Rainbow trout rodeo
BREC sponsored a free fishing rodeo this morning at Greenwood park in baker La. My son won a nice shakespear spinning combo and a $20 d i c k s sporting goods certificate for biggest trout. we also won a plaque and trophy for 2nd place in most fish.
Another rodeo tomorrow afternoon to see if we can bring home some more swag.:grinpimp: |

Congrats on tournament win.
I travel to BR for work and would like to give Rainbow trout fishing a try but don't have a clue how to fish them. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |
light tackle. 6 - 8 lb line number 8 hook and corn on bottom or small spinners.
I ordered some salmon eggs from yankee land to fish with .Got them today so i'll try them tomorrow. |
I use the smallest Rapala crankbaits and inline spinners.
Rapala countdown minnows CD5 due to CD 7 to big. I like Rapala due to their lures have weight to get the lure out there. Now they love the small rebel minnows over rapala's in Arkansas shad. Just the rebel lighter and I do some modifications to get it to work right without losing tight wiggle. Sometimes the stocking of the trout get the bass going in the pond. Here is a pic of a bass and trout I caught a few years ago in the North Sherwood Brec pond. http://i42.tinypic.com/yfj1f.jpg |
Son caught a nice bass the other day while we were catching trout.
The other thing i have noticed, one of the big ponds they stocked has some real big sac a lait in it. when they stock the trout the sac a lait shut down. This happened 2 years ago and this year within 3 days of the trout being stocked. |
It stirs up bass
Scaliat seem to shut down Only time I caught scaliat is when it was cold rainy Jan day. The trout shut down. Did small flying bugs look like Mosquitos but wasn't. Put a small mosquito lure on betts plug used for throwing flyfishing lures. I slammed the scaliat for two hours out same spot. That only time I caught scaliat in a brec pond after they stocked trout. |
Have yall had any luck Fly fishing the Rainbows?
|
Shhhhhh! #10 or #12 black wooly bugger on sink tippet or same size bead eye in black or brown . when they were first stocked it was nothing to C&R 50 in just a short while at forrest park. The park in zachary is producing on the same stuff.
the fish i have been cleaning from zachary are full of brown snails just a bit bigger than a BB |
Thanks Man......Where are the lakes.....Im from Lafayette and I love to fly fish. Any info would be appretiated.....also can you fly cast from the bank?????
|
Congrats Bob.
We used to catch some nice sacs in Greenwood Park. Probly try the trout in Katy one day in the next couple weeks. TPW stocks em every 3 weeks or so in several ponds in the Houston area. |
Congrats Bob! You put those trout in the smoker?
|
the ponds that are stocked are greenwood park in baker .
Forrest park on harrels ferry rd. B.R. the pond at the burbank soccer complex B.R zachary community park in zachary. Fly fishing is probably best at zachary and forrest park. Forrest is probably getting close to being fished out. (very small pond). The soccer complex and green wood are larger ponds / lakes and it seems the trout have gone to the middle and can't be reached from the bank. you can put a yak / canoe / bateau w/ trolling motor only in Greenwood park lake. the rest are bank fishing only. the parks open at sunrise and close at dark. |

just wondering if could still catch some trout over at the forest location with some light spinning tackle ? The girlfriend's family is from close by and would impress them with some rainbow trout
|
went by there yesterday and there was one guy using 4 lb like , a#12 treble and berkley trout paste and catching a few. But it's close to being fished out. no one else was getting a bite.

thanks for the info i've never fished that way since i'm in lafayette but i'd like to take my 10 ft with trolling motor over to the park by the zoo that pond/lake looks really nice from the arial view

Greenwood Pond was one of the first ponds they ever put trout in next to North Sherwood. They typically put the larger trout in Greenwood due to its a more challenging pond and larger area. There is a tackle store down Hwy 19 by Popeye's chicken in Baker almost going outside of town on the right. I think use to be called Louie's looks like rundown convience store put still has tackle in it shiners, crickets, fishing tackle. Guy in there use to tell me they would catch some nice trout all the way in June and July. I saw pictures and size was better than North Sherwood.
For some reason Greenwood pond has held trout year round its just tuff place to fish. Smaller ponds get fished out quicker or trout die due these ponds heat up quickly. Still love it after Catch Cormier with Red Stick Fly Club declaired there was no more big fish in the North Sherwood Pond I caught this bass. Same day caught some trout even though the ministers of misinformation declaired that fish are all gone. Guess they didn't tell this bass he shouldn't have been in the pond. http://i40.tinypic.com/9vim9s.jpg Ponds are easy to fish and then once they get pressured the fish scatter and are alot harder to fish. Remember match bait to the pond. Again I don't know how to fish the ponds and never caught any fish out of them. Heee Hee Hee Maybe you should ask the members of the Red Stick Fly Club due to they are the experts on fishing the Brec Ponds. Hee Hee Hee |
No real nice city ponds in lafayette or there is a nice one with concrete edges off camelia blvd real nice for fish but they don't put fish in it or keep up with stocking it i'm a have to hit the neighborhood prvt ponds hehehe

Brec Baton Rouge Parks and Recreation use to do a fair job stocking the ponds.
It just wasn't a priority, but they did stock them. I saw some trucks stock ponds. In late 1980's and early 1990s they worked with DWLF to stock North Sherwood Pond with Rainbow trout. Back then you had to go to the Kmart on Florida Blvd near the pond to buy a trout stamp which wasn't that much to help support stocking. At that time DWLF was looking into stocking more park and recreation ponds throughout the state. If they would have followed through I think they would have found out people would have probably bought a trout stamp to support it if it was affordable. I heard the program died due to DWLF budget was tight, mixture of politics, and Brec had limited funds on their side for that program. All of a sudden around 2006-2007 Brec brought life back in stocking the ponds and been a real hit. They even built some new ponds, so I think Brec done a bang up job really supporting urban fishing. Some of these ponds especially North Sherwood and Greenwood are mature ponds and have some mature bass in them. This year they are working on North Sherwood that why they didn't stock it with trout. |
There was actually a corporate donation that paid for the trout this year.
i was told who it was but since i'm not sure i remember i will find out b4 mentioning the name. |
