Best fishing setup for a 5yr old.

I'm looking at getting my 5yr old son a new rod and reel for Christmas. We just bought him a 2 piece spiderman rod and reel. After he caught a big red in big lake I realized it wasn't tough enough to handle saltwater fishing. I was thinking of a under cast. I'm sure with a little practice he could cast it with no problem. I'm sure somebody on here has ran into the same problem and can share some light on this.

Um No. Lol. Something a little less expensive in case it goes swimming besides the # of backlashes.

Go look at the shimano sienna reel and a shimano rod! Lotta bang for ur buck!
Some places have em set up in combos already

youu_whoo_whoo 11-20-2011 02:04 PM

Get him one of the zebco setups. He will never get a birdsnest with that reel, so now he can concentrate on hooking your line, the bank, things under water, pilings, bridges, etc... and maybe that big red or speck.

Im talking about the ones that are on top of the pole with the push button thing to cast. I wasnt coordinated enough at 5 to use the reels underneath the pole.

If you go with a spinning reel make sure you spool it up with some braid like fins windtamer. Mono on a spinner+kids= nasty line twist mess!

Yeah a Zebco 733 on a Ugly Stick. My 11 yr old "Tangles" next set up. He isn't any better and not getting tangled up, but I quit untangling for him so he is figuring out part of it. I told him all that tangling up is gonna mess up his fishing not mine.

zebco 33 combo, i had one when i was a kid and it lasted like 7 years and went "swimming" alot, not to mention all the times i dropped it in the sand lol.

Tightline11 11-20-2011 06:03 PM

Zebco 33 matched with an ugly stick can't go wrong for a kid and can take alot of abuse

mcjaredsandwich 11-20-2011 06:41 PM

I had a zebco 33 until I became interested with my dads baitcaster at about 9 years old...backlashed it the yard and got disciplined for that. Got a cheapo baitcaster that christmas. Nothing wrong with a zebco. He will have fun learning to fish with it. Only downside is slow retrieve.

Moron I said he already has a spiderman pole. He can cast that thing a mile. It just don't hold up to reds and decent sized specs.

wow, thats exactly what happened to me. i would always wait till my dad went to work and try to cast them.boy would i backlash them good! he got tired of that quick so he bought me one for my birthday and told me if i touched his again he was gonna backlash mine and i'd be on my own

weedeater 11-20-2011 08:54 PM

1fastmerc 11-20-2011 08:57 PM

Merc, they make some reels that are about 5:1 so they ain't real slow.

My bad. Didn't catch that in the op. That reel couldn't handle a red. But it could prob stand up to specks

I would think that they make that style reel in a more heavy duty model though.

jchief 11-20-2011 09:29 PM

I think there are some Diawas and I have some Johnson's that I use sacalait fishing. Not sure about others.

Looks like the Zebco 888 is pretty heavy duty, anyone use these

rdenison 11-20-2011 09:32 PM

Mine uses the sponge bob set up, it holds up quit well in salt water and it's easy to throw. Trust me I have been through at least 10 other models and this one has been the best, last at least 20 trips and they are cheap!

mriguy 11-20-2011 09:37 PM

My son has a Zebco saltfisher 733, the combo came with 20# mono, 6'6". It can definately handle good size reds.

jonathonv 11-21-2011 08:05 AM

Academy has an Ugly Stick Jr, its sort of between the spider man type pole and a full size pole. About 4' long and a push button Zebco type rod-n-reel combo. My 6 yr old can wield a full size rod but prefers using the shorter one. I spooled it up with 10lb mono and it has held up well so far.

Garfish 11-21-2011 02:52 PM

I used Zebco 33's for a long time in my youth and they handled most everything I caugh from brim to reds.
I bought a 3 Zebco 33 combo setups for my 5 and 7 yr old nephews and the pink lady's version for my 6 yr old daughter for Xmas gifts this year. They can all cast those push button reels purty good. They were reeling in the rat reds, puppy drum, trout, channel mullet/whiting, and croakers like crazy in the surf during the summer and wore out the Zebco 2o2's. The salt and sand kinda helped out too. The 33 setups look more sturdy and the 5 1/2 foot rods are plenty to handle the pond brim and catfish or the surf fishing they'll be doing.
