Finally got my first!

Got my first deer yesterday over in Boyce, LA. After sitting on a ladder stand til 9:30, I got down to meet my cousin at the truck for 10. Well since my cousin brought me out there in the dark, I wasnt too sure on how to get back. I took off walking in what I thought was the right direction (actually complete opposite) I just kind of walked up on him at about 50 yards and then dropped to my knee. He looked and never saw me then went back to eating. Took a few steps into a clearing and stopped to take a bite of grass. And thats when I dropped the hamma! Killed him from a kneeling position right through the shoulder. He got about 10 yards and died in a creek bed.
12 point, 175 pounds. Overall a good deer and a good story for my first deer! Wanted to do a shoulder mount but not a good time to spend the bones during christmas. Will be doing a skull mount. |

Thanks guys, it really was just a stroke of luck. How he didnt see me coming before I saw him I have no idea. I think he was a little wore out from running doe around. I had seen him a time or 2 (if it was the same one)and he was running around. Good thing I was lost lol!

I have been hunting Public Land since about the time you were born..... and my best is a 10 pt.
My Buck was killed in a similar situation. Earlier in the morning, I had seen a Buck stop and he stayed in one spot for a couple of minutes. I could not tell what the buck was doing. Late that morning I went over to look to see what he may have been looking at. There was not much brush in the area, and after several minutes walking around and not seeing anything I was about to leave. Like any hunter, I always pause to look around..... just in case something is moving. There was a very big tree about 25 yard away, and I caught quick glimps of a buck walking in my direction on the other side of the tree. My rifle was shoulded in .1 seconds when the buck was behind the tree.....and I was ready. I waited,,,,,waited,,,,,waited...... but no deer. It felt like forever....and I was wondering if the buck had seen me [I was standing out in the open only ~35 yards away from him.]? Would I see a "flag" running off in the woods? Then finally [maybe 20 seconds later] he steps out and I put a .243 cal cor-lock between his front shoulders and he drops. |
My heart is pumping hard after reading that......thanks Gerald!
|
Good read Gerald!
