Fished braid and mono for years and liked both(usually Sufix) with good results, recently went lighter with Trilene 10 lb flurocarbon and really like it. If a fish farts within ten yards of my line I know about it. Super sensitive, but have had break offs inside of the net and had to re-tie. It did handle a 9 lb red at Big Lake without any problems.

LOL I was thinking the same thing. Poor ole Tim will never hear the end of that one. :rotfl: Goes to show you trout are not line shy cause he caught fish with it!

12ld seaguar flouro in the blue and yellow box, expensive but best flouro to fish with, I've used vicious and have had to cut off 20 yards every fishing trip it degrades fast and is stiff.

HUUHHH....

I dont see how people use braid for fishing plastics....No way...:shaking:

I use windtamer braid for my topwater rod but you dont get near the action that Mono provides working a soft plastic bait with jig head....

SaltERedneck 11-04-2011 08:25 AM

I dont use braid in salt water. I only tie uni to uni knots with fluoro in freshwater. Suffix mono works. I tie and re tie so much on baits that i dont wanna fool with leaders and such.

speck cc 11-04-2011 10:09 AM

i always use a light braid... never had a reason to switch, works just fine!

haha, was it really necessary to have a weight under the cork when the hook is weighted?

W, I agree and disagree with that statement. I like braid if I'm fishing slow with a light bait such as a fluke weightless or something of that nature. Reason being is because of the lack of stretch in braid I can barely twitch my bait without having to pull the bait. What I mean by pull is that if your fishing mono or flourocarbon, you have to pull the amount of stretch out the line before you move or feel your bait. But I do like the stretch whenever I'm fishing a little faster and that stretch will keep my bait twitching and sporadic. Now me too, I like fishing topwater with braid especially for bass, not so much trout.

By the way all the flourocarbon guys out there, you need to pick up some Pline Halo 15lb test. Awesome string. I pulled a 5.25lb bass out of a duck blind last weekend after wrapping me all up. String came out super frayed but never broke off. My cousin also pulled a nice 5lb fish through duckweed and over a huge limb then threw the bass in the boat with the same string. Real sensitive too. I tried the vicious and seager and I didn't care for either. They had a ton of stretch and sank way too fast.

Keywest18 11-04-2011 04:24 PM

spinning reels i use 10-12lb suffix and 20lb pp braid.baitcast i use 12-15 suffix/ big game....

"W" 11-04-2011 08:31 PM

mono gives a bait better action in open water....more natural look......Go in a swimming pool and throw a sand eel with 10bl mono vs 20lb power pro...get underwater and watch as some one works each bait..

Fish notice that also......Just saying.......

Keywest18 11-04-2011 09:21 PM

i agree the fish are picky when it comes to artificial and braid.but for bait fishing i havent noticed a different with mono vs braid

If I'm casting with artificials for reds or trout, use mono because it is easier to handle and is less expensive. If I'm fishing bottom, I use braded becaus it does not have any stretch and therefore more sensitive.

I switched to 15 lb. braid over 12 lb. mono on my Stratic spinning reels. It was cause the reel spools don't hold much. If I use a 1/4 oz. lead head with a soft plastic lure on mono, I don't have but a couple wraps of string left on the reel.
The braid is much thinner than the mono.
But I use mono on my bait casting reels.
I do find that you have to change out mono more often. Braid last longer, but more expensive, but mono feels betta.
