Merc. Or Yammyhaw

Which do you prefer Mercury Outboards, or Yamaha Outboards...2 stroke or 4 stroke?

LaAngler 08-15-2009 08:24 PM

merc 2.5 racing engine, 2 stroke

BIGJ 08-15-2009 08:43 PM

Yamaha Outboards... 4 stroke any day.

Bluechip 08-15-2009 08:49 PM

I'm running a Yamaha 200 HPDI....no complaints..

I have only owned THE BEST "YAMAHA". I have owned an HPDI....great motor....but as my slogan says it all.....4 Stroke Yamaha.....need not say more!!!!

flounder_smacker 08-15-2009 10:36 PM

deff would go with the yamaha. as for 2 or 4 stroke it depends on the application

Marshrat 08-16-2009 10:06 AM

I commercial fish & crab and have run almost every motor on the market, but out of the 2 you listed Mercury has given me the least problems and the best fuel economy.

Ray 08-16-2009 10:08 AM

A lot of commercial fishermen I know have gone to Tahotsu(spelling?) and Suzuki.
Before 4 strokes, they mostly ran Mercury and Evinrudes.

Deadly D 08-16-2009 10:17 AM

Merc all the way:)

a yamaha? sure you dont mean the verado?

flounder_smacker 08-19-2009 08:21 PM

merc has the supercharger. yamaha has the v8

all star rod 08-19-2009 08:35 PM

This is one of those topics that we can all agree to disagree on just like FORD OR CHEVY.....WELL GIVE ME A YAMAHA & A CHEVY.

jahosaphet 08-19-2009 10:04 PM

both are good, but both have weaknesses, i give the 4 stroke to yami, but you CANNOT beat the fuel economy of an opti, if you can prove me wrong. and those who say the optis blow up alot... well that was true at one time, but you yall need to look into how many hpdi blow. but either way the market has come along way for direct injection, the fuel econemy is awesome. but still give me my choice and its a carb 2 stroke, be it yami or merc, but those v-4 yammis are really hard to beat

all star rod 08-19-2009 10:20 PM

Are you saying a MERC OPTI gets better fuel economy than a 4 stroke Yamaha........

cmdrost 08-20-2009 08:42 AM

no....i think he's saying he gives the 4 stroke market advantage to Yamaha and the 2 stroke market to the Merc Opti.

I've run both, currently have 4 stroke Yamaha....really can't go wrong with either.

Jordan 08-20-2009 08:46 AM

200 Johnson V-6 like a lady... ya gotta warm her up first to get the pleasure...

jahosaphet 08-20-2009 12:22 PM

opti has best fuel econemy on the market..... period

all star rod 08-22-2009 09:42 PM

Dude...no way an Optimax will get better fuel economy than a Yamaha 4 stroke....Get real....

I have a 90 optimax that gets better fuel economy than my uncle's 90 yamaha 4 stroke and my boat is heavier than his.

Warren this guy is tripped out on yamaha. I gave up on him along time ago. There is nothing wrong with a yamaha and nothing wrong with a merc.

Marshrat 08-23-2009 10:32 AM

I know how it is D. Kinda like the Ford vs. Chevy.

He has tried every prop pitch and diameter and found the best one for his application. We both use our boat for crabbing and my boat has more power and gets better fuel mileage. His motor has had some major problems, (dumping fuel out of the breather) and I have heard of some other motors in the 90 to 115 range to have problems also.

A buddy of mine had a 115 Yamaha 4 stroke with less than 200 hours that had 30 psi compression on each cylinder. Mechanic said he could not figure out the problem. He changed his oil every 6 months and never run the motor over 4500 rpm. He went bought a 2 stroke and hasn't had any trouble since.

jahosaphet 08-23-2009 09:53 PM

long live the 2 stroke engine... i love how ppl dont like to accept the facts... opti all the way for fuel econemy!

cmdrost 08-31-2009 10:02 AM

bumping this thread.

