Gettin' a couple 45-70's

Myself and Dad are getting each either a 444 or a 45-70
Its a toss up between the .444 or the 45-70.
Kinda like the .444, and I think my dad likes the 45-70.

Tax free weekend next weekend :grinpimp:

Montauk17 08-27-2011 02:43 PM

45-70 bullets are cheaper than the .444
My grandpaw just bought a thompson center .444 kicks like a mule with those 230 grain bullets. Put a nice bruise on my shoulder from sighting in.

Duck Butter 08-27-2011 02:50 PM

45-70 with the Hornady bullets with the conical tip make that gun an accurate 200 yd gun. Never shot a .444 but 45-70 doesn't have much kick. And if you are ever in BFE and happen to run out of bullets, there is a better chance the mom and pop store carries 45-70 rather than .444.

Yep....If I ever put the smoke pole down I will go with the 45-70. Hard to spend the bones on something I might use twice a season.

huntin fool 08-27-2011 03:09 PM

I figured that 45-70 has alot less kick. I'll probably be using the 45-70 75% of the season since I plan to hunt creek bottoms on our lease this year for some horns. Especially with the way this summer is, and my creeks have water, so Me and Climber are becoming best friends.

What scope would yall suggest?

I will be spending most of my time in the creek myself, but with the bowtech instead of a rifle. Hard to beat the nikon pro staff for the money, luepold if you want to spend the bones. I have a pro staff on my .270 and I have no complaints.

the 2nd part of the statement is true about the accuracy.

Everyone I know that has a 30-30 says its a good 'brush gun':grinpimp:. Even a .50 cal is going to deflect when it hits brush. I guess one or two people while running dogs in Union Parish took a pop shot at a spike in some brush and the got lucky and had the bullet deflect INTO the deer. Word got out after that it was a good brush gun I guess. They are still telling those stories and still fighting each other over which is the best: 30-06 or .270!

How much u looking to spend? I would get like a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40 for it. (less than $200) That's what I have on my blackpowder. My buddy that hunts with me hunts strictly with his crack-barrel 45-70 now with "open sights" cause where I hunt it is so hilly, your longest shot is usually not more than 100 yards. Killed a nice buck with it last 2 years.

wtretrievers 08-27-2011 03:43 PM

I've got 3 45-70's all 3 have a nikon pro staff, 2 of em are 3x9x40's & one 3x9x50 not a problem.....shoot the hornady LEVERevolutions, I've been really impressed with them,

Im going out on a limb here and saying the boys shoot a 45-70 upon occasion, so how do they like em?

wtretrievers 08-27-2011 03:58 PM

You are correct..... They like em. Garrett hunted with his all year last season. I take mine other than primitive a good bit. Garrett shot a coyote 1st morning he ever hunted with it at about 125 yds, he said Daddy when i pulled the trigger that thing did a flip & a half before hit the ground

huntin fool 08-27-2011 04:01 PM

I plan to hunt mine all season. It sounds like I will love this gun. I plan to shoot a hog before season. So we shall see ;)

wtretrievers 08-27-2011 04:03 PM

It's a beast to sight in, unless you have something like a lead sled to shoot it out of.

You shoot those and there is really no need for another gun to hunt deer with in Louisiana woods.

Of course if you hunt with my in-laws in Union Parish you are gonna NEED a .300 Win Ultra Mag, with a 20 power scope to shoot them 'big bucks' that show up 300 yards down the pipelines:rotfl: Most of the deer are less than 50 yards (under the feeder) and many are less than 50 lbs!

I worked a check station at Union WMA on opening day once and weighed in a 28 lb deer! It was field dressed though! Dude shot the deer in the neck with a very powerful rifle at 6 steps. He pulled up to the check station and went over to see what he had and if he needed help dragging it to the scales, he reaches in with one hand and throws it on the scales. Guy was just as happy as can be too. that deer musta lost her spots the night before

he was from south of I-10:rotfl:

Montauk17 08-27-2011 04:24 PM

LOL....throw the whole thing on the pit. Bet it was real tender. :D

huntin fool 08-27-2011 04:30 PM

For once in my life, im pumped for Deer season.

huntin fool 08-27-2011 05:54 PM

So In conclusion, don't get the .444, get the 45-70. Got it.

evidrine 08-27-2011 06:52 PM

I shoot the CVA .45-70. Its a beast. Open sights is all you need around here unless your hunting shooting lanes or pipelines. The Hornady Leverlution rounds are great. I find the the CVA is whole lot easier on your shoulder than the H&R. It is a really great ,shooting rifle, plus it is cheaper than the others. Came with the "Claw" sling and adjustable fiber optic sights.

flounder_smacker 08-27-2011 07:35 PM

i have the cva .444 with nikon prostaff 3x9x40 bdc. good shooting gun. cva comes with a good recoil pad better than the hr i find. i went with the .444 because it has better ballistics than 45-70. both are good calipers but the cva fits and looks better than the hr.

Slidellkid 08-27-2011 10:58 PM

I have a .444. I have shot a 45-70 before and I think the .444 has less recoil. The 444 shoot a 265 grain bullet and the 45-70 well over 300 grains. More grains equals more recoil, all things being equal. Regardless, you are welcome to shoot mine before you purchase if you like. I live in Deridder. I shoot the Hornady Revolutions and my rifle is amazingly accurate. I can easily hit an eight inch plate at 200 yards (I aim just at the top of the plate). Regarding scopes, you may not like the Nikons. I don't care for them. They are bright but they have a relatively short field of view and tend to look like you are looking through a tube. I recently bought a Redfield Revolution and compared it to my Leupold right at dusk. I was very suprised - I hate to admit it but the Refield was brighter. They are very fine scopes for the money (and are actually made at the Leupold plant in Oregon). Good luck and if you want to shoot my .444 you are more than welcome to take it to a range and have at it.

LaAngler 08-28-2011 12:05 AM

I've shot both 45-70 and .444 handi rifles with lever evolution, the 45-70 had more recoil.
My .444 grouped about 1.5" using truck as a rest, recoil not bad i'd say

BIGJ 08-28-2011 11:47 AM

I have a 444 with a 3x9x40 nikon prostaff and love it. It is very accurate with lots of knockdown. You'll like it

Feesherman 08-30-2011 06:41 AM

I am holding out for the .35 wheelen. Until it becomes legal, I am just gonna keep shootin em with my CVA smoke pole.

saute86 08-30-2011 07:18 PM

I have the optima elite 45/70. I love it looks and feels like a thomson for half the price. It shoots 1in groupings at a 100yrds. No recoil like a H&R has. I shot a box of shells one shot after another no problem. I shot my friends H&R once and wouldnt do it again its a mule compaired to the optima.

The 35 win is proven to be the best brush gun. I read an article yrs back that did a study shooting targets with 2 sets of wooden dowels placed in front of a target. The 35 beat all other calibers. Slow heavy bullet less deflection when it hits something.
