Fishing line

What kind of fishing line are you guys using in the surf? What is the ideal test?

Feesherman 06-09-2011 06:57 AM

Depends on what you're fishin for.

Total Dominationilization 06-09-2011 07:08 AM

I just recently got hooked on the Power Pro braid, 20 lb test. I had used Fire Line in the past, but didn't really care for it, but this Power Pro has the diameter of 8lb test Mono and it doesn't kink up. I would definitely recommend it...especially if you want to cast 100 yards!

x2 - really got hooked on this line and use it for every type of fishing.

evidrine 06-09-2011 07:48 AM

Thats what I've been hearing. Thanks for the input.

jescuriex 06-09-2011 07:54 AM

Power pro 20# are 30# with a mono leader

Dink 06-09-2011 08:09 AM

Do a search on this site.....been discussed many times

Samaurai braid all the way!

bsoileau 06-09-2011 08:35 AM

I use 15 lb big game and I have never had a problem with it. I know there are others out there, i just dont want to change if nothing wrong has happened yet.

fishfinder 06-09-2011 08:39 AM

I use a bamboo pole and hay twine, works every time!!

RAGINJROB 06-09-2011 08:41 AM

Why tie on a leader w/ braid? Wouldn't that just defeat the purpose? or have an extra know to break?

Hopedale Hustler 06-09-2011 08:42 AM

Braided nylon is the best thing to use in the surf on bigger rods...

LOL! You remind me of those "Don't be that guy" commercials!

evidrine 06-09-2011 08:58 AM

Picked up a 9ftr the other day for my Penn baitcaster. Need to string it up! Have some 30lb mono, but I know theres better out there for a bigger pole.

Feesherman 06-09-2011 09:39 AM

There is no one line for every application. I would never dream of fishing braid with top water plugs for trout. No stretch = hooks ripped out of mouths. I use mono for top water. I like that it stretches and it doesn't sink. Perfect application for topwater. Jig fishing for trout, with sand eels or trout killers or whatever, I use flurocarbon. Abrasion resistant on oysters and very little stretch. I have braid on one rod and that is my flounder fishing rod. No need to re-tie with braid and flounder teeth. No stretch for good hook sets in a flounder's hard mouth.

Good advice. Thanks!

X2 right on! I use Sufix elite mono on top, Seaguar inviz-x fluorocarbon for about everything else. i only use braid if i have to.. i usually reserve it for very specific situations or conditions... not that there's anything wrong with braided lines, lots of people love them, myself included... i just prefer other lines if conditions permit.

Exactly. Braid seems to be made for flounder fishing. I don't use it for anything else. This is the very specific situation in where I will use it. I only have it on one rod.

15 lb. Big Game works like a charm.

If you're pulling hooks, your drag is too tight or you're trying to horse them in. The only increases I have seen by using braid are increased feel and deeper hooksets.

Even with TW? I find it easier to work a TW bait with mono than braid... I do use suffix braid w/ a fluro leader for almost everything else though

tcglsu 06-10-2011 09:48 AM

P-line 15lb test here

flounder_smacker 06-10-2011 10:17 AM

Y'all must be using hollow line cause my mono sinks way faster than braid. I use 20lb powerpro for top and 12lb pline for everything else.

think thats my route from now on too...

your gonna laugh but I've had good success with cajun line 12lb...

I like pline flouro/mono mix but it kept breaking on me during casts??? Montauk mentioned that the reel spray I use may be causing it to turn brittle...

swithced to cajun line and have liked it...it holds up good and doesn't have bad memory

Yes really. I must not be a serious trout fisherman. I do, however, know how to set my drag!

Montauk17 06-10-2011 10:37 AM

I use sufix 832 for single hook lures. Topwater or suspending baits I use good ole stren original. I prefer the extra stretch with mono for treble hook lures.

Maybe 100 yards is a slight exaggeration, but i can cast it about 20% further than mono with my Citica and Curado.

jchief 06-10-2011 06:56 PM

12 lb big game. Using it for years. For freshwater jigs/carolina I use braided. Not saltwater.

yeah i sprayed reel magic on the pline last year and it made it brittle and broke a lot. after a few break offs i look at the can and in little red letters it says no fluorocarbons.

FYI...... Academy has the 1/4 lb spools of Berkley Big Game fishing line on sale this week for.... $ 3.99.

I had a buddy say the exact same thing.. I told him to tie on a she dog. He threw it as far as he could. I tied on a rebel POP R, the medium series. Weighs a fraction of a she dog.

My 7ft bucoo\ citica with 10 lb mono, can outcast his braid. And he's no rookie in the world of fishing.

Regardless, everyone has opinions and preferences, but I stick to mono. I had one rod with 60 lb braid for jigs and frogs. And thats all.

Thanks Gerald, going pick up some right now. I don't use braid anymore. We use either PLine or Trilene 10-15lb test. 12lb test on specks with a 15lb leader off the cork. 15 all the way on reds. 10lb on bass.

Montauk17 06-12-2011 06:46 PM

10lb for bass? Yall must not have any underwater snags, fishing in the basin I use a min of 14lb. In the real thick stuff up to 20lb.

Kenner18 06-12-2011 06:52 PM

I used Big Game 15 lb for years but switched to Yo zuri hybrid a few years ago . I am very pleased with it so far.

Yeah we have underwater snags but I like the sensitivity of it and the ability to cast kinda far. This is only for worms and small spinnerbaits. We use 12 on big spinnerbaits and crankbaits. We don't catch monsters.

fishinpox 06-12-2011 10:39 PM

20 lb pp with 15 lb fluro leader for everything except topwater . Topwater I use straight 20 lb pp braid . I hate the strech of mono . I fish with the drag really really loose. I use my thumb the control the amount of line I allow a fish to take . Mono is poo poo

Yeah you may be right. I would start using braid again if it proved its worth to me. Or I could actually afford it.

skeeter77346 06-13-2011 05:19 AM

Suffix 832 in the #test you like. Great line.

LPfishnTIM 06-13-2011 06:08 AM

suffix mono and braid, seaguar fluoro, or xps fluoro, I've tried other fluorocarbon brands and most of them suck, vicious brand worked good the first trip I used it on then next week it was brittle and breaking.

LPfishnTIM 06-13-2011 06:09 AM

I Like p-line too!

huntin fool 06-13-2011 09:10 AM

Actually I have 12 and 14 lb for bass im sorry.

10 for trout.

I don't like a heavy lbs. test line at all. (My flippin stick is the only exception)

redfishmaster 06-15-2011 09:28 PM

the line im usin is gorilla tough 80# braid from walmart it costs bout 22 dollars and it dont break at all it has to be cut to break and also using steel leaders on the end of the line on my pole

Savagespec619 06-15-2011 09:39 PM
