Hog Hunting
Got a good friend that is starting to have a hog problem and wants to start hunting them.
He owns the property and it's out in the middle of no where so dont have to worry about neighbors. Anyone know the specifics on the new night hunting laws??? |
I know that I need to go with you!!

night hunting for hogs only legal til Aug 30th, you can only use a .22 longrifle or magnum, or shot guns including 10gauge.

Just took out my climber. Everything else is already out, cleaned and ready.....just give me the word!!!!

The legislature has passed and the governor has signed the bill (Act 95) eliminating the weapon restrictions for the nighttime shooting of outlaw quadrupeds, nutria and beaver. There is a requirement that they notify the local sheriff. This new law is effective August 15. After that date, there is no longer a need for persons to apply for a permit to use firearms greater than .22 or shotguns with buckshot. Also passed (Act 29) was a bill allowing use of sound suppressors for take of these animals, provided the person is authorized by ATF. The text of both Acts are attached.

after august 15 this year till august 30 all centerfire rifles, scopes, lights and sound suppressors are fair game. you still need written permission from the land owner if you lease the property. also its probably a good idea to notify the sheriff and wlf that you will be blasting at night so they dont come check you and mess up your hunt.

Make a few traps then you just walk up with a pistol and fire away. We used to get 10+ every few days at a lease we used to have in Avondale.
|
I'm in Florida for a few days at my family vacation house when we went through the gate last night there were groups of 4-5 hogs all over the golf course , went back with the golf cart to try n smoke one but couldn't find em
|
Last year we saw evidence where they passed thru his property maybe 2 times. his neighbor up the road was growing corn. No corn this year. My buddy cleared another `15 acres this past spring and left 5 pecan trees. They are plowing up the ground around the pecans.
He is going to put up a game camera and see if we can get a time frame and then i'll go up and put out some corn. |

I got these pictures back in March, 5 minutes before I checked the camera.
This is in the Atchafalaya basin. During the Deer season, there was almost no sign of hogs. Then a month later the area was tore up with hog digging. . |
I second the trap if y'all are wanting to put a good dent in the population. I have seen up to 15 hogs in one big trapping pen before most of them were piglets. But the good thing about a trapping pen is they can go in but not out.
|
you should get some nightvision
|
thermal scopes
|
yea thermal scopes are great if you have the money for them
|
Call the LDWF........they will give you the low down, they want them gone as bad as you do, they will even come out & shoot them at night with thermal scopes, my friend is the Vet at LDWF & he goes a good bit at night on Hog complaints.

Nothin will thin em out like dogs but if yall wanna have some fun set up a stand with corn about 15yards away.Get one of those pickin lights and wire in a dimmer switch, run cord to your stand with a car battery. When you hear hogs in the corn slowly dim the lights up.They wont notice and if your shootin a bow they dont even know whats goin on.One will run off and the rest keep eatin will you reload!
|
I worked with a guy that told me you can take a post hole digger and dig a hole 2-3ft down then mix corn and dirt filling hole back and then leave some corn on top, when they start eatin it they will stay close by since they will have to work down and dig the hole out

My buddy has decided that he is going to do the trap method. They don't live on the farm and usually only go up on weekends .
He is worried that as hot as it is that a hog getting in the trap on monday won't survive till sat??? How many days do y'all think that he can wait between checking the trap ? or,should he just wait till it starts cooling off to set trap(s)? He dosn't hunt the property so he can trap anytime. |
From what I have read....... when the temperature is hot [90+ ?] a hog will die by the next day. I don't know if putting in a water bucket would help keep it alive.
A shady spot might help some. |
If it is a big trap a children's plastic swimming pool is good. Try to build your pen around a stand of trees so they also get shade. This would be for a pen maybe 20-30' in diameter. Google figure 6 hog trap and you can find some designs.

Get Night Vision! I have one on my .22. They arent all that expensive either, same price as a regular scope. |
Dogs...mine in particular. Once you do it, youll be hooked forever.
|
it would have to be in the shade for sure,a five gallon bucket of water wont work b/c when that door slams shut they're gonna go ape sh**! They wont survive without water for that long
|
Summer time the trap has to be checked daily, even then In have seen hogs die before we got to the trap, we cleared the trap around lunch time on one day and went back to the trap around 2pm the next and there was only one hog in it and it was dead.
|
Anyone know how to clean those nasty sumbritiches.
