Speck fishing rod?

Need advice on purchasing a rod for speck fishing. More than brand I was wondering length and action. Thanks

Hopedale Hustler 05-28-2011 09:50 AM

Waterpooo......no castaway skeleton or falcon or American rodsmith

Hopedale Hustler 05-28-2011 09:50 AM

Can't go wrong with them three

PUREBAY2200 05-28-2011 09:54 AM

6-6 or 7ft
What feels best to u.
6-12 or 8-14
For reds 8-17
Hope that helps.
For the price bucoo is the best option.
It's a 8-17 but feels like an 8 -14.
Very good action & versatile.

fishinpox 05-28-2011 10:11 AM

7 ft light or med/light fast tip soft plastic 1/8-1/4 oz jig heads I prefer the falcon cenderi ti

TTF FISHING 05-28-2011 10:28 AM

If you plan to throw Tops/Tails at em....I'd go with a Med Fast or Med Light Extra Fast in 6'9" - 7'0.

MED FAST 7'0 ...... (MED) will give you the fighting power on the bottom of the 1/2 of your blank and the (FAST) whip to work lure on the top 1/2 of the blank.

If you wade and boat fish ...go with a 6'9" MED LIGHT EXTRA FAST....Best Tops/Tails Rod Action on the Market!!!!!!

Good Luck .... TTF

evis102 05-28-2011 12:30 PM

I wade with a 6'5" Med Fast Shimano Cumulus and boat fish with 6'8" Shimano Cumaras. I have tried every high end rod on the market except G.Loomis rods and I go back to Cumaras every time. Also the reason I use a short rod for wading is it gives you better control of the fish.

LaAngler 05-28-2011 12:49 PM

for throwing heavy baits a 6'-6" medium action

for jigs a medium light to light action 6'-6" to 7'

"W" 05-28-2011 12:52 PM

HP Light Waterloo....6"10

trophytroutman 05-28-2011 12:53 PM

When I wade I use 6'5" L or ML.When fishing from boat a 7' L or ML.

all star rod 05-28-2011 12:53 PM

For 100 bucks you cannot beat the Falcon BU COO......either the 6'-6" or 7'...

Yeah...If all you(1FastMerc) really do is wade...go with a 6'5" - 6'9" in ML Xtra Fast, Med/Fast or a Med Light "Wader" Style Rod.

If you Wade and Boat ...6'9" MLXF is best

If you only boat fish.... 7' and 7'6" Med Fast .... 7' and above Rods give you more casting distance for fishing the birds and you'll able to cast way out in front of the boat while drifting.....Just make sure your line is spooled full on your reel.

Now this advice is if you're only buying 1 rod...if buying more than one rod then you can cherry pick lengths and actions.

Also give a price range...cause you're gonna get people suggesting 200-350 dollar rods on here.....You can find some great rods for 119.00 and below.

fishinpox 05-28-2011 01:02 PM

Top water 6'6" med/ heavy 7" split grip custom built .... That's the money right thuuuuur

PUREBAY2200 05-28-2011 07:28 PM

I also use a short rod wade Fishin...
6-5 skeleton 8-17lb
6-4 skeleton 8-14lb
6-2 skeleton 6-12
6-6 falcon low rider 10-12

Boat Fishin
7 ft skeleton 8-14
7 ft skeleton 8-17
6-9 bucoo 8-17
7-2 cumara 10-20

Spinning
7-6 falcon inshore 8-15
7 ft skeleton 8-17

Each rod has a specific job:)

But if I needed 1 rod only.....7ft 8-14 skeleton

kenmore_mo 05-28-2011 07:37 PM

OK here's my take on this, name brand rods are nice but pricey. as long as you get a graphite rod at med action you are fine....been fishing for for 40 years..yes its nice to tell your buds that you use an all star or a g lomis save your money and buy beer

evidrine 05-28-2011 07:42 PM

Nicely stated!

Salty 05-28-2011 11:27 PM

Falcon....unless you have more money than brains.

Exactly

I agree with Pox and ASR. A long rod with a split grip is the way to go. And for the price the Bu Coo's are hard to beat.

LPfishnTIM 05-29-2011 02:04 AM

7ft cast farther! I like a med rod, no fast tip. American rodsmith has a good trout rod, but it doesn't have many guides, which I like plenty guides. but the trout special rod I have I've caught several limits with.

weedeater 05-29-2011 06:07 AM

what about the abu rods, veritas or vendetta and such

specktator 05-29-2011 08:07 AM

I don't like anything longer than 6'6"

bass rods... I wouldn't use them for Salt... Just my view.. I just got done fishing with one and I hated it.. however, I can vouch that the revo inshore is a bad arse reel... But my shimano's will still outcast it ;)

jchief 05-29-2011 08:51 AM

I kinda agree. I have used some bass rods saltwater fishing and they corroded up. So be careful what type of hardware they have.

Does the Bucoo have stainless guides?

"W" 05-29-2011 09:32 AM

Also....these guys are speaking about casting farther which is correct about a 7ft rod....but your reel is just as important when getting a true all a round speck rod.
A Shimano Curado 200E7 is the best and most saltwater tolerance reel for the money! So which every rod you pick , I would place a Curado on it!

Hopedale Hustler 05-29-2011 09:36 AM

Curado fasho

catch.and.fillet 05-29-2011 09:38 AM

Curado on sale today at Academy for $139. Brand new.

Yeh. I'm actually real good friends with his cousin, Cody Fortier. We grew up together. Been offshore fishing with Kyle a few times. He's a good dude. He knows how to catch them Yellowfins too. We caught some monsters year before last. And I caught a 300lb blue marlin. Him and Cody have a camp in Fourchon.

ya he does know that..me and his lil bro are really tight...good people there...and that invincible they got is prolly in my top 3 favorite boats ive ever had the pleasure to be aboard..and deff a dream boat.

IF your looking for an all around rod, the Castaway SMCL7-X in the XP3 series has a 5 yr warranty. Love mine. Its made here in Texas . Not a china model.

I also fish a Skeet Reese signature series spinner bait/worm 7' rod. Its $89 and a lifetime warranty. It's a carbon fiber rod. I LOVVVEEE It. SO light I can cast all day , I have a new curado 200 E with 12# flourocarbon Abrax X line. I've caught 30-33" reds a the rock with that set up. You can get that rod at Country Station in Broussard.

LaAngler 05-29-2011 02:29 PM

with a spook, mirrolure, or corky and a high end reel a shorter rod will cast just as far, and can be a little lighter to twitch all day

trophytroutman 05-29-2011 02:55 PM

Was a die hard American Rodsmith guy but now nothing but Stick-em rods.Great rods for whole lot less.If anyone is interested in Stick-ems let me know.

If u go with Cody, hold on. He drives that big "ship" like he stole it. One time we were going 74 mph in 2-4s. Hahaha

Xpress21 05-30-2011 01:06 PM

Quantum 7' SPECKS and REDS Light action is SWEET and wont be buying anything else EVER. Don't forget to pair it with a Curado.
