Boat recommendation

Hey all. I currently have a bass boat and am thinking about transitioning to a bay boat. I really like the 19&22 foot Makos but keep reading bad talk about Mako.

I would like something in the 19-22 foot range. I fish big lake often and vermilion bay occasionally. I also will do some fresh water.

I would like to buy something used for less than 20K. Please post your recommendation.

Thanks

Thanks,
Hydro

I sold my 22' Pathfinder earlier this year and would recommend that hull, got burnt out on the potlickers and bought something to get away from everyone else...

Stand by, there will be lots of suggestions for you coming up shortly ...

Do you know what a potlicker is ???

jpeff31787 08-30-2011 07:49 PM

First off I recommend at least a 21' boat. If you get a 19 you'll be looking to buy again the next year, trust me. Especially in vbay, the bay can be extremely rough and the gulf can be smooth in the same day. I have a 19' nautic star and it seems to fall right between the swells every time. With your price range I'd also say the pathfinder, blazer bays, kenners, Mako (i think they are nice) and frontiers would be a good place to start looking. These are some of the makes that you can find used closest to your price range without giving up much quality/appearances or at least that's what I think. I'm waiting on a good deal for a triton, blackjack, nautic star, blazer or even those fusion pathfinders. Things are sweeeeet

BIGJ 08-30-2011 07:54 PM

Blazer Bay

Montauk17 08-30-2011 08:04 PM

Everyone will have a opinion on what brand is best. Buy the biggest boat you can afford and try before your buy,in rough water if possible.

I'm shopping also, anyone have any opinions on Xpress boats?

Kenner18 08-30-2011 08:11 PM

Find an old Kenner 95-05 yrs.

bjhooper82 08-30-2011 08:24 PM

i agree with jpeff and montauk all the boats jpeff named are great boats and always buy the biggest you can afford and the biggest motor. i have an 18' nautic star and i love it but its not that good in rough water go with a 22' or even 24' if you can find one in your price range

ricky2110 08-30-2011 09:01 PM

i got a 2110 nautic star with an f150, love the layout, but the blazer bay 2020 rides better.

What about this one in the classifieds here?

Kenner18 08-31-2011 10:28 AM

Here is a few tips .
If the owner wont let you test run ....run away
Always do a compression check , bad compression ....run away
Ask plenty of questions about boat such as..use,maintenance,any problems (past,present)......owner dont give good answers...run away

Remember just cause it looks good dont mean it aint junk..Take your time and you will find your boat.

mako1 08-31-2011 11:26 AM

i have a mako. havent had any problems with it except the saltwater messing up the trolling motor plug in front. but just got better plug-in. found it used and got a good deal on it. just have to look around. plus i cant take it in fresh water where most of the big saltwater boats prolly wont be going bc i like to bass/crappie fish to. so great boat for me.

SGib 08-31-2011 11:47 AM

I have a Mako 241 and love it. Plenty of fishing space. Big front deck and lots of room to fish 4 ppl and not be in each others way at all. Only negative thing is it doesnt have a rod box. Would be nice to be able to leave the rods in it at the stall. Hope you can find a good deal. Found mine brand new for 27,000.

redtail28 08-31-2011 12:11 PM

My wife say's that bigger is better
and i know she talking about boats:spineyes:

does mako still make that boat? I remember seeing one in VBay one day, but I can't find them online and have never seen one for sale

SGib 08-31-2011 02:43 PM

I'm pretty sure they do not. Must have not sold a whole lot of that model. Good boat if you can find one.

I wish they'd start making them again. Makos have a good price tag on them, they aren't outrageously expensive

SGib 08-31-2011 05:05 PM

I Don't think I have seen another mako on biglake. May just be that I avoid the weekends.

jchief 08-31-2011 05:24 PM

I really like my Frontier. Very dry and comfortable ride.

Looking to down size, I have a 22ft with a 200 Suzuki 4-stroke and would like to get into a smaller rig, something like you have. We may be able to work a deal? e-mail sxsimon@bop.gov. Use this contact

Lots of makos on the lake. Mako bought the old Kenner hulls through Tracker Marine. So its a kenner hull with tracker marine accessories (which is the parts that break) The hull is great though.

I do love Bill Kenner's new line of boat, esp the Frontier. Seems to work well for everything.

"H" 09-01-2011 10:13 AM

I have owned 2 Mako 1901's in the past. I thought they were great boats and had no problems or issues with either one. Would buy another one in the future if the opertunity presents itself.

bjhooper82 09-01-2011 01:55 PM

hey afmarko99 let us know what you end up buying and post up some pics.. good luck with your search

SGib 09-01-2011 02:24 PM

Nice to hear of others. Not so much about the breaking. So far had real good luck outta mine. Hope you can find a good deal!

ryane7 09-01-2011 05:52 PM

Go check out my post from a few months ago. H22B-ss is a sweet hull, gives a good range from the Marsh to the gulf. Handled chop beyond my expectations. Although, if you don't do much marsh fishing/shallow water, I would go with a Blazer Bay or equivalant. 21' or better? Just my 2 cents

Agreed!!!! Always do a compression check !! I buried $5,000 buying from a family memeber. Wasn't his fault, the boat ran fine when I bought it!!!

The Mako 241 Inshore is the same boat as the Blazer Bay 2400.
