Catfish Fin right through thumb!!
Was bleeding like a friggin pig.
Talk about hurt, for at least 3 days. Finally starting to get better, but I almost stopped fishing and went home. Haha! I know i'm not the only one who ever got stuck by them bastards. I use my foot now to hold them down and plyers. |

buy yourself this right now!!! Hardheard fins will cause a bad bad infection!! |
One got me about 4 years ago about an inch into my hand between my first and second finger hurt for a week. Luckily I was juiced on some tequila! HaHa
|
I got a nice scar on my finger from one of those lil hardheads. Found out later I should have rubbed his belly on the wound, it is supposed to have some kinda neutralizing effect. Not sure if it works, but I promise if it happens to me again I will try it.

Rub his belly?
Man that **** was hurting so bad, all i could think about was going home.. lol But that metal thing sulphite is talking about is a good invention. I actually chopped that damn thing head off and used it for bait. |

I have caught 2 hardheads in the past 20 years, both on artificial.
One on topwater on the South end of Big Lake and the other at the Cameron Jettys, on Gulp. |
paul raised the question on the boat if you ever get poked by one what do you do? I said "PEE ON IT!"
not correct! LOL! |

BTW: Somebody flipped mine out of the boat and still had the hardhead on the line. If he posts in this thread he'll tell you about rubbing the hardhead slime on the spot where you get finned. He was skeptical, but tried it, he also said Thank You that really works. Only trick is it has to be the same hardhead. |
haha.
someone said it has poison in its fins, so thats why it doesnt stop bleeding like that. and can get infected. didnt have to pee at the time. |
I took one about half way through my foot last year trying to step on it. I wasn't even stepping hard but it went straight through my Wolverine boot!!! It broke the fin off and once I got my foot out of my boot, I had to use pliers to pull the fin the rest of the way through my boot soul!...In short, stepping on them is a bad idea too!
Oh yeah, the next morning putting that boot on was nothing nice!!...Or the day after the next! |

throught the boot sole?
wow, i knew they were sharp but ouch. i can imaging how that hurts. starting this weekend, im gonna use less weight and jigs to catch fish about 6-8 feet deep. no more bottom dwelling. |
Them flippers work on any kind of fish. We make them out of stainless steel tig rods. You can make 2 out of one rod.
If you don't have a flipper just hold your line up with it hanging......touch him..... he will stop moving, then slide your hand up on its back and put his back fin between your pointy and middle finger and get the hook out. Also, when i go trawling we use green rubbing alcohol after we get picked by shrimp or a catfish, burns like a mofo buts it is supposed to kill all the bacteria......also gives your hand a minty fresh smell. |
Got stuck with a mud cat thru my lacross insulated knee boots. I kicked it as hard as I could.. Couldn't walk for a week (opening week of duck season).
Still got the fin in my foot, no infections, etc. Pretty good story teller |
A Clorox pen or regular clorox out of the jug does wonder to a catfish sting. Might burn at first but it will heal a lot quicker. Also will heal your hand after getting stung with shrimp. Keep one in the tackle box all the time.
|
Putting your inured part under the warm pee hole of the outboard helps to ease some of the pain immediately after getting finned. Definitely use diluted Clorox ASAP to the affected area. Keep a close eye on the injured area, if the redness persists or spreads you need to seek medical attention. Hopefully no residual fin is embedded in your wound so you need to keep close tabs on it.
Vibrio is a very bad bacteria and not something anyone should take likely--I'm talking about loss of limb and possibly your life. |

I am like Ray, but about 20 years ago I caught one and had swung it in the boat. No sooner than I swung it in it fell off the hook. It's fin went thru the top of my tennis shoe and buried into the top of my foot. Major pain.
|
Wet Skoal has always been my choice held on by a band aid but will get a clorox pen, thanks for the information.. I have a flipper but most of my friends are afraid to use it..extra set of pliers grabbing the top jaw works well
|
My son used the flipper a couple of weeks ago. It flipped it off,but he wasnt hanging the fish over the boat, and it slung right back onto the top of his foot. We had to yank it out.It was standing upright by its fin in his foot. I keep peroxide in the boat along with a first aid kit. Seemed to work pretty good, but the pain stays with you for a while. I have also used the catfish slime to rub on the affected area before, and seems to work well too.

hard head trick. if you have a decent rod and it isnt a 5pound hard head reel him in leave about 4 foot of line and swing that sum beesh up and back down hard into the water making him slap the water. stuns the crap out of them and they dont wiggle. plus it relieves a little anger.
|
I treat hard heads and gaff top like rattle snakes!! I don't allow them in the boat period!!!:shaking: Catfish flippers are cheaper than the ER, and can prevent a very unpleasant experience. Jus remember to flip them AWAY from you, and down toward the water, where they belong!! If you get stuck rub the slime on the wound, it will neutralize the sting. The slime protects the fish from its own poison.

I use those metal grabbers & squeeze the $&@t out of em till they're eyes pop out! No lie.....both will happen if you squeeze hard enough! Relieves a lil anger also! Then I giggle! :)

first time i heard of someone losing a limb after a catfish sting.
most of the time they swallow the dang hook so far down till you have to work to get it out. not like its on their jaw or nothing simple. |
When I was about 10 years old, I kicked a dead hardhead off the bank and into the water. The dorsal fin went through the rubber sole of my tennis shoe and into my big toe. Quite a mess. Needless to say, I was much more careful from that point on when it came to handling the sorry stinking things, but my techniques were not as humane as the flipper...:work: M80s worked well if you wanted your hook back and didn't want to risk getting stuck. M80 in the mouth, light it, throw it back...and BOOM..reel in the hook.
