LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - The Lake Charles Fire Department works an overnight fire at Cormie's Grocery on Big Lake Road.

They got the call around 2 AM Friday morning. The building was fully engulfed by flames. It is believed the fuel pumps at the gas station were off. Smoke could be seen from I-210 and residents report smelling smoke as far away as Sulphur.
No word on how the fire started. We'll continue to follow the story here on kplctv.com and on 7 News.

hadabite 06-24-2011 06:34 AM

That's horrible! Chris would be crazy if he didn't rebuild. I hope they get back on their feet soon!

Raymond 06-24-2011 07:19 AM

Think chris had his insurance covered properly or pray he did . Yes, cormies is and has been part of my big lake experience for a long time. It will come back, bet on that statement!

joshdomingue 06-24-2011 07:28 AM

Way to much money made there to not rebuild ....... now he can build it the way he wants it

mcjaredsandwich 06-24-2011 07:33 AM

Best wishes to chris and his family. I think his employees are going to suffer the most. There going to be out of work for at least a few months.

ScubaLatt 06-24-2011 07:53 AM

ditto to the above posts. Nothing like chicken fingers and potato wedges after a long day fishing and boat washing! ! !

bjhooper82 06-24-2011 08:10 AM

That sure does suck. Just glad it didn't happen during the day and everybody is ok.

bsoileau 06-24-2011 08:14 AM

My buddy that lives next door and is related to the family was having to move all there construction equipment and trailers because it was right along the fence on the south side of Cormie's.

Cormie's is also a big part of my big lake and duck hunting Experience also. I shop there at least 3 times a week. They also have the best chickin salad sandwiches. They make too much money not to rebuild, cause there parking lot is always full

I recommend everyone use Jimbos on common st. They also have ethanol free gas and top notch breakfast sandwiches. Then you can take gauthier or Lincoln back to big lake rd.

I second this. They also have some decent boudin as well as free coffee for fisherman going out. Little tricky to get in and out of especially if the spot has cars in the parking lot

joshdomingue 06-24-2011 09:03 AM

Man i just thought ........ no more corndogs!!!! Cormies definitely had the best corndogs that i've ever ate!!!!!

Super Spook 06-24-2011 09:06 AM

Jimbo's across from Cowboy's?

Man that is terrible to hear! Best chix salad around and a great little store with everything. I hope they rebuild.

The gas station across from Prien Lake Park has Ethanol free gas as well.

bsoileau 06-24-2011 09:09 AM

They are going to rebuild for sure!

Dink 06-24-2011 10:36 AM

cajunboy0208 06-24-2011 07:47 PM

Hate to hear what happen to cormies they had the best corndogs sure they will rebuild all traffic going to big lake passes right by there.

Lake Chuck Duck 06-24-2011 10:42 PM

It was crazy, I pulled into the cormies parking lot to get out of the way of the fire truck that was behind me. All of a sudden 2 cop cars pulled up lights flashin and the fire truck stopped as well. I still had no idea what was goin on. Finally decided I should ease on out of there and when I rode along the side of it I saw the flames startin to come up through the roof. Thing was, I was sittin next to the gas pump and not one person yelled at me to get out of there. Guess that werent sure what was happening since they had just pulled up.

jchief 06-25-2011 02:24 PM

The first few minutes are total chaos on a structure fire. The fuel for the pumps in in underground storage, so there is not usually an issue with the pumps. There are exceptions.
