speck-chaser 08-05-2009 10:25 PM

a lease in the atchafalaya swamp

Ray 08-05-2009 10:26 PM

I hunted right on the south border of the Cameron Prairie Refuge(what was once part of the Sabine Refuge), just north of Cameron. It was directly south of the Lambert Bayou weirs. I hunted there for 25 years, but had to stop due to a back injury.
Before that, I hunted another spot north of Cameron, but south of the drainage ditch and another couple of spots in Little Chenier. All were on private land, no leases.

ray at least when the weather is bad the duck huntings good you got that going for you

Ray 08-05-2009 10:34 PM

The last couple years I hunted ducks, the weather was warm and sunshiney the first half. Mosquitoes were killer. For years, I never had to hunt past 7 am. The last couple years, I sometimes hunted till 9 am to get 3 limits. I had a 3 man blind.

yak'em-n-stack'em 08-05-2009 10:35 PM

Yes. It seems like when I want to hunt there is no wind and it's blue bird. Time to fish? Windy and rainning.

We have the picture at our camp of the guy duck hunting and the fish at jumping out the water. And then he is fishing and ducks are eerywhere. Story of my life

Ray 08-05-2009 10:41 PM

We had a lot of undersized redfish and garfish in my pond. On calm days, you could see them around the blind.

yak'em-n-stack'em 08-05-2009 10:43 PM

I saw plenty gar and mullet and some other typebof fish but that's it. Wish we could get some reds in there. Take the slowness out of a slow day

Ray 08-05-2009 10:45 PM

As soon as you would throw a line, the ducks would come in the pond.
Happens every time you take a piss, the ducks fall out the sky and you have something else in your hand instead of a gun.

yak'em-n-stack'em 08-05-2009 10:49 PM

Oh trust me. We've killed more ducks while someone was peeing than anything else

Toledo Bend....best kept secret in the state. Limit after limit of big ducks. And the best part about it is that its FREE. No expensive blind or lease fee. Plenty of room to hunt and black sky full of ducks. Love it..been hunting there for twenty years. I have hunted from one end of the state to the other and no other place comes close.

quackills 08-06-2009 08:47 PM

Cheneyville

I'm pretty sure I am in a lease up in Cheneyville this year. I am fairly new to duck hunting so maybe some of you fellas might like to come with me one morning. Last year was not a good year with all the water from the hurricanes, but in years past this blind has done really well.

adamsfence 08-06-2009 09:46 PM

wvidrine is millers private once duck season starts never been thought you had to be on a lease or something

Had a chance to lease a blind in the lake this year. Decided not to due to the screwed up rules they have. It would have been convenient, I only live 10 min. from the lake. Plus the alligators are so bad you can't use a dog. I still hunt on some of the Miller estate property, but not in the lake.

fullrutt 08-07-2009 06:20 AM

Yea the corn is fun! The damn woodducks ar unbelievable like nats!! Around Christmas when the big groups of mallards start coming we flooded another couple of fresh fileds of corn and is murder! It's such a good time! Standing corn is the way to go. Even the timber when we flood the acorns it's crazy how the ducks get thru the trees.

The only bad thing is we do not get any teal or widgeon. Except during late dec-Jan we get the big purple head blue wings come in with the mallards. Very few though!

Good luck with everyone's season!

specktator 08-07-2009 06:50 AM

Henry and rosteet was family..that where we hunted..our friend was good friends with billy rosteet (his mom was a henry) so we got to hunt out there...

Ray 08-07-2009 09:37 PM

I think the guy's name was Matt Rosteet that hunted across the fence from me. He was the fartherest blind to the East on the Henry property. I was the fartherest blind West on the Davis property.

Fool was Johns, Scooters and Jeffs camps there when you hunted out there. They were right behind the corthouse on the gravel on the left.

Ray 08-07-2009 10:07 PM

Matt's pond had a sandy bottom and full of feather grass. No one hunted it for the first 20 years that I hunted my blind. Ducks would come from the refuge behind us to the North and fly South to that pond, right over me.
Before the weirs, it was a lot of Greenwings, Pintails, Canvasbacks and Widgeons. After the weirs, it turned to Gray ducks, Bluewings and Pintails. My pond was about 50 acres in size. I had a 3 man blind with 10 to 12 dozen decoys.
There was a big line of canes between his blind and mine and to the south, there was a levee that went East and West across the South end of both our ponds.
