School Board Leases.
Just got back from a committe meeting with the Vermilion Parish School Board.
Me and 5 friends were their to place a bid for a school board section So. of Pecan Island. Not even a full section about 465 acres. The present lease holder had the proir 5 years for about $6,800/yr. 4 bids. Our's was read 2 nd. $15,500. The leassors had a partner (Member), bid against him. 31K. The leasse holder bid $37,000. That's F ing CRAZY. COULD NOT BELIEVE IT. Can any of you believe that Money! Biggun |
Easy to believe if the hunting is any good. It's done got stupid!
|
Dudes with big checkbooks pay big money to consistantly kill birds. I would if I had the cheese. That is crazy though. Is that lease that good?

Plenty of companies out there can easily fork out the g's for something like that to take a few customers on a few hunts. |

Bigj Howed you guys do in GI our trip sucked too many problems to post... |
Should be an outstanding property but $ don't work considering it's only 465 acres. All the bottoms leases are in llc's to charge back those crazy dollas. Options are only pubic land and that isn't much of an option n my book.

Big money down in PI. Doctors, lawyers, politicians, etc. My uncle's lease just came back up for bid. No telling what he paid. Might be the same lease u are talking about.
|
Is it only some parishes that lease out school board property? Because I know for some places all you need is a permit to hunt it and pretty much anyone can get one.
|
I have never witnessed any free hunting on any school board property in the state. Lease payments are used in each boards general fund. With the deficits most boards operate under I doubt any would allow users free access when they can get top dollar. Never have and never will enter the school board bidding wars, I have always believed this system is rigged.

Why do you say public land is not much of an option?? I know tons of people that hunt WMA's and do really well consistantly. Yes the hunting is a little more work, but usually produces plenty of quality ducks. |
St. Landy parish gives a permit to hunt school board property. Its free. You go to the office and fill out a sheet. Its not a big piece of land, but good location.

2. Pressure, the same idiots I see on the lake are on the refuge systems wandering around clueless. 3. At 45 I have done my time hunting public,if that is all there is I would rather sell my equipment and find another hobby. |
Raymond i'm just like you i'm done with hunting the refuges. Nothing wrong with it, cause i can remember pounding the ducks in sabine back in my younger days.

I understand your frustration with WMAs and finding a lease. I have been trying to find a decent lease since Rita and grew up hunting WMAs. I just hate to see people quit hunting because of all the obstacles that are presented to us now. Something good will come up eventually. I gave up a lease in JB in 07 and ducks were nonexistant there for 4 years before that. They absolutely hammered ducks last year out there and several of those leases were leased by new leasees last year. |
I will never quit duck hunting for sure, and if all i had was to hunt the wmas i would if i couldn't find a lease.

Same Here
A couple of years ago I was able to participate on a section near FWC, the previous 5 yrs it was going for 5,000yr, so I Bid $6500.00. There were only two bidders myself and the previous leasers, they bid $13,000.00. I was like WTH:eek:. Too rich for my blood.
|
I know some guys that were paying $15000.00 (1000 acres or so) for a lease in PI. They crush the ducks. One of the best leases around. Land owner went up to $27000.00 on them the next year cause he knew people would pay it. And they sucked it up and pay it.

If I had them money and killing a lot of birds I would pay it to! |
I'll go buy it befor I spend that much! This is why I don't hunt down here. The most I ever paid for a lease back home was working cattle for a day or making weld repairs on farm equipment. There's no way I would pay what these dudes want!

If the state would manage what public habitat we have for ducks and/or allow access or even limited access to some of the better state owned lands, like White Lake, this "big money" duck hunting world we live in down here would be alleviated some...
|
Ive seen blinds go for $10k a piece just south of Deer Park along the Ms river.....all doctors. That was probably 10 years ago. One of the blinds used to be Fred Parnells, some the BR folks will know who that is.

I was told by someone that was bidding on some school board property that he and members of his group would each put in a bid. If there was no one bidding against them, the lowest bidder would leave his bid and the others would retract their bids. If others were there bidding on the same property, they would leave their bids in and hope the other bids would be read first so they would know which bid to retract. Warren |

Biggun the old lease owner has a monopoly on it and knows exactly what to bid on it.Just like all old conoco property between kaplan and guedan the trahans will continue to rule....
|
I was told that in vermillion parish the previous year's lease holder has the option to match the highest bid to keep the lease.

If it were that easy, a lot of hunters would do it. You can have the public land and I will keep my 5K lease! |
