Discouraged angler

Made a trip with three friends today to BL. I have been keeping up with all of you guys great reports and trying to learn as much as possible. As I put the boat in the water this morning at 6:10 I was confident that we would be able to boat a good mess of trout. I have been paying attention to the baits from the reports, the tides, and as much about locations as I could. I started at the old jetties then hit the west cove then made the long trip up to Turner's Bay and fished around the Bay as well as the island in the middle.

Ended the day with a BIG FAT GOOSE EGG! After putting this much preperation and effort into a fishing trip a day like this is very dicouraging.

The water was beautiful everywhere except for the South East side of the Lake, Not sure what I am doing wrong in the lake but a day like this makes me look forward to offshore fishing season that much more.

Glad everyone else on here had a good day on the water. I know a bad day fishing is better than a good day in the office, and I am grateful that I was able to experience the outdoors with good friends today.

As always thanks for all the reports and advice. Wish I had a box shot to show but not today.

Were you the one at the landing at Hebert this afternoon in a patbfinder????

#1 your 1st mistake was heading south.....fish are north....

2nd was you using 1/8oz jig heads and what color?

3rd you missed the bite when you went to the old jetties

"H" 12-28-2011 07:34 PM

Don't feel bad....that lake has whipped me more times than I would like to admit.

No I was in a Mako with a red T-top

#1: Yes I agree. We started South Because we stayed at a buddies camp in Pecan Island.

#2: 1/4 oz jig heads with Skull draggers, Jr. Jerks, and many other combos with different colors. Jig heads I use lead no colors

#3: I read that the tide would be falling from 10 am the rest of the afternoon. We were in Turner's Bay by 10.

#2 1/8oz jig head is the trick this time of year.

#3 Bob and I got in Turners about 0945h this morning and got in on the tail end of the bite. It was like a light switch was flipped at 1030h. We fished until 1430h and only picked up 2~3 more. We even fished by "W" for about an hour and still did no good.

"W" 12-28-2011 08:08 PM

you have to use 1/8 oz jig heads........and True 1/8oz... True means the hook and jig head weight 1/8oz total..(yes there is a big difference) lot of jig head makers add 1/8oz lead to the hook and don't include the hook weight............ This much makes or breaks Trust me

Too bad I had to work today or I would have showed yall how it's done. Nice catch fellas

LPfishnTIM 12-28-2011 11:29 PM

thats fishing, I'd hire a guide and ask questions while fishing, if you plan on fishing BL frequently it will be worth the money.

which brand is a "TRUE" 1/8 oz jighead.... better yet what brand do you use. I have never weighed jig heads and had no reason to do so. I fish with Yellowmouth and that only.

Ray 12-29-2011 09:07 AM

OB from the Tackle Box has a post on here with true weights and brands.

I use these for my 1/8oz...I get the unpainted and buy 100 at a time....
http://lurepartsonline.com/s.nl/it.A/id.11196/.f

I use the yellow mouth 1/4oz (The 1/4oz is a true weight on this size)

All great info thanks guys. I do believe a guide is the quickest way to learn new water

Slidellkid 12-29-2011 11:29 AM

W, that is a damn good tip from someone that smokes the trout on a regular basis. Good on you for passing that along!

Dan

Slidellkid 12-29-2011 11:31 AM

W, how fast do you need to be working the bait this time of year? Do you let it hit bottom before starting the retrieve of keep it moving as soon as it hits?

when they are feeding it really dont matter but when the water is real cold and the fish are picky.... you will have to slow it down.... most of the time you will barley feel the bite.....This is where lots of people miss fish

getonfish 12-29-2011 12:51 PM

From a new angler trying to learn. Why is 1/8 better than 1/4 during this time of year?

bait falls slower. I caught a couple on a 1/16 head yesterday too

YellowMouth7 12-29-2011 01:21 PM

cold water = lighter and slower presentaions.....a good sensative rod and 100% floro will help you to catch many more fish this time of year.

when you think you are fishing slow......slow down

You can come with me if you're giving away baits..

Hey Trevor, what brand floro you use?

buoy37 12-29-2011 02:28 PM

Don't get discouraged Mako19. I don't know your history with BL, but it takes years of fishing a body of water to learn its patterns. Keep at it and it will all come together.

Just imagine the hell I am gonna catch when I fish BL. I have only fished BL with a guide a couple of times and worst of all, my boat has TX tags.

YellowMouth7 12-29-2011 03:06 PM

Dad I will bring you on the next one.....Mike, My dad said to stop talking to him...BlackMamba, Bassassasin turned me on to Seagar Invisex 100% floro. I put half a spool of triline big game 12lb mono for backing then tie a uni to uni for my conecting knot to 15lb Floro.

if thats the seagar in the blue and yellow box, that is some awesome clear line that works great, I use it too for bass and trout fishing. doesn't kink and brake as much as cheaper flourocarbon lines.

getonfish 12-29-2011 03:50 PM

AAAHHHHH!!!! so it is the TX tags on my boat keeping the fish away. I have not read about that on the site. I learn sumpin new erreeday. :D

Duct Tape can fix that.

getonfish 12-29-2011 03:55 PM

grea stuff! i love it. If you do it right you can get a good 2 reels spooled out of one of the reg size spools for round $20

fishshark 12-29-2011 05:09 PM

Yellow mouth 7 is an a hole to his old lovable dad.

Does it twist like mono does by the bait when using a sand eel type bait?

BassAssasin 12-29-2011 08:09 PM

Haven't noticed it, but I also haven't trout fished with it much. I bass fish 90% of the time

I hear ya....how long does it last if you fish a few times a month?

BassAssasin 12-29-2011 10:15 PM

I've still got some on from last April that I'm still using and haven't had any issues.

BassAssasin 12-29-2011 10:16 PM

Just always check for Knicks and rough spots
