Possible Tropical Depression

The low down by Cuba has a 80% chance of forming a tropical depression in the next 48 hours. Some of the models have it going into the Texas coast or as far east as SW La. on Friday to Saturday. Currently it is shown as a tropical storm on landfall.

meathauler 07-27-2011 09:05 AM

We need the rain!!!!

wetaline 07-27-2011 10:16 AM

And there's 2 more tropical waves behind it. That time of the year!!

yep.... sucks! Look more west and theres barely any showers, which probably means Big Lake this weekend... sorry arse lake lol

Finfeatherfur 07-27-2011 11:15 AM

I just got word we are evacuating WC 587, which is a P&A job so it is not that big of a deal on the production side. We do have lots of vessels and divers there, so we are shutting them down till we get it out of our way, just to be on the safe side.

Question.....isn't this kinda "knee jerk"? Theyre having a hard time even calling it a low pressure system

I'd call that putting safety ahead of production. I've been stuck offshore a few times too many due to "wait and see". Friday may be unflyable due to weather conditions. Besides, they are non essential.

Ronnie

Dink 07-27-2011 11:32 AM

Ok. Was just wondering. Since all the big ones 4 and 5yrs back, folks tend to overcompensate.

This is a P&A job!!!!! Why would we want our crews getting absolutely nothing done on the clock, except trying to keep them from passing out from dehydration due to seasickness. Get them in, let it pass, then send them back out. The platform has been shut in for 5 months, not like the oil company is missing any revenue.

Good for your business.... cause once a rain drop hits the windshield everybody forgets how to drive!!!

Finfeatherfur 07-27-2011 11:41 AM

All I know is, if this thing continues like it is scheduled, we will have some very, very happy people in Texas! My boss is jumping for joy right now - he has a lease outside of Laredo.

Dink 07-27-2011 11:43 AM

BRyan, this thing popped up over night. If it got bad through the day, how fast can they get the gulf evacuated??

Do they shut down the pumping or leave a small crew? Always wondered how it works

eman 07-27-2011 11:47 AM

Overnight???
I been watching it for 5 days.
Just looked at the radar and looks like ev1 from laffy. to houston is gettin some more rain. Sunny and hot here

DUCKGOGETTER 07-27-2011 11:54 AM

Been raining here in lake charles

Finfeatherfur 07-27-2011 12:04 PM

At the end of the day, it boils down to common sense. There is only so many helicopters/boats that can get people in back to shore in a safe manner. Some chopper companies fly when others won't, and some boat companies will not go out if it gets above a certain sea height, when others will. Thus, it takes a lot of communication from the operators, vessle/chopper companies, and the weather geeks. At the same time, their is a million other things that determne if a platform flows or not when evacuated. Sometimes the platform is manned and can flow with no one there with SCADA controls. Sometimes it is a small unmanned platform that always has flow on SCADA, but has to be shut in because the pipeline company shuts down their pipeline so there is no where for the product to flow.

Usually, if it is a named storm, the non-essential people get shut down just as a precaution. I have been out there when it was a storm that caught us before we couldn't get off the rig. I have also been out there in a wintertime storm where the wind blew 40-50 knots for 2 days and they never even thought about bringing us in, because it was not "tropical" in nature. Rough as he!!, but they didn't see it as a threat. Had guys getting thrown out of bunks on a jack-up it was so bad, but to everyone else -it was just a "front".

Montauk17 07-27-2011 12:22 PM

Yes, we are. While we are getting plenty of rain now, we are still way behind. It is affecting the underground water tables. It will take alot to get us out of the drought.

They update the drought numbers on Thursday and I expect we will go down a notch from extreme to whatever is next.

They may leave a skeleton crew to continue producing until the last minute. Then they can round them up on the last flight. If the oil pipeline or gas pipeline co. shut their valves, then it's useless to leave the skeleton crew. If the platform has a diesel generator, put that one online to keep the freezers and refridgerators working.
The liability is high for these old platforms. My old platform toppled over in Rita. Waves also moved a skid with two 60" X 15' vertical scrubbers with 8" piping about 8" and this was around 70' above the water.

Dink 07-27-2011 02:06 PM

70!!!!????? Wow!! Goes to show ya. Don't mess with mother nature!! Especially when she's pissed

"W" 07-27-2011 03:11 PM

None of our piplines are shuting down or even worried at this point
Shell
Exxon
Bonita
Williams

Frank Buck 07-27-2011 03:18 PM

I guess it takes a special breed of folks for that...I would feel like a trapped rat....getting thrown onto the floor out of a bunk while sleeping!!!....And you can do nothing about it....You just have to stay there until a chopper or a boat comes and gets your hind end....WOW!....

Lake Chuck Duck 07-27-2011 03:20 PM

They are flyin the plane to the storm now. Should be a named storm soon.

"W" 07-27-2011 03:30 PM
