Fresh or Dead

Friend is coming over tomorrow morning and wants gafftop and sheephead. Which is better, froze or fresh skrimps for these species and why?? Where should we start and will 50# PP be heavy enough line??

Thanks

mcjaredsandwich 08-03-2011 06:38 PM

Dead shrimp and cut mullet for dem gafftops, they seem to love that. Ive only caught one sheeps head and it was a 2in dead pogey that I dropped in front of its face. Is your friend from texas or mississippi

chugbug2000 08-03-2011 09:05 PM

Dang it,I'm on my way.

Raymond 08-03-2011 09:14 PM

What do y'all consider trophy length on both species we are looking for record setting fish?

cajunforeman 08-03-2011 09:40 PM

You always gotta stir the pot!!

jchief 08-03-2011 09:42 PM

Okay, for gaftop, live or dead. For sheepshead, live is much better.

Fly fisherman consider a sheephead a Louisiana permit. They hardly ever eat an artificial.

Longcast could tell you the best way to rig up a pair of pliers for a weight.

Dink 08-04-2011 08:02 AM

$30 bait and all I've caught on it was a gaftop.......figures.

weedeater 08-04-2011 08:41 AM

msu-tfrancois 08-04-2011 09:16 AM

skyln95 08-04-2011 01:22 PM

i caught a sheephead on a morning glory saltwater assassin once. took me at least 15mins to get the dang hook out its mouth.

hadabite 08-04-2011 04:17 PM

I saw 2 guys had their boat up to the north bank in the south cut to West Cove on sunday. They were out of their boat walking the bank on the channel side fishing. They must of been fishing for some Sail Cats.

(this really did happen)

"W" You are the Saltwater Messiah. Keep up the good work. The proof is in the posts. Once again, I feel your pain.

Ray 08-04-2011 10:48 PM

They both hit artificial. Especially Trophy Sail Cats.

mooseman 08-05-2011 09:20 AM

Sheephead

They usually love dead shrimp, the more rotten the better...
And the Old Jetties should be the place to catch them, if you can't get offshore. They love to eat barnacles.

Used to catch some big ones by the hundreds against the pilings on the Old Bridge in Grand isle esp. in the winter and spring. Eatin barnacles like crazy as you could see em swimming around the pilings. Better than shrimp is fiddler crabs if you can get em. Reds like em too. We got fiddlers behind our camp just to try and smoked em.

Seen the VC eatin sheepshead raw (sushimi) w/ some soy sauce on the side as they came over the rail of the bridge. The knife was waitin!!

Your right. When I fish the Jetties my motto is bait big enough that the hardheads and gaffstop can't get it. It is amazing what those 3 lb hardheads can eat.

If the bait is big enough the cats and gaffstop will pick it up, drag it a little and then drop it. Sometimes they leave it alone long enough for a bull red to pick it up.

BArmand 08-11-2011 02:30 PM

If you don't have any luck in Big Lake I am willing to bring you on a guided gafftop trip to Cocodrie. It's a done deal under the birds this time of year, but there are some trash fish (trout) under them as well. Just have to weed out to get the good stuff.
