Replica Vs. Fish mount

Hey guys,
I am relatively new to the forum. Much more informative than any others I have been to. I have fished Big Lake for 15 years with friends and in my duck boat, but finally bought my first bay boat in February. I am really trying to get serious about learning this fishery and I learn more and more everytime I go. Read Trout Masters cover to cover. I have become addicted to catching big trout on top. I have good trips then the lake humbles me the next time out. I have caught about 10 6lbders and 1 7lber. Question- If I do catch a 8lb plus trout I would certainly like to mount it. How do the mounts compare? I assume for a replica you measure length, weight, and girth. Anything else needed? I would sure like to release the big girl, but just wanted get some opinions on the topic before I catch her.

Get the Skin mount 100%.....If you catch a trout or bass that is worth putting on the wall....keep the fish....

Pic are not great...took in my garage..

Top Dawg 06-06-2011 11:55 AM

I was wondering the same thing. I have caught several 7+ trout one 9.5. But I was really thinkin bout gettin a replica for the memory of the trout that won me the money. It wasn't the biggest I've caught but certainly the most memorable. I have the length measurement but I didn't get the girth. Was a pretty skinny fish though. Long and slim.

I agree!

Nice mount "W"

Sent from my EVO

Super Spook 06-06-2011 12:35 PM

Nice mount! Who did that? German? When doing a skin mount do you just wrap it in a garbage bag and stick in the freezer or is there a better way of preserving it?

fishinpox 06-06-2011 12:38 PM

Skin mount fo sho.... Can get pricey but worth the $ IMO . Only replica I'd get would be a big blue water fish that would be a ton of $ for skin mount

fishinpox 06-06-2011 12:42 PM

As soon a u catch fish wrap it in yer shirt b4 throwin it in the ice chest to protect it from scratching ect... Once I get home wash it with cold water all over even inside the mouth , my guy says to then make sure all fins r flat n not bent and wrap it in a wet beach towel then wrap it in visceen n tape put into a deep freeze if not mounting right away

"W" 06-06-2011 12:49 PM

I bought mine to German still in the live well....lol

cmdrost 06-06-2011 01:01 PM

replica's look better and hold up better over time IMHO. Lots of pics help. A good taxidermist can look at the pics and get really close if you have just weight and length.

Unfortunately I don't have any pics at all. It went straight to the livewell to the weigh in. Never got a pic

Ill Have to disagree on that......He is a few Picks of a Replica...I have seen two up close and to me it looks too fake..Like a kids toy....
These two were placed in the top 3 in a taxidermy replica contest....In my eyes still looks too fake

Super Spook 06-06-2011 01:38 PM

Those look bad, especially the top one!!!! No yellow around the mouth. Your skin mount blow those away.

RatherBFishin 06-06-2011 02:00 PM

Replicas are too perfect. The imperfections in a skin mount are what give a fish character. You can buy replicas online all day long. You will never catch that trophy fish again. Skin mount all the way! No matter what kind of fish.

BossHog 06-06-2011 02:41 PM

Get a skin mount looks way better....if u want a fake fish go to toys-r-us

Its just a photoshop Pic...but you get the idea....trout coming out of the water hitting a topwater... He will have to cut the fish in half...

Hopedale Hustler 06-06-2011 06:58 PM

they do it with ducks all the time.....looks really cool......looks like glass but i have no idea.

outcast 06-06-2011 07:02 PM

You wouldnt have to cut in half. You could replicate the water with plexiglass. Make the fish come through the glass

Super Spook 06-06-2011 07:50 PM

Stringer mounts are awesome, but I wouldn't mount a 5bler though. I would like to see that table mount as well.

Salty Brother

Allen "Chink" Sumas (picture to left), one of the kings of Seabrook, has fished the lakefront for the last 50 years.
"Seabrook has always had big fish," states Chink. "You can catch big fish all year long."
The opening of shrimp season in May signals the beginning of some great fishing. Fishing usually is best in July but last until late August. Chink adds that November and December can be great but the shrimp season really produces the best catches.
Almost every morning finds Chink pulling a trawl to catch shrimp and croakers. After about an hour of work with the net, 15 to 25 count shrimp become bait for large five-pound trout. A few occasional eight pounders are added to the ice chest.

Hopedale Hustler 06-06-2011 08:55 PM

He don't catch them no more I can tell ya....that place is deserted besides Vietnam people and *****s...I swear I fished there last summer and caught a oyster fish a ribbon fish a buzz and a plastic tarp

one of the cooler trout mounts I've seen:

http://www.2coolfishing.com/ttmbforu...1&d=1262218542
This is a skin mount for the record.......

ETA - I've got a relative with a stringer mount of trout 6 to 9 lbs and you can't tell which ones are replicas and which ones are skin mounts. Also, my grandfathers old mounts from our camp look like crap now.....whereas the replicas don't fade.
