a tragedy, it's an event nature must have; it's how it cleanses itself and allows for new growth. Same principle as wildfires and prescription burning. Nature is cleaning the slate and starting over.

mikedatiger 05-13-2011 06:08 PM

my uncle is evacuating now and we have long time friends in that area. Definitely praying for everyone!

Montauk17 05-13-2011 06:09 PM

Not good! I know several people that live and have camps in the path, lets pray it does not get too bad.

Micah 05-13-2011 06:23 PM

Forgive my ignorance, but where is all this water coming from?

Snow melting?

W, I live in this area and you are right. If the levee's were not there and the water was allowed to spread out across the land we would hardly notice it.

Your education level on this subject is low!!! Read up and do some leg work and you will find very educational documents on how BR could flood!!!!

I was referring to your post, I think #14. that is the dumbest logic I have ever heard! Yep, our states Capitol. Also, one if the most densly populated areas in the state! To open or not to open has nothing
to do with the govenor's mansion! It has to do with where the main populous(that means the most people) dwells!

I was acting like the government way of thinking....you know sarcastic,,,,

Salty 05-13-2011 09:56 PM

Sarcasm is definitely not one of your traits.

Even if a hurricane came up the mississippi river and it somehow magically was able to keep cat 5 status this far from the coast. Baton rouge still would not flood from the mississippi river. I'll let you figure out why it won't happen. It's really easy.

When I get to my computer I will lay out a map and documents of when and where BR could flood... I'm not talking about New Orleans flooding I'm talking about sections of BR. I read a three page report from the corp two days ago on this!!! I believe they know more than EMaN

Will"E"Fish 05-13-2011 10:31 PM

One of my relatives lives in Morganza and swears to be dammed that he's going to wait it out.Fool told me he's got his 24 ft Champion tied to the second floor balcony of his home .Fool say's he gonna wait till water get's to the second level of his home then he's drive it till it run's a ground toward's the west. You'll pray for this fool please, and all those that will be affected by this tragedy which will soon un fold right here in our own backyard's.

Bluechip 05-13-2011 10:35 PM

I hope your relative is safe but I feel his pain. There is nothing worse than leaving your home......for good.:(

DUCKGOGETTER 05-13-2011 10:40 PM

I watched my father-n-law after he lost everything to rita. It's very sad to watch somebody you love or know go through this.

This is soooooo out of the realm of possibility......it doesn't even warrant discussion. In the past 40 years or so, only 2 hurricanes have made US landfall as a Category 5. Those are the only ones I remember but I think there was another one about 100 years ago. Contrary to popular belief.....Hurricane Rita was nowhere near a Cat 5. The possibilities of Baton Rouge flooding from a hurricane are probably less than with a tsunami.

BellPepperHead 05-13-2011 11:52 PM

W you are by far the dumbest person I have ever encountered in my life, be it real life or the internet. You have no idea what is actually going on. You dismiss a 100 year flood like nothing is going to happen. I could give a shat about what Corp report you have read over the past few days, your thinking is so off base it doesn't even warrant an arguement.

Salty 05-14-2011 12:32 AM

"Chances of Category 4 or 5 hurricanes hitting Gulf location are .03 percent annually." - Louisiana State University

If the chance is only .03% for the Gulf coast........then the possibility for as far inland as Baton Rouge is non-existent.

eman 05-14-2011 05:26 AM

Please forward me a copy of this report from the COE on how baton rouge will flood from a Cat 5 hurricane. Will make some interesting reading when i have to exercise my recto -optic nerve.

joshdomingue 05-14-2011 10:09 AM

That said on the news they are opening Morganza to save Baton Rouge and New Orleans

I remember when he posted on LAS that he had a degree in "petrolium" engineering. Something sounded out of line...even back then. At one time I actually thought he controlled the flow of oil from the Gulf.

I'm pretty sure baton rouge has adequate drainage canals and none of them go in to the mississippi, all lead east to bayou manchac or the amite river. as long as the levee holds up we don't have any worries!

pretty sure that if you live in south la, you live behind a levee.

Montauk17 05-14-2011 01:35 PM

Just saw on the news that they will be opening one bay of the spillway today.

southern151 05-14-2011 01:43 PM

Talked with some friends up that way this morning and yeah, they're gonna open it up today. Two guys I've worked with for years have homes directly in the path of the spillway.
