LOL... Its not as easy as you think.

popawillieq 07-15-2011 07:49 PM

The $300 is a compound bow, and the $100 is a recurve most likely

flounder_smacker 07-15-2011 08:01 PM

the one at academy for 120 is a pse recurve. don't buy it i broke the limbs on two of them last summer and pse doesn't sell replacement limbs so you have to buy a whole new bow. i bought a old compound off las classifieds and put a pro retrieve on it. you can find a good youth bow pretty cheap.

Law was changed last year. Anyone can use one for hunting. This does not apply to federal refuges unless it changes this season.

I have been shooting one for years due to neck issues.

speck-chaser 07-15-2011 08:53 PM

I gots a crossbow!!!

jchief 07-15-2011 08:57 PM

I shoot a Horton 175. Paid about $600 for a combo several years ago. There are several good brands out there. Depends on how much you want to spend. Go to Basspro or Cabelas web page and look around.

No harm intended on this comment.....but if you have no issues concerning you pulling back a compound, that's the way to go.......people can say what they want, but a decent compound has more speed, kinetic energy & is more accurate than a cross bow.

SaltyShaw 07-15-2011 09:07 PM

Thank ya bgizzles

speck-chaser 07-15-2011 09:11 PM

how many fps, does a regular compound bow fly?

jchief 07-15-2011 09:16 PM

Varies

Varies alot. The ones today probably are around 300 fps average. Depends on arrow length, size, weight, bow, etc.

crossbows are a good bit faster than compounds bows. crossbows are way more forgiving as far as accuracy because you just put the crosshairs and fire. i didnt like when la allowed everyone to use them it should only be handicap only. i shot one of my buddys and could shoot 2'' groups at 40 yards all day. my compound is a destroyer 350 and ive been tuning it and might be able to get that on a good day.

call it like i see it. i would really like to know his draw length. w google how to measure draw length and get someone to measure you.

booyagasha 07-15-2011 09:34 PM

what a good draw? 175 lbs? 300?

draw weight? most bows max out at 70pounds. most people use 65pounds.

Hopedale Hustler 07-15-2011 11:33 PM

Thinkin bout breaking down and going get a z7 bout time to hang the pse up

Try again......you need to learn how to shoot.....I've been bowhunting & shooting competition 3D all over the US with compounds since the early 80's, i've shot my share of long, recurve & cross bows, a cross bow can't compete with a good compound, in fps & accuracy, been thru this a thousand times, same crap as the arti vs live thread.

huntin fool 07-15-2011 11:39 PM

Waltrip, been sticking gar for years at my culverts... Harder than you think playa. I got rid of my setup..Hung a light on the culverts and shot em as they swam in and out

I shoot the browning Barracuda, and realy like it, but the FishHawk is also a realy good bowfishing set up either will do fine.

fishin 07-16-2011 05:35 AM

I just got the stuff to screw onto my old compound bow. I went bow fishing for the first time in Toledo last year and loved it. Shot me a speck at warf in old settlement to but no it's not easy. I would def get somethin with a lighter draw. While my compound is probly more accurate and much faster my brother in laws cheap bow setup from academy is just as good and you'll get more shots off quicker and don't get wore out as fast. Aim low!

"W" 07-16-2011 05:59 AM

Does the string. Attached to the arrow mess your accuracy up?

No u just gotta kinda get used to it just like with anything else new ya know like fishing a 1/4 oz jig head all day than switching to a 1/2 oz

From the distances you'd be shooting at you should have no problem. General rule of thumb the greater the distance the less room for error. quarter inch off aim at 20 yrds is much less than quarter inch off aim at 50 yrds.

If you are looking for a bow I am about to sell my 2008 Diamond Marquis, I am going to switch to the new Z7 Xtreme or the Monster.

well maybe in the 80's compounds were faster but do some research pse has a crossbow that gets 425fps and someone else makes one advertising 450fps. find a bow that comes close to that. and 2'' groups at 40 with off the shelf bow is pretty good in anyones book. sorry we cant all be pros.

I hate to break this to you but a crossbow is close to 10-50 fps than a compound. The Matthews Monster is the fastest Bow I have ever shot with a 400 grain arrow and it tops out at about 350 with a 76 lb. draw weight. I am a firm believer also that if you are in good shape and can use a compund you should. the problem with crossbows is that to many archers treat them like a gun and do not practice nearly as much as they should. I shoot year round with my bow just to stay dialed in. Hunters bringing cross bows into the woods are shooting alot of the deer and are not hitting them in the sweet spot and they run off for long distances before dying and thus they are unable to retrieve the deer and the meat is wasted.
That being said crossbows are faster, can be more accurate if practiced with more, there major downfall is they are a hell of a lot louder than compund bows.

yea, i saw that, but when shopping for crossbows, toys are considered under 100lbs. they go all the way up to 400lbs i believe...(probably overrated some )

im liking this 175 lbs draw and 235 fps....

and this has 225 draw and 350 fps...yows...

If u get the rings that slide on arrow and tie a loop on string so the string is allowed to fly directly behind the arrow it's not as bad but yes the weight of the string pulls down the back of the arrow. You won't be making many long shots though. It's a tricky sport. Not only adjusting for the string but the water distorts the fishs' actual location. You have to aim below the fish. Keep adjusting your shot till u start hitting them. U have to be patient though. Probly won't hit much at first but it will come. It's a lot of fun. I couldn't believe it when I smoked that speck hauling arse across that light.