Just recently rode on a boat with new Merc Verado. That engine is the daddy!! Easily trumps my yammy f150. It is more quiet, seems to be more fuel efficient, and is quicker. I guess that supercharger works! I think they finally got the kinks out of it.

jahosaphet 08-31-2009 06:29 PM

verado gen 2's are ok. but they still dont get the econemy of a dfi 2stroke.

all star rod 08-31-2009 07:52 PM

Yes you are right DI are the best. I went fishing with a buddy of mine recently that had an OPTI and he got 7 - 8 mpg.

netmkr 09-03-2009 04:01 PM

i own both and they are good motors haven't had any problems with either one and i put alot of hrs on them

7-8-mpg is pretty dang good.

all star rod 09-03-2009 04:27 PM

Ray if you believe that then I have some ocean front property in Arizona to sell ya....

Ray 09-03-2009 04:35 PM

I get 3 to 5 on my Yamaha 150, depending on the speed.
Running at different speeds, last two times I ran my boat around 95 to 100 miles, I burned 24 gallons of gas. I thought that was good.
My old 200 Mercury on a 21 ft. Proline deep V boat got around 2 mpg fishing offshore.

all star rod 09-03-2009 06:35 PM

running at an average of 5K rpms (41-43mph) with a full load...3 men, fuel 44gal, 162 qt ice chest and gear I get a SOLID 4 miles per gallon with my 4 stroke 150 Yamaha. BTW, my boat has a dry weight of 1,700#...I think that is great fuel economy based on my comments. NO way a DI will get better...PERIOD...

jahosaphet 09-03-2009 07:04 PM

you say this based on what? the person who sold it to you?

all star rod 09-03-2009 08:00 PM

Jahosaphet....if your last post was a question to me.....No it is not based on word of mouth or a sales pitch...It (the fuel economy I listed) is based on MY acutal use....REAL TIME DATA.

coachlaw 09-03-2009 10:59 PM

I'd say 2 stroke Yammy for reliability and weight. But I run an old Evinrude now. They don't make them like this anymore :( I sure would love for a 70 horse Yammy 2 stroke to show up at my door. I'd have the Ugly Mudda runnin' again.

jahosaphet 09-03-2009 11:07 PM

no not you fuel econemy. you claiming that 4 strokes are more economical than dfi. i bet you think there faster too...

all star rod 09-04-2009 07:56 AM

Never said they were more economical. Maybe they are. For the yearly servicing the 4 stroke will cost a little more to service than the DI motors. But you need to constantly by oil for the DI motors which is about $20-25 a gallon. BTW, I do not think 4 strokes are faster. When comparing speed you have to compare apples to apples for a given situation. I am not a fisherman on the bass circuit so I really do not care about blazing speed. For me, if I can get out the hole fast (which I can) and do close to 50 with a full load (which I can) that is all I need. As I stated before I had a 150 Hpdi on my old boat. Good motor. Now I have a 4 stroke. Again, based on my experience, I perfer the 4 stroke. I was once like you and kept talking myself out of buying a 4 stroke on my first boat. One last thing, the only reason I got the Hpdi on my first boat was because the dealer cut me a deal and knocked off $1,750 if I went the DI. If all things were equal or close to equal it would of been the 4 stroke hands down.

Montauk17 09-04-2009 04:59 PM

ok im not knockin the 4 stoke they are very good motors but, you claim that fuel consumption is less... at least you did. thats the only point that i am arguing is that di has less fuel consumption.

Montauk17 09-04-2009 05:00 PM

oops i meant to post that under jahosaphet, montak is my co-worker i acidently posted under his account...

coachlaw 09-04-2009 10:18 PM

I'll knock 4 strokes. A motor should not weigh more than I do. :D They just plain weigh too much.

all star rod 09-05-2009 07:42 AM

You must be talking about the MERC 4 stroke Verado......I will take the little added weight for fuel economy, no oil, no smoke, no noise. Also, based on Yamaha weights.....the 150 4 stroke is actually 2#'s lighter then the 150 HPDI. On the larger motors the 4 strokes are about 8-10% heavier then the HPDI. 225 HPDI = 539# compared 225 4 stroke 583....
As far as CARB motors....well those are history. Yamaha still makes a 150 one.

evis102 09-12-2009 12:13 AM

No motor will out perform the XS series of motors from Mercury. And I mean the ones that come from Mercury Racing. In 2.5 years of fishing a 250XS 3 to 5 days a week I have had zero problems. If you try one you will be hooked for life.
