Costa's

I went to Academy and looked at the tortise Harpoon's with 580 amber lens. I will use them for fishing and also as sun glasses and driveing, anyone have these or atleast these lenses and whats the differance in the 400 and 580 and does anyone know why there is a pair thats $250 when others are around $150-$200

redroaster 06-08-2011 09:21 AM

580 is better polarized and clear

its worth the extra money for the 580 lens. it blocks out rays a little better and is more clear. harpoons are awesome and fit great! good choice

specktator 06-08-2011 09:27 AM

I have never owned 580s but ppl that do say there is a big difference b/w them in clarity. 580s are about $50 more/pair.

meaux fishing 06-08-2011 09:31 AM

look for em on ebay... they are waaaaay cheaper

cmdrost 06-08-2011 09:36 AM

several factors. 580 is better/more expensive lens. Also is lens glass or plastic?

I own the 580's and think they are worth it.

X2. I just got some trip tails w/ 580 blues for 150 shipped and they came in two days. Brand new not used or refurbed

longcast 06-08-2011 10:30 AM

Def go with 580. You will not regret it.

longsidelandry 06-08-2011 10:43 AM

I got the 580's and will never get any of the others again, only 580's from here on out. Had a buddy call me up the other day and said "Man I should have listened to you 2 years ago, these 580 lenses are the ****!".

Montauk17 06-08-2011 12:21 PM

Check ebay for sure. I bought some 580 blackfins for 160 shipped. I have owned several pairs over the years and the 580s are the bomb. Its like HD vision

Bluechip 06-08-2011 12:33 PM

Do they have different frame sizes or one size fits all?

Academy has alot of frames to chose from or just try on

jescuriex 06-08-2011 01:24 PM

THE Harpoons are a Medium/Large Frame. the 580 lens blocks out the yellow light where the 400 don't you so it makes a big difference outside in the store you won't see a difference. The wave 400 blue mirror and green mirror lens are glass the rest of the lens are poly. They now make a poly 580 lens that sells for the same price of a wave 400 glass lens.

jescuriex 06-08-2011 01:26 PM

The Costa Del MAR site has the sizes on the diffrent frames

Total Dominationilization 06-08-2011 01:27 PM

I'm in the market for my third pair of Costas right now. The best way I have found to make sure you get the right pair is to go to Academy, etc., try on some of the frames you are interested in, then go to the website and get the exact frames and lenses you want ( the selection on frame colors and lens tint are much better on the site). I have the Brines right now, but I tried on the Mayas and the Riomars the other day and liked them both.

Make sure you don't get the intergal hinge frames. I have two pair of fathoms with intergal hinges and one pair of harpoons with the metal hinge. The metal hinge system does not stretch out like the intergal system does, makes them more comfortable all day. 580 copper lens in the harpoons and love them.

boatdriver 06-08-2011 06:00 PM

I can't tell the difference between the 580 & 400 lenses at all.

Same here. A few weeks ago I bought a pair of Harpoons, green mirror 400s at Cabelas and I could not tell the difference vs the 580 I tried on. BTW, I had a pair of triple tail 400 black frame green mirror that was scratched. Well i sent them back and for 48 bucks I got a new pair. So now I have two. If anyone is interested in buying the TT let me know if not I will keep them as a back-up.

weedeater 06-11-2011 07:55 PM

Ok got another question. I went today and looked and when I tried the Harpoons they don't fit but the Triple Tails did and i really like them. I am gona get the tortoise frames but should I get copper or amber lenses?

Sea-Trac Offshore 06-11-2011 08:26 PM

I have always liked the Harpoon with blue 580. Everyone says the blue is for offshore but I have really been happy with it in the marsh

Not everyone can tell a difference. The 580s aren't for everyone. The best way to decide is to go outside and look around with the same color lense in each and see if you can tell a difference. If you can't, there's no reason to spend the extra. I'm as happy as can be with my 400 blue mirror Tags.

All depends on how much glare you can handle in the situation you are using them for. I got the blue mirror for max effect because I am on the road alot staring at the sunlight beaming off the back of the car in front of me.

BaseballFisherman 06-12-2011 12:03 AM

I have 4 pairs of costas, 2 with 400 lenses and 2 with 580 lenses. I wear the 400s around town and while driving bc they are lighter and more comfortable. I wear the 580s fishing bc they block out more yellow light than the 400s. Yellow light is what causes glare. So essentially, the 580s give you crisper vision and allow you to see things better when looking into the water by cutting light glare. I fish big lake multiple times per week and I have found that the green mirror 580 lenses are the best match for the color of water we are blessed with in swla. Blue mirror is great for clear, blue water offshore. Copper and Amber color lenses are great for rainy or cloudy/grey/overcast conditions because they seem to make the environment brighter. I recommend getting the 580 lenses. You won't notice much difference between the 400 and 580 lenses driving in the car, but on the water the difference is dramatic. Get you some 580s - they are worth the extra cost.
